Fab Freebie: Furry First Aid

I bet it hasn’t taken long for you guys to figure out that we’re a tad infatuated with our dog, Hamburger.  Well, at least I know Danielle from FirstAidLive.com picked up on it.  She kindly sent us one of their Pet First Aid Kits, a tidy little bag with all the first aid goodies we might need if Burger ever gets cut, stung, or otherwise ends up in harm’s way.  Speaking of which, here he is risking a tongue-in-the-zipper injury.

Firstaidlivepetcheckinout

And since we know we’re not the only ones playing protective parent to a furry family member, we asked Danielle to share the love. And we’re happy to announce that FirstAidLive.com has agreed to hook up one lucky reader with their very own Pet First Aid Kit. For your chance to win, just comment on this post with the name of your pet and, for fun, one of their weird habits.  For example:  “Hamburger: runs laps around our bed before bedtime.” Enter by Friday (11/21) at Midnight EST and we’ll choose one random winner to receive the kit by mail.  And sorry, but you’ve gotta live in the US for this one.

The kit nicely organizes 58 pieces into one convenient place (goodbye messy medicine cabinet) AND, better yet, can even stand in for a human first aid kit in a pinch.  That’s assuming Burger doesn’t mind sharing his gauze and antiseptic towlettes with his somewhat-accident-prone father (who, btw, nearly cracked his head open during our magazine shoot two weeks ago).

Firstaidlivepetlookawayburg

You can learn more about the Pet First Aid Kit and other First Aid supplies here.  And we can’t wait to hear about all of your wacky dogs and cats.

Sage, our blonde lab rescue, likes to greet everyone who comes to our door by putting their arm in her mouth.

Since she can’t shake your hand until you ask her to (and then she’ll offer her paw) she’ll gladly grab your arm in her mouth (lightly) and give her hello.

P.S. When you ask for people to talk about their animals, it’s a sure bet you’ll get lots of responses!

Our dog, Barley, actually chases his tail. A lot.

He’ll also sit on your lap anytime you sit down on the floor. Which is super-uncomfortable since he’s a 75-lb mastiff/bully mix. I suspect he thinks he’s Burger’s size.

likes to lay down spread out on his belly with his hind legs frog style, also quite adorable!

Dakota – she loves ducks, and can even tell the difference between a goose and a duck (perhaps normal for a trained hunting dog, but that would not be this dog)

Sadie & Gunnar, our 2 Italian Greyhounds (and friends of Sarge the Rottie, about 7 posts up!) – Sadie tries to walk on her 2 front legs if we put clothes on her. I think she thinks the clothes will fall off of her if she does that. It’s quite comical. Gunnar is my shadow and must be where I am constantly. He’ll even take a bite of his food and carry it to the room I’m in to chew.

When my whippet mix, Abby, needs something (a treat, to be let outside, a good belly rub), she’ll sit by me, stare intently at me, and snort LOUDLY to get my attention. If I’m deeply involved with an activity and don’t notice right away, she will continue to snort until I turn my attention to her and determine what she’s ‘asking’ for!

Yay, this would be so perfect! Zoe, our rescue mutt, keeps getting small injuries at the dog park. We also have two rescue cats and now that it’s getting colder, one of them, our black cat, Escher, has taken to staying warm by snuggling around the top of my husband’s head. Now every morning I get to wake up and see an Escher hat around my husbands head!!

I have 2 wonderful black labs. Sox is 6 years old, and Buddy just turned one last Saturday.

Sox is a cuddler, he thinks he’s a person and will sit on the couch next to you like one. He loves watching TV and will sit at the table with us if we let him (we don’t)

Buddy is rambuctious to say the least. He is a kisser who can extend his neck an additional 6 inches just to make sure he can kiss you while you’re trying to hold him at bay.

How fun! One of my cats, Vinnie (2yrs), only has one eye and her other eye only has 10% vision. Her favorite game? A mean game of fetch. That’s right, if you throw a toy mouse across the room Vinnie will run and grab it and return it gently at your feet – over and over again. I’ve never met such a hilariously happy cat! Her blindness means nothing to her! :)

We have Oscar (6 yrs, dachshund), Marley (3 yrs old, great pyrenees), and Smokey (foster-1 yr, lab mix). Oscar loves to lounge in a donut shape, and when he’s really settled in he doesn’t move. So if we move around, there’s this little circle of hair that doesn’t move anything but its eyes. Marley patrols the yard and has run 2 paths through the back lawn. Smokey still has those cute, clumsy puppy movements. He will also curl up in a donut in the back yard, but with his head up so he can keep an eye on things, and he looks just like he’s sitting on a nest. Love my fur babies!

Thanks for this chance to win the puppy first aid kit!

