Young House Love » Decorating » A Fun Pink Polka Dot Rug For The Playroom

A Fun Pink Polka Dot Rug For The Playroom

You’ve heard of rolling out the red carpet, but what about the pink one? It’s Clara’s favorite color, and a nice warm tone (after filling most of the house with cool blues, greens, and grays, it’s nice to bring in some warm tones to balance things out). Plus the way the playful dots in the rug mix with the bold colors in Clara’s big girl bedding = almost more fun than my brain can handle. In person it’s even more happy! Seriously. Come over right now.

Clara Rug2

As for the price? Pretty darn hard to beat. We’ve had our eyes peeled for a while for something that would work with the blanket and general color scheme that we’re doing in there (red + pink with a lot of other pops like navy, yellow, teal, etc) but everywhere we looked (local decorating outlet, Overstock.com, Target, etc) was selling larger 7 x 9′ rugs for around $400-700, which was a little more than we wanted to spend. We even tried craigslist and ebay to no avail.

So we held out and kept looking and finally spotted this 7′ x 9′ guy for $236.95 (marked down from $629) on Joss & Main. It’s 100% wool, hand tufted, and the gradated color and fun imperfect dots that appear to be drawn on just felt so “Clara” to us. So we went for it. Not gonna lie, I was giddy when we clicked that order button. Especially since they were running a free shipping special (shipping fees can really add up on a big item like a rug).

Rug Price

Then after clicking that order button all giddiness subsided and we did that thing where we silently freak out about ordering a rug sight unseen. But since it worked out so well with our living room rug, we just tried to hope for the best.

Then it arrived and this happened:

Clara Rug Play1

Apparently rugs are fun even before they’re unrolled in the room.

Clara Rug Play2

Then when Clara was napping we finally got to see it in her big girl room/playroom. This space definitely started out super tame with very soft milky-tea colored walls…

Painting Room14

… and now it’s looking pretty crazy-pink thanks to the bedding and the rug…

Clara Rug1

… but we think once we add in the art, curtains, new light fixture and other items that will break the pink up and balance things out (there will definitely be a large object or two on the rug and we’re thinking about navy for some of the frames and maybe even the light fixture). Remember how the middle makes no sense? Well I’m crazy impatient. Haha. Can’t wait to see it after a few more steps!

In the meantime we’re soaking up some of the plushness and pattern (polka dots + a gradient!) that the rug adds. Most of our rugs are the same tone throughout, so we’ve never had one that gets darker as you step into the room.

Clara Rug5

The polka dots are definitely my favorite part though. No doubt.

Clara Rug6

Are you guys ordering any rugs online and holding your breath until they come? Are you working on a room that’s only about 20% done so you’re in that giddy-can’t-wait-for-this-to-come-together stage like us? It’s so funny how this room has been a pretty even combination of paint, furniture we already had, craigslist finds, and now there’s a new rug in the mix. Gotta love a smorgasbord…

Ordering rugs online is SOO hard! I’ve found if I snag a good enough deal online that I can unload them on craigslist, if it turns out I really just don’t like it…

I think this one is super cute for Clara’s space though, ya nailed it! I bet she is super pumped about her big girl room! Can’t wait to see it all put together. :)

I always want to order one on-line, especially when I see such good prices. I just get worried about the quality and not being able to feel it for myself. I also owrry about the no return policy at alot of places or the high cost of return. You will have to let us know how you like the quality of this rug as time goes on.

Will do! We have had our living room one over a year and its great! My tip is natural fibers (100% cotton, 100% wool) tend to hold up really well!

And John, I think you should paint all your book tour stops onto the map. Kinda like a visual of how far and how many places you guys go to show the love, eh???

Love how it’s different on each side!

I actually just unrolled a sight unseen rug in my living room this weekend and I gaze at it lovingly everytime I walk by. And I’ve already ordered another one online with a groupon I had…still holding my breath on that one.

The “OCD” side of me wishes the pinks matched a little more closely. It appears that the pink in the comforter is a little more “red/orange pink” and the rug is a little more “blue pink.” Then again, I’m one of those matchy-matchy types, and I definitely don’t have a blog or a best-selling book about my home improvement. So what do I know?! Ha! :)

The price for a 100% wool rug that size is awesome! I have been ogling a few Joss & Main rugs that I might have to pull the trigger on.

I saw a dresser very similar to Clara’s painted with metallic paint on pinterest and it is stunning! I would love a metallic paint tutorial. . . No pressure!

I don’t often comment on something I don’t like because it seems so negative on a blog full of positive. . . But here goes. I really love the rug but I would rotate it so that the daybed side of the room doesn’t look so busy?

      Otherwise. . . I’m nearly 28 and I’m envious of Clara’s lady-pink room!

I think that might be fun, it would also be like the dots would gradiate into the chevron on her bedding. Just a thought to spread out the pattern side of the room a bit. Hello, there! I loved this rug not only because of its size but also because of its color. I love pink and magenda color just like my two daughters. Unfortunatelly I cannot put any rug in my kids room because of their trundle bed. We can’t have everything, right?

It looks great! I especially love the polka dots! The big girl room is coming together so nicely. I can’t wait to see it evolve even more!!

Shopping online is totally my thing. I LOVE it. It is dangerous. :)

Could you describe how plush it is? I’ve been eyeing rugs on Joss & Main and on Zulily whenever they have sales, but am so nervous about buying a rug online! It would be for our son’s nursery so I want something he can crawl/sit/play on when that time comes (he’s currently still a 4 1/2 month lump, haha!)
Also, I saw a rug on Joss & Main a couple weeks ago that was called the “Clara” rug and made me think of you guys. it was a teal-ish (hard to tell on computer) rug that had die cut details at the corners, was so cute!

It’s as thick as any other 100% wool rug we’ve bought, so u assume its pretty standard. Maybe an inch and a half to two inches? Very nice and plush. Shedded a lot at first but after a few vacuumings it has calmed down :)

Loving your posts about this. It’s bringing me back to when we did our daughter’s big girl room when she was almost 3. We are now in the process of redoing her room since she is almost 11 and tired of all the pink :-(.
