An Amazing Home Transformation House Tour

You’d be hardpressed to find a more dramatic home makeover than Christi & Barrett’s fantastic whole house overhaul. While we were poking around Kristen and Matt’s home in Charlotte, NC they mentioned that their friends just completed a major home renovation so we decided to house crash them as well. When in Rome- er, Charlotte…

Anyway, here’s the adorable couple (with their newborn baby!) on their front porch. Gotta love that these two strangers were totally cool with us snooping around with our camera in tow. It helps that Christi is a pretty enthusiastic Young House Love reader, so they were happy to let us snap some pics:

Img 3833

But their front porch didn’t always look like this, here’s the house before their major renovation:

Front Before

And after:

Img 3834

Don’t mind the fact that they still have some landscaping to do. I bet it’ll look even more amazing once it’s bordered with shrubs and flowers. Can’t wait for the after after pics! What an amazing change, right? And now we’ll take you inside their stylish home (where they added an entire second floor which houses a guest bedroom, their new nursery, and a third full bathroom). Take off your shoes and stay a while…

Here’s the entryway complete with an welcoming fireplace that greets you at the door. We loved their built-in bookcase with a green accent wall behind it. And we also adored that gorgeous white mantle, chic slate fireplace surround, and the handsome ebony hardwood. Again please excuse their empty bottom shelf- they just moved back into their home and had a baby two days later. They’ve been pretty busy these days!

Img 3681

Here’s the lovely dining room with a gorgeous black chandelier that absolutely steals the show. They were storing many of their items for the renovation at a storage facility which ended up getting burglarized, but thankfully no one made off with the chandelier. Whew. As for the table, this one is just a place holder while a larger one is on order. But aren’t those black chairs and long white curtains great with the stunning black chandelier? Me-ow.

Img 3692

And speaking of me-ow, their new kitchen rocks our socks. We were head over heels in love with everything about it: the gorgeous vintage inspired pendant lights over the island, the glossy marble counters, the chic little white stools, the stainless hood…

Img 3664

… and this amazing pull down faucet (one of Barrett’s contributions to the decor).

Img 3673

Here’s their restful and dreamy living room which opens right up to their spacious kitchen. From the dramatic oversized pendant lamp and the large armoire (which they freshened with a coat of white paint) to the plush overstuffed seating and the french doors that lead to a cozy little balcony, we couldn’t have loved Christi & Barrett’s aesthetic more.

Img 3761

And just off the kitchen and the living area was this sweet little mudroom, complete with a decal on the frosted door and a washer and dryer hidden behind some seriously fantastic storage doors (with even more room to stash things in the cabinets above).

Img 3704

The bedroom is also on the first floor, and again there are gorgeous billowy curtains and lots of natural light that floods the room. One of the coolest details in this room is the fact that their headboard is the top of their old dining table, which they mounted on the wall after hiring an artist to draw black stripes (with a Sharpie!) on the deep chocolate wood tabletop for a sophisticated zebra-wood effect that gleams in the sun.

Img 3737

And of course their bathroom is luxurious and grand. With a marble topped double sink…

Img 3749

… and a chandelier capped soaking tub, the room is as close to heaven as they come.

Img 3715

And we can’t forget the second floor nursery, created before they knew whether their baby was a boy or a girl (s’prise, it was a girl!). We love the green and yellow scheme and adore the chevron patterned fabric that Christi selected for the valance, the floor pillows stacked in the corner…

Img 3769

… and the leftover scraps that she framed for some festive nursery art work! We also love that she purchased the chandelier at a big box store (originally in wrought iron) and spray painted it white for a sweet and soft effect. Adorable.

Img 3777

So there it is. Christi & Barrett’s amazing home makeover. Thanks so much for letting us poke around your fabulous home C & B! And we hope everyone enjoyed the virtual tour. We can’t wait to share our next long distance house crashing adventure, so stay tuned…

This home is truly one of my all-time favorites. Christi and Barrett have impeccable taste that permeates through every tiny detail of their home. Even the door knobs are a show stopper!

Until you’re in the thick of it, it’s hard to know how truly difficult it is to pick out every single detail of your home while thinking big picture.

BRAVO to an amazing and adorable couple!

    Hey everyone,

So glad you’re loving our latest house crashing mission. I just shot off an email to Christi & Barrett begging them to answer your questions about everything from the lighting to the crib so they’ll hopefully hop on here soon and give you guys the scoop.

As for having any extra pics, these are all I have (no extras of the shower and the close up of the headboard didn’t come out due to some pretty great natural light streaming in at the time I took the photo) so it looks like you might have to somehow convince Christi & Barrett to invite you over for some tea to see the rest of their amazing home.

So glad you guys are showing them some love. Their home is definitely a major stunner!

