Reader Redesign: Row Row Row Your Walls

When Jamie sent us photos of her stunningly posh striped walls (inspired by our bathroom painting project) we had to share the amazing transformation. Here’s her letter:

Just wanted to tell you “THANK YOU” and give you a big cyber-hug for inspiring me to get off my duff and add some “oomph” to my house. After seeing your altogether fabulous bathroom stripes, I’ve gone stripe-wild in my own house and it’s made all the difference. I did stripes in my bathroom – much like yours – then kept the love going by adding them to my master bedroom as well. Talk about textural eye candy! I just love them, and I love you for all of your fabulous ideas, your prompt responses to emails and comments, and the free advice you so generously bestow on your faithful readers. I’m doing my utmost to return the love by giving you shout outs on my blog as much as possible. I’ve got a large portion of the Salt Lake valley following your every move so I think I’m doing a good job. Let’s be honest, what’s not to love? In short: I’m pretty freaking exciting about my stripes!!! Love you both! -Jamie

Here’s the already lovely bedroom before Operation Stripe Happy:

Striped Bedroom Before

And here it is after Jamie’s mission was accomplished…

Striped Bedroom After1

… and her bathroom walls got in on the fun.

Striped Bathroom After

Aren’t these chic stripes gorgeous in both the bathroom and the feature wall behind the bed? Love. Love. Love. Thanks so much for sending the amazing photos our way Jamie! What do you guys think? Isn’t it amazing what a gallon of paint a little painters tape can do? Gotta love how cheap this project is- and how much bang you get for your buck.

Psst: Itching for a step by step stripe painting tutorial? Look no further than this play by play.

Youngsters, I LOVE reader transformations, and have been wondering if you have/have been thinking of making a section of the site for the "after" of houses you sell moodboards to…or is there not many "after" pics? you'd think people would be more than happy to share your transformations of their rooms. As you can probably tell, my site favourite is the House Crashing. Love!

You can be assured that THIS TECHNIQUE, “WILL” be in our new home……..or maybe even in the rental, if it takes too long to get our own home. LOL LOVE IT!!! Keep the great creative juices flowing YHL. ;-)

Yay! Happy day that I’m on YHL! I’m glad people are digging the stripes. Like I said, the Youngsters get all the cred.

    Here are my paint colors:
Bedroom – the entire room is painted in Behr’s Castle Path (730C-3), then I did the stripe one shade darker in Behr’s Garden Wall (730D-4).

Bathroom stripes – Sherwin-William’s Relaxed Khaki (SW 6150).

I love the lamps too (is that so vain?)! I actually got them for a steal at TJ Maxx Home Goods. They were each $22.99!

Thanks again for the inspiration, Youngsters!

Oooh this is inspiring me even more to do the same thing to my living room! I’m starting from scratch, Youngsters, would you suggest I mark the areas, roughly paint THEN add painters tape for the stripes? i.e., I just moved into a new place and the walls have no paint, doesn’t seem to make sense to paint the entire wall first, then do the stripes — does it?

The stripes do look great. Something funny happened regarding stripes and YHL just recently. My friend, Mindy, told me she’d decided to paint her guest room with stripes, and I immediately thought of your bathroom stripes. When I finally got around to emailing her your link, she emailed me right back and said it was your bathroom that was her inspiration! She’d done a Google search. Too funny!

Question for you both: In the bathroom striping projects, how did you get behind the toilet and the sink?

    Reply
    • Avatar for YoungHouseLoveYoungHouseLove says

      September 10, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Sara- We’re actually huge fans of this short handled brush that lets you get behind things like the toilet and the sink with ease. It took some bending and a bit more time but the look is seamless. Hope it helps!

Dana- Love the idea of a striped TV wall. Just like the accent wall in Jamie’s lovely bedroom, it’ll look posh and polished and really fill things out around the rectangular TV (which is very similar to Jamie’s headboard, so you can almost picture it already…). Hope it helps!

What a great makeover! The stripes really look fantastic!

I will say though as a PSA, if you’re looking to buy a house and come across striped walls, just be aware that they can be a pain to paint over, and sometimes end up showing through primer and a re-paint! We eventually had to sand some completely down!

Hopefully though, these stripes are so gorgeous that any future owners would want to keep them anyway!

Sherry, what do you think about a striped TV wall? We have one large wall in our family room on which our 52″ flatscreen TV is mounted. So far, that’s the only thing on the wall. Thought about adding a large black & white framed photo on each side of the TV and striping the entire wall. This wall is visible across the house to the kitchen (open floor plan) so thought maybe the stripes would help bring the wall in some??? It’s a very long, large room. I’d appreciate your expertise! I’ve also been wanting to add stripes since you shared your tutorial.

Kelly, I actually got the idea from a picture I saw in a Pottery Barn store, however, their frames were a little too pricey for me. I found similar ones at Bed, Bath & Beyond. They are shown as wedding frames go guests can sign the matte. But, I obviously didn’t use them for that. I think they were around $30/each. I’ve also flipped the matte over for a less bright-white look and loved that as well.
    Hope it helps!
