Who’s The Joss?

Last October we had fun teaming up with Joss & Main to curate a sale event over on their site (which entailed picking favorites from hundreds of items in their database to make a “Young House Love collection”), so when they invited us back for a spring collection – and agreed to an extra special perk for you guys this time around (more on that in a sec) – we were psyched. Side note: I used to think that word was spelled “siked” until freshman year when my BFF laughed ’til she cried and finally clued me in.

It’s really funny to hear the title of “curator” used to describe us (except maybe Curator Of Outfits With Dog Hair And Cream Cheese Smears), but seriously, getting the opportunity to reopen a little virtual decor store of sorts over there for the next 60 hours is awesome. And although we didn’t set the prices ourselves, we did our best to find a variety of things in a nice wide price range (from under $25 accessories to $250+ furnishings). This collection even includes some things we’ve bought – from our happy yellow kitchen radio to the gray nailhead chair in our living room. So here’s a sampling of our collection that’s over on Joss & Main through Saturday morning (there’s a lot more over there). And because we like to be 100% transparent with you guys, it’s Joss & Main’s protocol to offer a small commission to the folks who curate sales on their site, so it’s just like any other side gig that helps us pay the bills (like our magazine column, our book, and our paint collection – you can read more general blog income info here). But here’s the twist. Joss & Main also offers small referral fees in the form of store credit (which is actually available to anyone who refers someone who makes a purchase) but we wanted to pay those forward. So instead of accepting the referral fees, we asked if we could save all those credits up in a separate “gift account” and dish ’em out in a big fat giveaway for one lucky reader next week. And they said yes. Cue the cartwheels!

So stay tuned for that next Monday. In the meantime, our collection will be available for the next three days (until Saturday morning). We had so much fun putting this together, and we hope it inspires you in some way – even if it’s just to spray paint something from the thrift store or otherwise do your own DIY spin on something that grabs ya. And speaking of things that grab you, what accessories have you been into lately? I’ve found myself inexplicably drawn to lamps (as in we don’t have enough surfaces in our house for all the lamps I want to adopt) and serving dishes (perhaps due to the new open shelves in the kitchen?). Meanwhile John has a newfound love of accordion folders and house plants. Go figure.

    Holy smokes! So many things are already sold out! You guys picked a lot of awesome things to include in your collection. I really loved the zigzag floor pillows…maybe I’ll have to try making some on my own!

    Love you collection, you wouldn’t happen to know or should I just assume that the out door lights are for hard wiring?

    Hope you got my credit for becoming a member the 1st time you had a collection cause you guys deserve all the good that comes your way :)

      Thanks Natalie! You’re so sweet. Yes, I would assume the outdoor light is meant to be hard wired unless since it doesn’t indicate that it’s a plug-in fixture. Hope it helps!

    Any word on Joss & Main carrying your ottoman again? I almost jumped out of my chair in excitement when I saw your things on Joss & Main last night. I have been trying to track down the ottoman since you first posted it!

      Amen! We tried to hunt it down for the collection but it wasn’t in their database! We promise to keep looking for it if we do future sales with them though (along with our living room rug for folks who have asked for that)!

    Also, for the longest time, I thought the expression was “oh cheese!” not “oh jeez/geez.” Sometimes I still catch myself saying ‘cheese.’ HA!

    I checked out your collection last night after receiving Joss’ e-mail and I fell in LOVE with that angelo:Home rustic coffee table! My current coffee table is in need of a major facelift so I’m hoping to create something similar :)

    You guys are so awesome…as always!! I don’t know if it’s because “gifting” is not my primary love language (http://www.5lovelanguages.com/), or if it’s because, I already get so much benefit from ya’lls site, but I seriously feel like I win something (and my blog-love for you guys grows) every time ya’ll give something away (or even talk about giving something away).     I Love Joss & Main, but sadly they don’t ship to Canada :(
    I have emailed them to ask, and they say that they hopefully will within the year or year and half. I am not holding my breath :(
    So, for now, I just window shop what they are selling each email I receive.
    I am so jealous of you guys (and others in the USA) you get such great deals!

    My husband says it’s time to cool it on the pillows, but I’m a firm believer that you can’t own enough pillows…whether by sewing them yourself or finding a great deal online. I recently found beautiful silk couch pillows for 12 bucks each (down from $50) and promptly bought a couple. I have everything shipped to my office, because hubby works at home. You should have seen the eyeroll when I walked THAT box through the door!

      Haha, I have a total pillow problem. John has banned them. But I agree. Pillows are like friends, you can’t have too many of them! And eyerolls are meant to be ignored. Haha.

    hi! you’ve referenced joss & main so many times, so i clicked on the link to check out your collection. the moment i saw that “vernon mirror”… holy cow.. my heart skipped a beat and i scrambled back to your post to snag the instant invite. but alas, it’s sold out!! i’ve been coveting the similar mirror you had over the desk in your family room (btw, where did you move it?). i love everything you guys picked! i look forward to checking out everything joss & main has to offer. :)

    Love this collection, I’ve been admiring that radio since y’all incorporated it into your house! I’ve been needing just that for my kitchen too!

    I also wanted to express my appreciation for your transparency! I’ve been turned off by other blogs when the posts became masqueraded sales pitches. I love that you only endorse what you love, and that you are totally honest about it. And what a nice bonus that you are turning that profit back to your readers.

      They went towards the living room rug we purchased (you can read more about that here) but we definitely didn’t have that much credit to cover all of our purchases!

    Joss & main must super love you guys…your collection is totally selling out! I am dying for your living room ottoman. We have a six month old baby, and I just cringe very time I see our pointy edged coffee table or a bunch of his toys lying around the living room. I will keep looking for it. Great job on the collection!

    On the story of funny spellings…i work in finance-ish field and when you don’t want to accept a wire transfer of cash for whatever reason you “DK” it, as in “don’t know” so it gets sent back to the sender. BUT I had never seen it spelled out “DK” so I wrote to this super smart guy at Barclays that the wire transfer was “decayed”. He corrected me which was pretty embarassing. And now it always makes me think of a decaying animal. So gross I know and just to clarify, I do love animals.

    Sorry to clog your email with two comments but I forgot to tell you that I saw your collection last night and I love it! I had to look at it bleary-eyed on my phone before I could fall asleep.

    You guys have really helped me realize my love for color (I’m a sucker for green, blue and yellow) and that I should decorate/paint with the colors that I like rather than what someone else tells me will look nice. Thank you for that!

    I was totally coveting the Yellow urn on your kitchen counter and wondered where you got it! Now I know! I sent the link to my husband and *hope* he will take that hint! There were so many beautiful pieces that were way out of my price range I didn’t think he could complain too much.

    I love the look of so many of the upholstered chairs and sofas on Joss and Main but am skittish about purchasing. What if they are uncomfortable, everything is non-returnable. Have you ever bought a sofa on a website without sitting on it first?

      We bought the gray chair with the nailheads and just crossed our fingers! Thankfully it’s really comfy. It is pretty scary if you’re getting a sofa but for the big discount (some are marked down by hundreds) it might be worth the risk. Maybe try looking up amazon ratings or reviews on another site if the name is listed (like Safavieh) first to get some more info? Hope it helps!

    You know, you don’t have to justify yourselves every time you get a commission from selling something. This blog is your job, people get that. And no one’s judging. Just don’t be apologetic, you have every right to make a living off of this.