I love your fireplace mantle and surround! Perfect and not too large for a small scale home. Could you please send me a few more pictures taken directly from the front and would you share the depth measurement of the mantle shelf?
I live in a house built in 1950 and the fireplace has no mantle. previous owner tore it off to “modernize”. I would like to put something very similar to yours back on to add a finished traditional focal point to the living room.
      Great Job!!

Sherry and John – thank you so much for coming to crash our house! You’re too sweet! We had so much fun and it was great meeting you! Thank you also to all of your followers for all the great comments! So nice!

I’ve been away from my computer this afternoon, so I’m sorry that I’m just now responding. Here are answers to the questions posted so far…

    – We used Carrera Marble for the kitchen and bathroom counter tops. It’s price is equivalent to your standard granite, and we love the look! We also researched granite that had a similar appearance, but those options were all higher-end granite and very expensive.
    – We got our kitchen pendants from rejuvenation.com. It’s a GREAT site with TONS of lighting options. And it’s affordable!
    – I’ll talk to Sherry and figure out the best way to get more pictures to you guys (master bath shower and master bedroom headboard).
    – The chandelier in the master bath isn’t to code, but we love the look, so we couldn’t resist! We installed it after the inspection. ;)
    – I’ll do some digging and see if I can find some sketches of our house plan and send them to Sherry with the other pics. We kept the floor plan really open, so I think it feels bigger than it actually is.
    – The bedding in both the master bedroom and guest room are from West Elm. The crib is the Loom Crib from Nurseryworks.
    – We got the nursery chandelier from Home Depot and spray painted it white. It was a great bargain!

Thanks to everyone for all of your wonderful comments. SO SO Nice!!

Thank you! We have red oak hardwoods throughout the house and we used 2 coats of ebony stain to get them as dark as possible. If you’re starting from scratch and want dark floors, you may want to choose a different kind of hardwood. We weren’t sure we were going to be able to get the red oak as dark as we wanted, but luckily it worked out!

I’ve had the best time going back through and reading everyone’s comments and questions! Thanks to everyone! I’m sorry that I haven’t answered some of the questions before now – I didn’t realize there had been more posts…
    – Branches w/ green balls: the branches are from Crate and Barrel, and they still have them. Just search “Chestnut Branch” on the Crate and Barrel website, and it’ll come up.
    – Paint Colors: Unforunately, I don’t have the paint color for the white. We just had our painter match it to a cabinet door. Maybe try matching it to your cabinet door or a piece of molding? We also used several greys in the house that were Ralph Lauren colors. We decreased/varied the intensity so that they were almost white – Cool Grey (at 50%), Lamp Room Grey (at 100% and 50%).
    – Chandelier: I got the chandelier off of ebay, but there are still more! If you search “black crystal chandelier” you’ll see it on the first page of the search. It’s the 7 light option. I got it from a store called “easy*livin” and they were great to work with. It looks like there is a chandelier liquidator selling the same or close to the same chandelier for less, but I didn’t work with them, so just make sure you read their feedback before ordering from them just to be safe.
    – Door Knobs: Our door knobs are Emtek. We chose the white porcelain knobs with the chrome regular rosette. (http://www.emtekproducts.com/porcelian_knobsets.php)
-Mudroom Door: We just got a door with frosted glass and ordered vinyl letters for $10 from Speedy Signs (www.speedsigns.com). It’s great! You can change your font, color, size, etc. on the site and preview it, so you know exactly what it’ll look like when you receive it. The word/phrase is already spaced out perfectly, and you just have to stick it on your door – it’s super easy!

Thanks for all of your awesome feedback! Just let me know if there are any more questions!

Hi Katie! The outside of our house is Hardiplank, so it looks and feels like wood, but it’s actually a type of siding. The color is Ralph Lauren, and I think the name of it is Portrait White, but I’ll confirm, and let you know. Thanks!

Hi Eva! I actually got the TV cabinet at a scratch and dent store closeby for a fraction of the price and had it refinished. I had the outside painted white and the inside painted green to match our rug (which hadn’t arrived in time to make the picture), and I replaced the hardware. The cabinet is a Hooker Furniture piece, and they still carry it. (http://www.hookerfurniture.com/index.cfm/furniture/furniture-catalog.show-product/American-furniture/384-55-463/entertainment-center.cfm) If you call or visit one of the big furniture dealers (Boyles or Furnitureland South), you can probably get a pretty good deal on it. Good luck!

Hi Sonja! I believe that it was a Benjamin Moore paint color – Homestead Moss. I know that’s the name, but I’m not 100% if it was BM paint. Another good green is Ryegrass by Sherwin Williams. If it’s too deep for you, you can always cut it by 50%. Hope this helps! Thanks!

This is a lovely house, really well done–but the chandelier over the bathtub is a huge no-no—this is not to code since someone could stand up while they are in the water filled tub and touch the light—and that would be a tragic situation….please tell Christi and Barrett!!
