Thrift Store Shopping

Ok, I keep mentioning that Katie B and I had some fun stared into each other’s eyes for 48 hours straight and she posted about the whole shebang right here (update: Katie’s blog is giving her issues, so maybe try clicking over later or tomorrow instead of right now). And by whole shebang I mean the part where Will went to the bathroom in the tub (numero dos) while bathing with Clara. And how Jeremy and John accidentally wore the same exact beverage themed shirt on Sunday…

Sprite Matching

She also touched on our pedicure adventures…

Pedicures

… and mountaintop enjoyment…

Toes At The Top

It’s all here (update: just remember to click over later or tomorrow since her blog is giving her grief).

But back to our little Goodwill excursion. We decided that trolling the aisles of a thrift store in search of stuff that was take-home worthy might be blog worthy (“might” being the operative word). So here’s what we came away with: an 11 minute video of two giddy weirdos who giggle like 5th graders whenever some sort of innuendo slips in. So to answer your impending questions: no, we don’t know what our malfunction is. And yes, this regression is probably Freudian. So think of us not as adults and mothers but as two immature gals who can’t calm down for thirty minutes to make anything remotely polished and posed. For those at work who can’t watch it, just envision twelve year old girls braiding each other’s hair and jumping on the bed while having a pillow fight after applying sparkly nail polish and swooning over a Bon Jovi poster. And for those who can watch it: I’m sorry. We just can’t help ourselves. Tweens may get hyper after too much sugar during a sleepover, but we’re like that at Goodwill at noon.

A few things to note:

  • We used our usual insane method of video entry by squatting and then standing up into frame (first established here).
  • Somehow we managed to reference male parts, maxi pads, and bras in under eleven minutes of tape. Yes, we’re ashamed.
  • Katie’s shirt is from the J Crew Outlet (I loved it so much I had to ask, and I figured you guys would too).
  • We used a bleep. Somehow they just make everything funnier (but maybe only if you’re us).
  • The way John walks through frame holding Clara while I’m talking about those tiny chairs kills me (it’s his Vanna White expression).
  • I’m wearing Katie’s flip flops, which is why they’re a little big (my wedges weren’t “proper attire” for running around all day).
  • There’s a dorky Friends reference in there. Almost immediately. Please tell me you noticed.
  • Katie is about a foot taller and ten times more glamorous than I am (aka: no need to comment about my short shorts + pasty leg combo).
  • People walk by. The intercom blares. But not one employee asked what we were up to or told us to stop. Even when we filmed at the checkout. Gotta love those friendly Georgians.
  • At one point you can hear the song “Yackity Yack” playing in the background. Sweet soundtrack, right?

Oh and we meant to work a little end section into the video about what NOT to buy at Goodwill, but since the video was waaay longer (and substantially more embarrassing) than we expected, we didn’t want to drag it out. So here are a few shots of what NOT to buy at Goodwill:

Katie Coconut

Sherry Dolls

All in favor of not buying those things, say I. Oh and you might wonder how Jeremy, Will, John, and Clara kept themselves busy while we Flip cam’d our way through the store. Well, things like giant wooden spoons kept them entertained:

Our Family1

Seriously, every time John brought it near Clara’s mouth she opened wide like a bald little baby bird:

Family 2

Family 3

And while we’re on the Goodwill hunting topic (I’ll pause while someone says “how about them apples”), what treasures have you found at Goodwill or Salvation Army or other places of the like? Have you seen anything that was so mind-numbingly crazy that you actually had to pick it up and examine it more closely to make sure it was, in fact, real (for me it was the gilded ceramic double unicorn vase – I thought they only existed in alternate universes). Come on, it’s Thursday afternoon. Let’s gab.

Psst- A big fat thanks to sweet Katie Bower for being such an amazing host and friend and fellow weirdo. So glad we met thanks to this crazy world of blogging and actually surpassed the “blog friend” title to become real life friends. Miss you already. And you didn’t burn that fajita meat, it was just well done. Just the way I like it.