We have the always amusing HuskyMutt Sadie. We adopted her from a friend of ours who rescued her from an unloving home and she’s about a year and half old. We live in an apartment building with thin walls and our neighbors have a little pit bull puppy that likes to run up and down the hallway in their apartment. Since our halls share a common wall, Sadie the HuskyMutt likes to CHASE our neighbor’s dog down the hallway through the wall. BUT, she doesn’t just run down the hall – she runs and the LEAPS down the hallway. It’s hilarious.

Your dog is such a cutie. One thing about my dog Oscar(min pin) is the fact that he LOVES to cuddle up in my clothing. If I dare leave any article of clothing within his reach, he finds a way to drag it to his bed and cuddle his face in it..this includes socks and hair accesories!

I have two little cuties – Shula the Westie and Stella the Yorkie/Dachshund mix. They have more quirky habits than I could list, but here are two special ones: Shula loves to climb into refrigerators whenever she has the chance (http://tinyurl.com/6z2ape) and Stella has a mean habit of chasing her own tail!

My family just got a 2 year old black lab mix named Lucas from the SPCA! He moves furniture around for us! Seriously, instead of using his paw to scratch he runs laps around the arm chair in the living room pushing it around while he tries to cure the itchy blues! We love him already!

Marley, our dog, loves to move things from the kitchen. he delicately lifts bags of bread, cookies, chips, whatever, from the counter and places them around the house. He never eats the food, just moves it. As if he’s concerned that we’ll crave a midnight snack so he left a bag of cereal in our bed.

My 8 month old rescue dog, Juno, loves to lick the water out of the little space between the shower door and the tub. Then when you get out of the shower, she wants to lick you dry, too! Needless to say, she’s a true water dog.

Jake is our two-year old lab mix (terrier? pit bull? boxer?) and he’s quite the social little guy. Loves guests, kids, old folks, you name it. His weirdest habit is that he’ll lay down and just lick the bejeesus out of our oriental rug in the living room (maybe b/c it’s made from animal hair? Tastes yummy?). I mean, this guy GOES TO TOWN and it’ll just be on one spot at a time.

His most endearing habit is when we get out his leash for a walk and ask “Whose leash is this?” he moans intermittently until we get outside. It’s as though he loves walks so much he’s consumed by the idea of actually going outside.

Our cat, Oliver, loves to sit on the edge of the tub while we shower and then get in after you turn the water off to slip-n-slide around. He’s nuts. He also loves to play chase w/ me (like a dog), it’s more like a combination of hide and seek and chase, so funny!

My two dogs, Jazz and Disco would be much safer in our house with one of these around!

A weird habit: Jazz MUST sleep under the covers of my bed at night. He will not go to sleep unless I lift the covers for him to get in and snuggle. He will pace all night long on my head until I do. Ask me how I know this…

I have two Boston Terriers: Jax and Jewels. Jax is obsessed with tennis balls. He pick one out each day and go nuts only playing with that particular ball. He’s crazy. Jewels has a serious nesting issue and she’ll fluff blankets for 10-15 minutes before she even lays down.

We have two cats: Simon, an orange tabby, and Riley, a Siamese mix. Simon loves to sleep on my head at night, and Riley must sleep on my husband’s legs. Simon loves to get in the shower after us, and lay on the wet floor, and if Riley is sitting somewhere Simon wants to be, he just sits on top of him. They are hilarious :)

My cat Jaq has recently discovered paper towels and toilet paper. The last 3 days, I have come home from work to find one of the above scattered ALL over my apartment. After two days and a vacuum barricade, I locked up the paper towels, only to come home today to TOILET paper! I don’t know what I’m going to do with him.

We have 3 animals (1 mutt doggie from SPCA, 1 older kittie from local cat rescue group, and 1 youngish Maine Coon). We can’t leave a drink with a straw around unattended because Delaney, the Maine Coon, will pull the straw out of the drink and carry it around. She will even play fetch with a straw if you throw one for her. Bridget, our other cat, is obssessed with water that comes from the refrigator; we think it is because that water is filtered. If she finds a glass of water unattended, she will knock the glass over so she can get to the liquid. Luckily, Maddie, the dog, doesn’t really care about our beverages.

Our dog Molly has the same ears as Burger!

Molly will be 9 this year and due to her, ahem, adventurous spirit we have had a lot of stories to tell over the years. The wildest thing she has done started this summer. When we’re not at home she stays with my parents. Apparently she was bored at their place so she decided to let herself out and go for a walk. She opened their sliding door and walked 2 miles to our place. Once there she pranced around at the back door waiting for us to let her in, like “Hello, just thought I’d drop by.” Fortunately she was okay, but from now on we are keeping maps out of her sight!
