Reader Redesign: Room To Grow
This kids’ room transformed in such a major way that we just had to share the almost unbelievable before & after pics. Here’s Kelly’s letter:
Here’s what our kids’ room looked like when we moved in: drab, dark and depressing. Needless to say, I wanted something more cheerful and happy for my children.
Now it’s FINISHED! I hung a bunch of paintings that I made when I was probably in 9th grade in an asymmetrical collage on the wall and added fun color in the rugs, window treatments and bedding. Pretty cute!! And of course just repainting those walls a muted blue tone made all the difference. Now on to another room… -Kelly
Isn’t that adorable? We’re sure Kelly’s kids are enamored with their newly swankified space. Fabulous job, Kelly… and good luck with that next room!

I love that the “before” pic has a child in it! I can see some stylist thinking “Hmmmm….fresh flowers? No! I’ve got it! Someone bring me a sleeping child!!”
And the results are indeed wonderful. I know my kids wish I had that kind of cool art hanging around since 9th grade!

I’ll say it looks adorable. i love the paintings look with that round rug. one would like you actually bought the rug and then created the paintings to go with it. great job. I would mind having some of the items in that room for myself.

I remember seeing that green rug with white swirls at Pottery Barn (on clearance!). She did a fabulous job–it looks so fun and fresh!!

I LOVE the sweet little white beds!! Any ideas on where they came from? They remind me of Pottery Barn, perhaps?
What a great job! I love it. I’m especially psyched because I just bought light blue paint and bright green fabric for curtains to go in my study… I can only hope it turns out as nicely as this room has!

Thanks for the input! I am pretty proud of the room – I was going for a totally whimsical, fun, colorful look. The kids do love it, although they now think it’s cool to sleep in the guest room…which I am also transforming (pictures to come, I’m sure)! I am working on finding the paint color name. Anything is better than the gold that was there, and this blue makes the white trim and furniture pop, and goes nicely with the floors. The carpets: round one is from Anthropologie, green swirly was on sale at Pottery Barn (found another wonderful clearance rug from PB for the guest room for something like $280 for a 9×12!!), and the little shag one is from JCPenney. The beds: one is from USA Baby from ages ago. I went to get another only to find they discontinued it, so I picked one up at JCPenney. Both are quite durable and stand up to lots of bed-to-bed jumping! The curtains are from Urban Outfitters. The room does make me smile since it’s so cheerful…espeically with all the snow, cold and grey outside!! Thanks to John and Sherry for all the inspiration!!!!
Oh my goodness??!!!! I want to move into this room, and I’m almost 40 years old. So refreshing and fun!
Adorable! It’s so upbeat and will age well with the kids too. Not too cutesy, but not too grown up either. Nice color scheme too. By the way, your house looks lovely. Great windows and floors!
