Steals & Deals: Bottoms Up

Many of you know that I have a giant binder full of clear plastic sleeves where I shove a ton of tear sheets from magazines, catalogs and other places that inspire me (read more about how I organize that magical binder right here).

Binder Full Of Home Improve

And one ripped corner of a magazine that has been in my binder pretty much since its inception has been an image from Elle Decor with gorgeous vintage looking glasses in green, yellow, blue and pink with recessed designs on them that create a light and almost sea-glass-ish effect. They’re credited as being from this super swanky store (which doesn’t happen to have a shot of them on their site- boo) and they’re listed as being $13 a pop there. Kind of pricey for drinking glasses but they’re just so lovely I’ve kept the torn magazine corner around for years. I guess I have eye candy abandonment issues.

World Market Glasses Not

Then something serendipitous happened this weekend.

World Market Glasses 1

I found insanely similar looking glasses at World Market. For just… wait for it… $2.99 a pop! They were available in clear, green, blue, and pink- but you know we grabbed the green and blue ones (three of each, six in total) since they feel the most like “us.” I can’t wait for our next gathering so I can break out these babies and liven up the table. I love that it’ll be a subtly mixed and matched tableau thanks to the two layered tones that we went for. Because there’s nothing like green and blue glass goblets (with fleur-de-lis on them, no less) to make you feel oh so luxe whenever you sip from them.

And sip from them I must. John actually has a huge rule that I’m not allowed to purchase anything that we won’t use regularly (which is great because we don’t have cabinets full of “special occasion only” servingware and china). So whenever a craving for lemonade or chocolate milk has hit in the past few days I’ve just reached for one of these babies. And let me tell you, I feel very posh indeed. Much more so than I used to with my clear Ikea glasses of yore. I’ve even been thinking of going back for more since they’d also make adorable votive holders or even pencil cups on my desk. Gotta love something that multitasks (and looks so good doing it).

Of course we love that we spent $18 for six (as opposed to nearly that amount for ONE of the designer ones). In fact six of the designer ones would have set us back $78! And I even laughed to myself when we later came across another similar version of them (in green and blue only) at Anthropologie- which incidentally is charging $6 a pop. It’s definitely a break from the $13 designer price, but our $2.99 World Market finds are still the lowest that we’ve seen for anything even remotely similar. So there you have our recent drinking glass victory. Cheers to hunting down deals! And speaking of sleuthing out the look for less, have any of you found dead ringers for something a lot pricier and couldn’t believe your luck? Share and share alike.

Beautiful glasses! I love World Market:)

My crazy awesome find happened when I was a heartbeat away from custom ordering woven wood roman shades that were going to cost me roughly $550 for TWO. Then as I was perusing Lowe’s one day, I stumbled upon 2 deadringers for my customs ON CLEARANCE and in OUR SIZE for…..wait for it…$7 each. I almost stroked out. They look gorgeous in our living room.

Pier One used to carry glasses like that – I picked up four on clearance for $8.00. Unfortunately, I promptly broke one, so I guess I’ll need to go to World Market to find some that will go with mine!!

I love World Market, too! I have been meaning to send you a DIY WM find that you inspired, but I digress…

I was looking for a barrister bookcase FOREVER but couldn’t swallow the $300, $500, up to $1000 cost. An hour before closing my husband asked if I wanted to look in Staples. I refused at first and then begrudgingly followed exhausted from no luck all day. Turned out they didn’t have any but their system showed that one store in the whole state did.

It was a 45-minute drive to the St. Augustine, FL store (arriving just minutes before they closed) to learn it was marked out of their inventory so we left with it for $6!!! It is my most prized possession and my Mom still tells people about “the find.” =)

I really like those little vintage sets of glasses you see in antique shops, but they are so expensive! And then one day my grandmother gave me a beautiful set that my dad had given her when he was a little boy. I drink from them sometimes, but mostly I use them for little vases of flowers.

I love World Market… great find!

I’ve been meaning to make an idea binder as well for quite some time now. However, most of my ideas have originated from online and are scattered in different organizational systems on my computer! I have a saved DIY section with bookmarked pages in Firefox, multiple Google Docs with just a ton of inspiring links thrown in (often with notes or other random ideas next to them), and then of course there are the links that people send me via email or facebook, and things that I email to myself to hang on to – which turned into a DIY folder in my email as well! I’d love to have an actual binder full of ideas, but I’m trying to make “greener” decisions lately, and I feel like printing out hundreds of pages would be going in the wrong direction. Any ideas for how to keep online ideas organized? I think I have way too many systems going on at once! Thanks! :)

I had a similar experience when I found these babies.  I saw a set of “international greetings” glasses in the AirMall magazine for a recent flight, but they (as other products in that mag often do) were very overpriced.  CB2 had a set of six narrow barware glasses for $19.99… and I really liked the fact that they all had the “cheers” of each country on them.  In my opinion, much more appropriate for the occasions where I would use them!

