Young House Love » Our First House » Video House Tour 2010

Video House Tour 2010

We know you’ve seen lots of pictures of our house. But lots of video, not so much. In fact, we realized it’s been over a year and a half since we’ve posted a room-by-room tour of Casa Petersik. And in that time we’ve swapped a spare bedroom for a nursery, added a two-person office/playroom to our guest room, and totally gutted our bathroom. And although you’ve seen pics of those makeovers we know sometimes it helps to see ’em in 3D (and now in HD thanks to our latest purchase: the Flip Mino HD). So you can finally visualize how the rooms all connect. No breaking and entering required.

Plus we’re not gonna lie. We’ve been cleaning the house like crazy to put it on the market, so it’s as good a time as any to document this baby. Without further ado, we give you fine people The 2010 YHL House Tour (view it on YouTube here):

Yes Clara passed gas at the end of the video. How’s that for keeping it real?

And if you’re in the mood for a blast from the past or two, you can see our original half-house tour from November of 2007 (warning: the kitchen is mid-renovation) or the updated full-house tour from March of 2008. Oh, and there’s also the better production-quality version of the tour, shot by The Nest in November of 2008. So much self-conscious cringing, so little time.

Psst- What’s been around my lady’s neck lately?  Check out our BabyCenter post of the week for the scoop.

I’ve gotta say, now I completely understand why you all are selling your house, it’s much smaller than it appears in your photos and there’s no more room to grow! So, sorry for my comment the day you spilled the beans – I was just so sad that you’d be leaving this house after putting so much love into it!

Hopefully the next will be bigger! (that’s what she said!!! hahaha sorry, I love The Office so I couldn’t resist!)

I look forward to seeing your upcoming renovation projects! And yeah, the fart was too cute!

Great video! Way to go, Clara! Adorable. She might be mad about that when she is older.

My son (4) was sitting on the couch with me watching this and asked if we could go to Mrs. Sherry’s house. I had to explain to him that you live very far away, and that I don’t ‘really’ know you.

I love this! I don’t live in a ranch, but my home is pretty modestly sized and my “master bath” is just about as big as yours. It’s always encouraging to see how much style and class can be injected into a smaller home. Too often it seems we as a society are obsessed with the “bigger is better” thing and your tour shows that modest can still provide a real wow factor. Kudos! Looking forward to seeing how you take what you already have and translate it into a new home.

Question for you guys: how did you hang the photos above your sofa in the den (on the brick wall)? We have concrete walls in our TV room, and hanging things is so difficult! We used 3M velcro-like strips to hang some pictures, but for heavier things…any ideas/suggestions? Thanks! As always, loved the tour, and Clara’s addition at the end. Teehee.

      Hey Katie,

We actually used a masonry drill bit (you can find one at a home improvement store and it can work with your existing drill). Just be sure to drill into the mortar and not the brick itself (which can shatter). Good luck!

I know you mentioned you are keeping it clean for potential buyers, but how do you keep the house so neat? Has the way you clean or keep things tidy changed since you had Clara? I’m very jealous, as I sit in my mess of a house. :)

      Hey Elyse,

Our secret really is to have a designated spot for everything when it’s not in use, so we can put it away if we have someone walking through. For example, Clara’s car seat goes back out to the car, her Bumbo and doorway bouncer fit in the closet, her travel swing can be folded and stored above the laundry, etc. Then we just do a quick sweep for burp cloths and nursing pads and any other items we’d be mortified to show a stranger. And I change my shirt, cause goodness knows it’s coated in spit up. That’s a given around here.

It looks great!!! I’m sure it will sell quickly even with the down market. And might I add that all of you look fabulous ;) (sorta jealous that you weren’t sporting some baby finger crumb marks on your shoulder like I do everyday…)
I have one favor to ask though- please please please, paint your back door a lighter version of the aqua on the floor. It’s driving me crazy being white while the walls are a buttery cream and aqua is equally as inviting as your awesome red front door. Seriously, your house is awesome and I don’t know what we would all do without the 4 of you in our lives!

      Hey Jessica,

It’s just 1300 square feet here (plus the sunroom which isn’t heated and cooled so it can’t be counted as “finished square feet”). We definitely need a bit more space to grow, but we don’t want anything too huge at all! We just love a cute modest house with lots of potential.

Loved this walk through, it gives a great feel for the layout and size.

I am mystified by one thing though – what you bought as a “formal dining room” is really far from the kitchen! You’d have to go out the kitchen, all the way through the living room, into that hallway, then to the dining room. How weird, no? Unless maybe you moved around some walls in your kitchen renovation…

      Hey Jbhat,

We did think long and hard about staying right here and adding onto this house (which we mentioned a few times along our blogging journey since that was the plan for a while). In the end we realized there were things about the existing house/layout that wouldn’t change with an addition, so the more flexible (and fun) thing to do would be to start fresh and find another house in need of some serious love!

      Hey Hannah,

The built in wardrobes and bed frame definitely convey along with all of our appliances, the counter we built over the washer and dryer, all the window treatments and all of the light fixtures among other things. There are debates about leaving Clara’s aqua capiz chandelier behind because we love it so much, so we might try to track down the same one for her new room or bring it with us if the buyer would prefer a basic flush light (which we would replace it with). We’ll share more details as things develop- we need a buyer first!

We’ve thought about closing off the doorway from the kitchen to the old formal dining room (now office and future kids room), but weren’t sure about disrupting the circular flow of our house right now.
