Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Skull Ornamental Print

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Skull Cardboard Safari

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

  • PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
  • PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

My weirdest Halloween costume was the year I went to work as a dead person. What’s more appropriate for El Dia de los Muertos, right? I had a body bag (unused, needless to say) and climbed into it, zipped it most of the way up, and wandered around the office in it. (I worked for a gaming company, so this wasn’t as outre as you might imagine.) It was all fun and games until a co-worker zipped it up all the way. Har de har.

She dressed up as Dumbo and loved the outfit so much she would run around our apartment complex wearing it (with us, of course). My husband loved to chase her and her tiny little Dumbo tail would waggle as she ran. Hee hee! Cutest thing evah!

My favorite was when my best friend and I dressed as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen in 3rd grade. All we did was wear our hair in pig tails, draw freckles on (they don’t have freckles), and make t-shirts with puff paint that had the name of which sister we were. I mean the shirts were classic with the puff paint, but it was pretty lame. Since it was pre-bage lady image there wasn’t anything that made them definable. Really, we just matched. Oh well, we still love to laugh about it!

The most-memorable costumes: When I was in 2nd Grade, three boys went as babies. Their mom’s made them huge diapers, and they carried bottles and huge pacifiers. It was hilarious. The other was in middle school–my friend and I dressed up as old men and played a french horn duet at a talent show. How ridiculous!

My sister gets the prize for weirdest Halloween costume in my family. When she was 3 she desperately wanted to be the mailman. My dad (an amazing DIY’er!) made her a cardboard mailtruck that attached to her body with seatbelt suspenders. Then he talked our real mailman into lending us one of his uniform shirts for her to wear.

my weirdest halloween costume had to be when we had NO extra money for costumes one year, so my mom took three black pairs of tights (maybe they were nylons, I don’t remember anymore), a giant black sweatshirt my dad had, and transformed me into a giant black spider. She even drew spiders’ webs all over my hands and face. Actually, it was pretty cool, considering :O) But I was used to being dressed up as a princess most years, so this was totally out of the ordinary.

best costume ever? Even though no one knew who I was, I dressed up as the Ranch Tooth from those Wendy’s (I think?) commercials, and I loved it. I thought the commercials were so hilarious, and when the ONE PERSON recognized me as the Ranch Tooth screamed out “Ah! Ranch Tooth!” in delight, it was all worth it.

My most memorable costume of all time was when my cousin and I dressed up as siamese twins. We were around 10 years old and bought a huge jumper thing from the thrift store. My hair is brown and hers is blonde so we sprayed our hair pink with that colored hairspray. Here in Colorado, Halloweens are almost always really cold so this costume was ideal becuase of the body heat and we were able to bundle up underneath the jumper. Sorry, I don’t have a picture.

Skull me! My husband and I are all about the pun costumes. Last year, he was a “cereal” killer (little boxes of cereal on him with plastic knives sticking out), and I dressed as a spelling bee (bee costume with words glued everyone) to school. I reach 8th grade English, so the students loved it!

My weirdest and most uncomfortable Halloween costume was definitely not my idea. My mom dressed me up as a gift box when i was really young. She put me in a large gift-wrapped box with holes for my arms and legs and head and then stuck a huge ribbon on my head. It was absolutely miserable because when i got tired i couldn’t sit down or be carried because the box was a lot bigger than i was and was really unwieldy. I remember crying hysterically and begging to go home rather than continue trick or treating.

The best Halloween costume I ever had was homemade by my very talented mother … A satin dress made in the exact fashion of Aurora’s Sleeping Beauty ball gown. She used the perfect shades of pink, and even created a beautiful sequined crown to go with it! My little sister was Cinderella that year — I just know all the other little girls in the neighborhood were jealous!