Gorgeous – another option would be to pick up depression glasses at flea markets, auctions or estate sales. You’ll get a better quality product, made in America and another bit of saving the planet! I have a couple of decades on you – I’ve found that there is a difference in glassware quality that can justify a price difference – but $10 a glass? Nope, you scored! (they’re beautiful!)

And John and I think alike – there isn’t anything in my house that isn’t usable at all times… In fact I have an antique tea cup collection displayed in a beautiful glass enclosed display cabinet that I inherited from my Nana and my guests almost flip when I grab them one when we’re having tea! LOL! “You’re going to use THAT?!”

This is such a coincidence….I read the SAME issue of Elle and had to have those glasses. I’ve honestly never ordered anything from a magazine before but really loved the color and vintage look of the glasses, so I placed an order on-line (about 18 months ago, I think? Same month as the Elle decor issue).

A few weeks passed by and I didn’t receive the glasses, so I called the store in New York regarding my order. As it turns out, the Marston Laginger store in New York which sold consumer goods closed just after I placed the order and my order was sort of orphaned. The sales rep on the phone asked if I still wanted the glasses and I said yes, so they shipped them from their store in England.

So, I didn’t get the better price from World Market but am happy to have the glasses after all! They go perfectly with a set of Frankoma Pottery dishes our Grandmother passed onto us :)

What a fantastic find! Like you, I also bargain hunt like it’s my job. I’ve been looking for a nice little armchair for my new apartment’s bedroom since February (only 1.5 more months until move-in!) and I just kept coming back to this chair at Target:

    http://www.target.com/Metropolitan-Lounger-Chair-Chocolate/dp/B000ETNPFO/ref=br_1_4?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=14205981&node=14205981&sr=1-4&searchRank=price&searchPage=4&searchSize=30&id=Metropolitan%20Lounger%20Chair%20Chocolate&qid=

Then, just last week, I was browsing Meijer’s website and found this:

    http://www.meijer.com/s/petite-microfiber-chair-mocha/_/R-40191

Strikingly similar, no? And how about that $78.00 difference? Not to mention my monthly 20% coupon from Meijer that will bring that chair down to around $153.99!

Those glasses are so pretty — and seemingly even prettier when you use them all the time! I love it.

Speaking of hunting down a deal, hubs and I wanted a farmhouse table for our new place — we’ve had a fancier table and chairs we got from an estate sale and yard sale and pieced together — but now, with a four year old and a move, it was the time to change things up and get something sturdier (doesn’t hurt that I found your blog and am making some design changes in the new place as well, thanks YHL!).

After pricing out “real” farmhouse tables (yikes!) I saw some of the styles online at World Market. Much better price than an artisan one, but I was determined to get them on sale. We don’t have a World Market around us in NJ so I decided to wait for the WM friends and family sale and use whatever coupon I could find to help with the shipping.

Then I had a light-bulb moment! I searched craigslist for the nearest geographic area that had a World Market — Virginia — thinking someone might be selling it, and there was the exact table we wanted, with the chairs and the bench!

Drove down to DC and bought them — all because I found them through a craigslist ad and I was willing to drive. ;) Got the large 8 ft farm table, PLUS the chairs PLUS the bench that go with it, for $700 — a fraction of what it would have cost retail.

And as an added bonus, I made sure to stop in at World Market while I was down there as part of the adventure — loved the shop and am so happy to have the set I want at a price that even their sale and coupons couldn’t have beat!

I found one called Falling Leaves on Overstock that had a similar feel, and a much smaller pice tag – $51.99 for the king size reversible cover and two king size shams. Now that’s a deal! :)

That’s so interesting! Quite a mark-up overseas, huh? Come visit and pack your bag full of World Market glasses!

I saw those at World Market too! I wanted to buy them but didn’t, b/c I figured it won’t be long before we break all the ones we have now (we break one every couple months I think) so then I’ll have a good excuse to get them. :)

My great deal just happened yesterday. I was at the St. Vincent de Paul store (like a thrift shop) and found 2 prints by my favorite artist an 11×16 and an 8×10 for just $3.99 and $2.49 respectively!! The bonus was they they were both framed and double matted already! What a steal because the regular price for each woud have easily been 8 or 10 times that- without the frames and matting!

    Love ’em!

This cracks me up, because when I was in Richmond visiting a friend year before last, she took me to World Market and I TOO found a set of blue and green cups I couldn’t live without because the price was so great! Mine were some kind of thick, frosted looking plastic, so they are great for taking outside. They are about my favorite cups, though, so I certainly don’t save them for BBQs.

I can’t say that I’ve been that lucky to find such a great deal on something that I’ve wanted. But, I did want to say that I have a binder full of magazine clippings as well, only mine contains a mish-mosh of recipes, tips, holiday decorating ideas, etc. I may need to add a new tab for room inspirations after reading this post!
