Reader Redesign: One Hot Kitchen

This kitchen overhaul is as delicious as fresh baked bread. Here’s Bridgette’s letter:

I love following your blog and all the inspiring ideas! We are on step two of three for our remodel of our kitchen- we still have to install crème subway tile for the backsplash, put on the cupboard knobs, and accessorize the kitchen… BUT the bulk is done! And we are loving how it’s turning out. Here are a few of our sources for your fabulous and curious readers:

  • Granite: Santa Cecilia
  • Island color: Mesa G21 (used Valspar paint)
  • Cabinet color: ask your paint expert at the store to mix the blackest of black and then start with a tinted primer (used Valspar paint)
  • Faucet: Price Pfister- Tuscan Bronze (Lowe’s)
  • Lighting above island: Portfolio 1-Light Mini Pendant Bronze finishes (Lowe’s)
  • Stools: Scoop stool, black (Target)
  • Flooring: Tundra Laminate (IKEA)

Cheers & happy spring! -Bridgette

You can check out more details about Bridgette’s fantastic kitchen makeover (and to see her amazing dining room transformation) over on her blog. Thanks so much for sending the fabulous eye candy our way, Bridgette! Those black cabinets are super classic and really make all the difference. And of course we love your thrifty shopping sources (Target, Ikea, and Lowe’s are three of our favorite places too). Hip hip hooray for affordable overhauls!

This is great timing – I’m about to start painting our cabinets black and I’ve been wondering how it will look in a ‘normal’ kitchen versus the designer kitchen pics I’ve been using for inspiration.

It looks fabulous – great transformation!

Did they build the island themselves? We are thinking of building an island from Ikea cabinets, but we are not sure that it would work with a granite top.

Love your blog, laughed my head off with the DWTS photo, and I am voting every day! Good luck!

I LOVE black cabinets. Strange little fact, I always thought they would be amazing but hadn’t seen much proof and it wasn’t until I saw an episode on “Tori & Dean Inn Love” where they showed the house renovations in the last season that I realized my dream of black cabinet would be an absolute must when I buy my first place. Great kitchen re-do!

I love what they have done with their kitchen and dining room. I have just purchased my first home and it needs a LOT of work. What do they think I should expect for under $20,000??? I was wondering what color they painted their new kitchen. I think it goes perfectly with the color of the cabinets and would like to model my own kitchen after it. Thanks, Heather

      Hey Heather,

For 20K you should get one smokin’ kitchen and dining room. Definitely be sure to get multiple estimates and do some shopping on ebay for fixtures and accessories, but you should have no problem completely making over those two rooms on that budget. As for the paint color info, hopefully Bridgette will drop in and answer any questions you have on that wall color. Happy renovating!

      xoxo,
      Sherry

I know everyone has said this already, but i LOVE the black Cabi’s. The granite tops are really amazing!

One thing i would add is some colour, some red chillies in a stylishly shaped glass jar with aluminium decor.
    Love the post.

What is better to use when painting our kitchen cabinets, semi gloss or satin finish? We are painting them black as well!
