Video House Tour 2010

We know you’ve seen lots of pictures of our house. But lots of video, not so much. In fact, we realized it’s been over a year and a half since we’ve posted a room-by-room tour of Casa Petersik. And in that time we’ve swapped a spare bedroom for a nursery, added a two-person office/playroom to our guest room, and totally gutted our bathroom. And although you’ve seen pics of those makeovers we know sometimes it helps to see ’em in 3D (and now in HD thanks to our latest purchase: the Flip Mino HD). So you can finally visualize how the rooms all connect. No breaking and entering required.

Plus we’re not gonna lie. We’ve been cleaning the house like crazy to put it on the market, so it’s as good a time as any to document this baby. Without further ado, we give you fine people The 2010 YHL House Tour (view it on YouTube here):

Yes Clara passed gas at the end of the video. How’s that for keeping it real?

And if you’re in the mood for a blast from the past or two, you can see our original half-house tour from November of 2007 (warning: the kitchen is mid-renovation) or the updated full-house tour from March of 2008. Oh, and there’s also the better production-quality version of the tour, shot by The Nest in November of 2008. So much self-conscious cringing, so little time.

Psst- What’s been around my lady’s neck lately?  Check out our BabyCenter post of the week for the scoop.

Hi guys ;D I have been a follower for quite some time now! And enjoy your blog even more then the first time I read it. Thank you for all the details you always pass along, you truely are an inspiration to the DIYers like myself. One question…when one is wanting to purchase a home to renovate/fix up to live in and resell later what must you look for?Is location, location, location still the main concern as we have always been told or can that sit on the back burner? We have a 2700sq. home that we had built 13yrs. ago and I am ready to sell and DOWN size to 1500sq. and would like to buy one that needs some LOVE as you say ;D Sorry so long! Thank you….

      Hey Kerry,

Yup, we think location is a huge factor! We always think of that phrase “buy the worst house in the nicest neighborhood”. Of course it’s all about potential and the layout and other things that aren’t easy to change (like the lot size and the schools) factor in too. We’ll be posting our must-have and nice-to-have list as we house hunt (once we figure it out!). Fun, fun, fun.

    Hi –

I’m a fan and have been following your blog for about 6 months or so. I have a question about your pocket doors – di you add those yourself or have someone install them? Do you talk about that anywhere on the blog? I have several areas in my house that would benefit from pocket doors and would love to know more about their installation, cost, etc.

Thanks and good luck with your home sale and house hunting!!

      Hey Crystal,

Those pocket doors were already there when we moved in (they were oak and we painted them white, but that’s the full extent of our involvement). Maybe you can google around or check youtube.com for a pocket door installation tutorial?

    Hey Sherry-

I’m not sure if you’ve ever addressed this…but I was wondering about your decision not to have a glider/rocker in Clara’s nursery. We have a small space too, and I dont think a glider/rocker will fit…but everyone says we NEED to have one. You seem to be managing just fine but wanted to know your thoughts on the subject. Thanks!

      Hey Libby,

We love that chair in there! We use it to read to Clara and I nurse her in there, but it’s not my only nursing station. For example, I nurse all over the house (the office, the sofa in the living room, the den, the bedroom, even the sunroom) so I don’t mind the fact that the chair doesn’t glide (since the sofa and the bed and all the other places I nurse don’t do that either). Hope it helps!

Your house is so tidy, I have to ask one tiny question.
The things I have lying around are mostly books, because I have them almost everywhere (I even have a bathroom- bookshelf). Where do you store your books?

      October 6, 2010 at 12:07 pm

      Hey Sommerkind,

We have them everywhere! In a stack on the desk in the den, stacked on the ottoman under that desk, stacked on the bottom shelf of the coffee table in the living room, stored on the green bookshelf in the living room, stacked on the two ottomans under the console table by the door, stored in the bookcase in our office/playroom/guest room, etc. Those are mostly pretty hardcover books that we love though- we must admit that we usually give softcover books to friends or borrow them from the library since we only read those once.

You seem to get the “did I think of remodeling” question a lot, so what if you wrote a post about it? I’d be interested to see in specific terms what you thought about doing (and why you rejected these ideas)… it would be like a little YHL version of that home design show “Love it or Leave It”… :)

We live in 1000 square feet, so we can relate! We only have one sitting area, though… you guys have three (!). Do you like having so many separate places to lounge on sofas, or is that negotiable in the move?

      Hey Maya,

We do have a post planned full of what we’re looking for in a new house (and why this house just wouldn’t work for the long haul) so as soon as we figure out what we really actually want (still learning as we go!) we’ll share that info!

I love the house tour! Thanks for sharing that with us. I had a question about one of the framed pieces of art hanging in the living room. It’s the one with the large P with some smaller writing on it. I wasn’t able to see what is says. Does that have something to do with your last name? Where did you get it from? Loved the tour! I always try to layout a home in my mind when I see pictures, and it was pretty easy to do with all your photos and the floor plan posts, but the moving camera bit really sealed the deal! Would you consider doing the same thing in your yard? I don’t think we’ve ever seen the side yard opposite the driveway, and it would be cool to explore your landscaping/compost bin hiding spot/back woods a bit more before you say goodbye The House That Started the Blog.

The only thing that is missed in your video is that we can not compare how it looked before. I hope that when you will buy a new house , you will make a virtual video at the begining and maybe at the end( if you of course would like to sell it once again). I think it won’t take a long time after somebody will buy it, your house is beautiful, you put a lot of effort to make it look so nice. Hey There! I just found this by accident while searching for home design and furnishing sources. LOVE what you are doing! So many neat ideas and your enthusiasm is so engaging. I am an older first-time house owner, in a brick one-story ranch built in 1956. Always looking for ideas as we just landed here about a month ago. We don’t have a ton of space but do have a finished basement almost as large as the upstairs footprint. I am going to use the washer/dryer idea and I really like the floating shelves too! I also like the fern in the bath. Ferns were made for bathrooms. The extra humidity is totally going to help the asparagus fern thrive. They don’t like to dry out. I’ll be back.
