A Bedroom Makeover Done With A Mood Board

When Phuong and her husband Jeff sent over their Design Dilemma after pictures we couldn’t wait to share the goods. We know that many of you are chomping at the bit to see how our mood boards turn out (believe me, we are too) so we’re always thrilled to see how those spaces transform after each homeowner gets down to business. You may remember that we whipped up this custom mood board for Phuong and Jeff a while back when they came to us for help turning their bare and basic bedroom into an inviting and cozy place to unwind after a long day. Here are the before pictures to refresh your memory:

And here’s the mood board that we created to add a splash of color and some crisp and modern layered interest for ambiance to spare (see more mood board details here).

And now for Phuong and Jeff’s after pics. Here’s their newly spruced bedroom thanks to some colorful and textural accessories (which really amp up the formerly brown on beige space):

Didn’t they do a fantastic job in there? The room is so much cozier and more inviting thanks to everything from those fun striped slipper chairs to the large abstract art print that they hung across from the window. We love the pops of aqua and amber along with the added texture and interest that things like the area rug and the curtains introduce to the room- and even the smaller upgrades like the blue faux coral on the tall chest across from the bed (or those pretty mirrors placed behind each night table to bounce around more light) make the entire space feel polished and special. And here’s what Phuong and Jeff had to say about their big bedroom makeover:

What can we say? We LOVE it! We ordered nearly every single item that you recommended and everything came together very easily (sorry it took us so long to send the after photos to you). The room looks great and we are very happy! Thanks so much for the awesome mood board… we’ll be back again for more help! -Phuong & Jeff

No thank YOU Phuong and Jeff, for sending us your room update (we get positively giddy whenever they turn up in our inbox). Didn’t they do an amazing job bringing that mood board to life? It looks so warm and yet so modern at the same time- and we love that the mix of their gorgeous high-end existing furniture blends right in with affordable slipper chairs and curtains that we hunted down from Target along with the on-sale decorative accents and pillows (in the $20 range!) that we found at places like ZGallerie, Crate & Barrel and CB2. So let’s all shower Phuong and Jeff with praise for being so wonderful and sending us their pretty after pics. And here’s hoping more Design Dilemma after photos will be landing in our inbox very soon…

Update: We sadly can no longer find the time to take on client commissioned mood boards (and just whip up general inspiration boards instead) but if we ever reinstate them we’ll make a big announcement!

It is amazing to see your mood board come completely to life like that – great job everybody! It looks like they have a flat screen TV on one wall – does it swing out so they can watch TV in bed? Otherwise, it seems like an odd place to have the TV…

Yup, it swings out so they can watch it from bed. It was actually in their room before the mood board makeover so we just worked to keep the focus on the rest of the space so it blended right in. Hope it helps!

The mirrors behind the lamps are pure genius! It looks great.

Where did they get their bed? I’ve been on the hunt for a modern-looking upholstered bed that’s complete with a footboard. The Colette bed from Crate and Barrel would be perfect, if only it had a footboard! Any suggestions?

      Hey JenWoodhouse,

You might get to see where they got their bed by clicking over to the original mood board post (linked above). Hope it helps! And as for a modern upholstered bed with a footboard, have you tried roomandboard.com? They have lots of great stuff. Also maybe zgallerie.com and ballarddesigns.com. Hope it helps!

Oh, to have all that space. The blue coral is a sharp contrast to their very modern, tailored furniture and gives the room some energy. Thanks YHL for an inspiring mood board!

Just a quick note about Alli’s post… There are plates available to put behind your new handles that will hide the old holes in your furniture. Of course, it depends on the style of handle you choose as to whether or not they’ll look good, but it’s worth a look!
Oh, and as always, Youngsters, fantastic work. Phoung and Jeff, your room ROCKS!

I absolutely love the mirrors behind the nightstand lamps! I might have to try that, but I already have two other mirrors in my bedroom (one is fairly large over my low dresser). Would adding ones over my nightstands be a little bit over-kill?

It could look really glam and airy so we definitely think you should get two mirrors and at least lean them up to see how they look (you can always return them if you don’t like the effect but we’re betting you will). Hope it helps!

Thank you everyone for your comments! We absolutely love our new room. (and so does our your son!). To answer some of the questions in the comments:

    – The armoire/tall drawers are from Baronet
    – The bed is from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams
    – The TV does swing out – we mounted the LCD using the Sanus LR1A In-Wall Box and the Sanus VM400 articulating arm

Question on Mirrors Behind Nightstand: any suggestions on choosing the finish for the mirror? In this room transformation you used a silver frame and it looks gorgeous behind those lamps and with the color scheme. and it coordinates well with the pillows, chairs, accent piece on the wall. Similar to the question about different finishes on furniture in your post this morning — does a mirror’s finish need to echo another finish in the room or can silver/nickel add that note of glam to almost any room, even if the picture frames are white on the wall, as well as the nightstands and lamps!

We’ve never been matchy-matchy folks, so you can definitely go with a different finish for the frame of your mirror than other frames in the room. Just be sure the finish you choose occurs a few more times in the space (like in the curtain rods or the door hardware) and it’ll look great. Good luck!

I normally love these, but I can’t get past the chairs on this one. They look like they’d be quite uncomfortable, and kind of floating in the middle of the room? Would you ever sit on them? And why? I’m honestly interested to know…

I love the mirror by the nightstand idea. I would have never thought of that. It really makes a statement but you don’t see it right away. I love things like that where you can’t put your finger on it right away.

Hi Ally S – Yes, we use the chairs often. We were honestly a little wary about the scale and quality (being from target and because Jeff is 6’6″ and usually needs sturdy furniture) but we were very pleasntly suprised. They are comfortable and are very solid. They are located within the “sitting nook” and not in the middle of the room – so the flow of the room is not disrupted.

We use them for for reading and relaxing, when we want to get away (hide from guests ;) ), and also they work well when one of us is sleeping and the other wants to read or use the computer. We are on the look out for a side table that fits between the chairs. Any suggestions?

      Hey Phuong & Jeff,

So glad they’re working for you! We love our Target bedroom chair for stacking our bed pillows on before going to sleep (instead of throwing them on the floor). Bedroom chairs always seem to be handy for something. And as for a side table, Target actually has some great clean-lined side tables for under $100 (like this: http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/mobile.jsp?title=product_detail&asin=B001K2GNMQ ) so it’s definitely worth a look. We also love places like JC Penney, West Elm and World Market. Hope it helps!

    Hey S & J!

I would love to get my hands on the glass vases you 2 have on your living room coffee table, console table, & bedroom floor. I don’t believe ZGallerie has them on their website.
Do you know if there are any similar ones out there?
    Thank you!

I absolutely love the transformation and especially the rich looking curtains! Phuong are they different from the ones on the moodboard? The Target link isn’t working and the top of them look different anyways. I would love to know where you got them, if you don’t mind. And do they block light well? I’m definitely in the market for some new ones for our bedroom!

    Thanks

Hi Lissa – the curtains are ones that we purchased several years ago from Restoration Hardware (they just happened to work with the mood board). They can be found here: http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod170234&navAction=jump

    We have the color ‘goldenrod’.
