Christmas Gift Ideas For Everyone

As we continue to unpack, we thought we’d share this year’s virtual gift roundup (a la this one from last year). It’s a three-post-in-a-row thing (we couldn’t fit all the pics into one) so stay tuned for two more that’ll pop up today. First we hit up Crate & Barrel. Here’s what we found:

These cute wine glasses were on sale for $1.50, and two of them along with a bottle of inexpensive vino could make a nice little gift for someone that doesn’t drain the ol’ bank account:

Cb Vino 150 Sale

This pretty ceramic serving tray was on sale for $5.95, and could be filled with anything from cookies to candy (I’d do an assortment of fancy olives for my Italian antipasto loving mom). Who doesn’t need another serving platter? And one with the Crate & Barrel logo on the back always feels swanky (we’re betting the giftee would never guess it was under 6 bucks).

Cb 595 Sale Servingtray

I also couldn’t take my eyes off these gorgeous $3.95 votive glasses (a gift of three of ’em with simple white candles inside would be sweet). Full disclosure: if we weren’t packing and moving when we shot these pics, I totally would have snagged a few for myself.

Cb 395 Votive

These colorful bowls were $3.95 a pop, so a cute gift idea might be pairing a few of them with anything from a box of your giftee’s favorite cereal to a bag of mixed nuts or caramel corn.

Cb 395 Bowls

I have a certain bake-happy best friend who I think these $2.95 cupcake-shaped cookie cutters would be perfect for (along with anything from a baking cookbook to a bag of flour, sugar, and baking soda).

Cb Cupcakecutters295

We can’t forget gifts for our four-legged friends! And these designer dog toys would look pretty darn cute on the floor:

Cb Dog Toys 9.95

These feisty little pepper-riddled dishtowels (just $4.95) would be nice for anyone that you know who has red or green accents in their kitchen (John’s mom has a red kitchen at their beach house…).

Cb 495 Dishtowels

This is just a DIY idea that we noticed while trolling the store. How creative are these grasscloth wallpaper bookcovers? We’ve seen it done with white or tan craft paper, but the texture from the woven grasscloth is really cool.

Cb Grasscloth Diy

We can’t forget our recently acquired patterned napkins (which have a lot of the tones we’re loving for the new house color scheme worked in). They’re were still $2.95 each (marked down from $4.95) when we were there, so a gift of four of them tied with a turquoise ribbon would only run you $12.

Cb Napkins 295from495

Here’s another idea that we thought might inspire some good old fashioned DIY. A big box, bin, or jar of markers, crayons, pipe-cleaners, stickers, scissors, balloons, and other inexpensive (even dollar-store) items could make a really cool “I’m not bored anymore” present for the kid in your life.

Cb Diy Notbored Jar

These delicate $3.95 ceramic leaf ornaments were so pretty (for gifting to yourself while you’re shopping, or to someone else who might have a penchant for white ceramic things…).

Cb Ceramic Leaf 395

And speaking of white ceramic gorgeousities (not a word, but bear with me), this $6.95 pinecone ornament makes me want to make up words.

Cb Pinecone 695

And of course we have the obligatory photo of John and Clara in the Clara chair. Lookin’ good guys. Lookin’ good.

Cb Clara Chair

And so ends our trek through Crate & Barrel. We’ll be back in a bit to share what other budget friendly things we stalked at Pottery Barn and Urban Outfitters (we took too many pics to roll everything into one post this year). Until then, we’ll just be unpacking… again.

Update: You can check out all of our favorite holiday decor finds here – many of which are under $15!

Happy Holidays! Did you also get all your Christmas shopping, cards, and decorating accomplished in the middle of moving? Or are your family and friends going to forgive you this year? It’s a struggle for me even in the most uneventful of years.

Do you guys have to get special permission to take pictures in the stores? Just curious if you check with management first or endure crazy looks from the employees as you are snapping away. Ever been told that you couldn’t take photos (or been run out of a store because you were)? Merry Christmas…and Clara looks adorable.

      Hey Nik,

We just snap away! Of course people who work in each store see us shooting (so we assume they’d tell us if they had any policies against it) but so far nobody seems to mind! Of course we get odd looks (from shoppers and store employees alike) but we don’t really care about that. Looking like weirdos is totally worth showing you guys the good stuff that we find!

      Hey Albita,

After a long while (think a four mile hike) the ol’ back is a bit sore, but Clara’s only around 15lbs and it has great support (thick straps, a padded waste band) so it’s not bad at all for shopping sprees and stuff like that.

So this is totally unrelated to this post-although I LOVE all the gift ideas you posted (who doesn’t love C & B??). So I’ve noticed that you always have Clara in some sort of baby carrier when you’re out and about. Do you ever just take her in the carseat while you’re shopping? Just curious because I have a 5 month old and I have a few different types of baby carriers but I always just plop the carseat on the cart when I’m shopping. I feel like it’s too hard to get her in and out of the carseat every time I get out of the car. How do you guys feel about it? Also, I was reading your post on babycenter about starting solids with Clara (which we’ll be doing soon too!) and wondered if you were planning on making your own baby food? I have a couple of great book titles if you’re interested. I can’t wait to make baby food at home for my little one! Happy unpacking! :)

      Hey Katie,

Occasionally when Clara’s sleeping we’ll plop the car seat into the bottom of a shopping cart (we’re too scared to rest it on top) at places like Target or Kroger, but when we’re gift shopping those places don’t usually have a cart, and it’s just as easy to put her in a carrier as it is to break out her stroller (since it’s not a snap n go). Thankfully Clara’s a good little bugger, so she’s pretty much happy wherever she is, and she especially loves being worn since she feels warm and cozy in there. As for baby food, we have yet to buy a jar of baby food! We’re making everything Clara eats and most of it is what we’re having for dinner too! We’re doing the Baby Led Weaning method, so we highly recommend checking out that book and that whole approach to eating. Clara loves it!

Hey, this is unrelated, but we have a question about painting trim. We did the alcohol swab test and know the existing paint is latex. We have sanded so it’s not glossy and have done some test areas with the white paint. We have found that we can scrape the paint off with a fingernail in some areas even after drying overnight. Is this normal, or do you think we need to use a primer? We are painting in thin coats and not globbing it on. Any ideas? Thanks!

We’d definitely use primer if you can scrape it off overnight. Unless it’s not fully cured (if it’s super humid and moist in the air or something, it might take longer to be fingernail proof). Hope it helps!

I just HAD to comment on Clara cheesing for the camera. Too cute!! Also, I saw your comment about doing your own baby food. I did my own baby food as well, and http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com was the most amazing resource ever. They have recipes and ideas for homemade meals for babies and toddlers. I recommend you check it out, if you haven’t already! Best idea ever from there: Puree your food ahead of time and put it in some ice cube trays. When they’re frozen, pop them out and into a freezer bag. Then when it’s meal time, just thaw one out real quick. Each cube is a 1 oz. serving! It’s FULL of great info like that. Anyhoo, just thought I’d pass it along. Thanks for the post and the gift ideas! I always thought Crate and Barrel was a pretty expensive place.