Psssst- To watch some other terrible KB + SP = gigglefest videos, here’s one, here’s another, here’s one more, and here’s another one. That’s a lot of giggling.

my best purchase ever at goodwill? a brand new chocolate brown men’s cashmere coat. $5 (half price sale). Walked into the oohlala British woolens shop it came from the next day.. so swanky you almost needed to pay to breathe in it, and the cheapest coats – summer coats, as this was in July, were …wait for it… $1400. yes. major score.

    That coat was BEAUTIFUL.

But there’s definitely a lot of ‘who on earth would ever own THIS’ stuff as well.

    >A quick shout-out to Katie B. Was awesome seeing you, I’m off to your blog for the first time!

But first, I totally would have bought at least one of those tall thin doll chairs, if not the pair. First thing that came to mind was how awesome they would look painted a crisp white and placed in the tall sections of your turquoise dining room built-ins.

Aww nuts. Maybe next time :p

Watch out, John. My brother once got very badly bitten by our baby sister when he was teasing her in a similar way. She got fed up with not being fed, reached out, grabbed his hand and bit in.

Clara looks like she was getting to the point of desperation, there… you never know!

I spend FAR too much time at the Goodwill and other various thrift stores near us. Today, (yes, I did go today – can you say “total addict?”) one of the cashier ladies asked me why she hadn’t seen me in a while *cue the so-embarrassed-because-no-one-shops-here-this-much-normally blush!!* I keep finding amazing things though, which keeps reinforcing my addiction. It’s a deliciously vicious cycle. I recently scored a great pair of lamps that I re-purposed, along with a bamboo-bordered mirror. If you want, check them out here:

    http://akitchentablefortwo.blogspot.com/2011/06/exciting-happenings-and-lamp-reveal.html

    and here:

    http://akitchentablefortwo.blogspot.com/2011/06/pillows-and-lamps-and-puppies-oh-my.html

Also, LOVE the video. It’s validation to me that I’m not the only gal who gathers good friends to go thrifting while making odd references to canceled (yet completely AWESOME TV shows) and drags the hubby along. The entertainment value is just too good – in fact, today I saw a yard gnome head that was obviously broken off from it’s original body that had been poorly super-glued to a headless stuffed teddy bear. It was like Chuckie meets Sid from Toy Story – SCARY!! Oh how I WISH I had taken a picture, although I’m sure it will end up in my worst nightmare, so I’ll see it again. Anyway, hope you came away with some treasures apart from the double unicorn vase – which I feel could have been quite the conversation piece ;)

On the way home from getting her cast off the other day (fractured wrist from falling off swing) we celebrated by popping into a Goodwill. Found a cute vintage school chair with attached desk for $2.99. How could I say no? It’s so stinking cute! Also got a vintage alarm clock for 0.49. Fun times!

I saw a mason jar that was going for $20…which is pretty expensive. It looked really cool with a bluish-green tinge, but I didn’t buy it. I did notice the number 13 on the bottom, though. Later that day I googled it and it was apparently an 1858 mason jar that some people were selling online for $75!

An insanely gorgeous mid-century stereo console (with a big hidden storage cabinet in the middle) at our local Salvation Army for – get this – $10!! Yes, One – Zero. It will be our new entertainment center. It’s so fabulous that I am anxious for the store to reopen so the hubs & I can go pick it up. I almost tore my pocket off trying to get the $$ out to pay for it! On that same trip I also picked up four new cans of Rustoleum spray paint for $1 each and 2 (new) gallons of Valspar in Ultra White for $6 each. It may have been the best day of my life!

Hi! I’m campaigning for BFF #2! My husband and I just moved to VA Beach a few months ago. We live RIGHT on the beach and our condo has a pool. And I haven’t done anything to the place yet, so it looks like the Golden Girls lived here before us! There are HUUUGE mirrors in this place that need to be taken care of! So anytime you guys want a vacation, the beach is only 2 hours from you guys! We had a baby a few months earlier than you, and I’ve been reading your blog faithfully for years! I was in the Navy, now a stay at home Mom, and my husband is still in the Navy. We often want to go to Richmond but just haven’t made it yet. So even if you ever just visit VA Beach, we’d love to hear from you! You can check out my facebook page at the name above, since I don’t have a blog=)
