When The Thing You Really Want Sells Out

I was going to do it. I was finally going to buy the Coco mirror from West Elm that I’ve been obsessing over forever. Yes, we’re moving, but it’s such a classic piece that it could be hung anywhere in this house or the next one. And I was just gonna go for it- all $199 of it. Even though I’m usually too cheap to buy things full price (even if I’m head over heels in love) I had this whole talk with myself about putting on my big girl pants and bucking up and just splurging for something that I’m 99.9% certain would make me happy for decades. Then I saw this when I clicked the link.

Coco Mirror

No longer available? I want to die.

That sucks! The same thing happened to me with the Waterloo bedding from
Anthropologie. Except to my dismay, I found out the the bedding had been discounted by 40% right before it was unavailable. I called everywhere to find it and I still check eBay (even though this happened over a year ago!) I stillndteam about that bedding- it was too beautiful to forget. Ahhhh.

Hey YHL…not sure if anyone else posted this or not, but I thought I’d mention that I found it here too: http://www.ochre.net/en/display.product.php?accessoriesID=accessories&productID=a14

Maybe you could contact them about ordering? Just a thought. :)

Call the store in Memphis and have it shipped to you. This happened to me with Crate and Barrel and a vase. (I am so cheap I won’t buy a $15 vase I love.) I don’t have a C & B closer than 3 hours away (I know, its sadness.) so I went online to order it and…. gone. I live chatted a rep and he found a store that had all 3 vases I wanted and I called and they shipped them to me. :)
    I love happy endings.
Well except now I can’t find the perfect bedding for the bedroom where the vases will go….
I hope you get your mirror!

ugh, i haaaate it when that happens!! that always seems to happen to me at tj.maxx. i see something i like, but decided to “think on it”… get home, obsess about it for a few days, convince myself i have to have it, get all psyched up about what i’m going to do with it, go back to the store, and sure enough it’s gone. lately i’ve learned to just buy the item if i’m at all interested and do the “thinking on it” at home while it’s safely in my possession, then simply return it if i decide against it. (although 9 times outta 10 i just end up keeping it so i’m not so sure if this is really a good solution or not). anywho, i feel your pain sistah.

I feel your pain. This has happened to me soo many times with West Elm and Pottery Barn. I would take the suggestion Carrie mentiomed. I had a friend who did the same thing with cushions she wanted. They found them at another store and shipped them to her. Definately worth a try if you have your heart set on it.

After a week i opened website again and guess what my jacket or rather “my navy jacket” was sold out! i was so mad at myself that i dind’t buy it…. I was still thinking about it and one day i went with my mom to Marshall’s and I found my NAVY JACKET for only 20$, now i can wait for winter! and until i’m going to wear it!

Argh! Don’t you hate when that happens?

Boy, do I know the feeling!

I am STILL pining over the Teresita candle wall panels that Crate and Barrel carried for a long time — but not long enough for me to finally get around to buying them.

I was planning to buy three to put up on the wall behind my dining table, to help define that area of the long dining/living room. I phoned Customer Service but no luck, and have looked high and low for something similar, but not found anything I like nearly as much for the price, despite having some keyword alerts logged on ebay.

I wish retailers would warn folks before they discontinue a piece — Couldn’t they splash a warning over their catalog entries and Web pages reading something like “limited availability”? It probably would have gotten me off my butt and they would’ve had another sale. Ditto for Pottery Barn’s Verona floor lamp, heh! But especially those Teresita wall panels. Dang!

Let’s start a letter writing campaign to have West Elm bring back our faves!

Sherry, You should call customer service. They usually are not completely out of stock, just not enough inventory to keep on the website. I had this happen with a fountain I was obsessed with from RedEnvelope. I called, talked to a very nice customer service person who looked up the SKU and found they had 5 left in inventory! Good luck:)

      Hey Shelly,

I actually gave them a call this morning. Looks like they’re all out except for the outlets, who seem to have a few semi-damaged ones (and who will only ship with the disclaimer that if they break during shipping they’re non-returnable or refundable). Oh well, wasn’t meant to be. Maybe we’ll DIY one someday…

Check back! You never know – I had my eye on a way too expensive JCrew Crew Cuts dress for my oldest daughter. I finally decided to get it when it went down below $100. Then it was sold out of her size. I almost bawled my eyes out. I kept checking back to look at it – over a month or two – and low and behold – HER SIZE was in stock AND it was on sale a bit more! I did the happy dance and couldn’t buy it fast enough!

Her dress was that mirror in dress form! Same color, same classic styling, with a little soft edge.

    Good luck!

    Hi!
Why don’t you look on ebay? I did that when they stopped selling their round shell capiz chandelier (same one you guys have in your master) and I wanted it for my daughter nursery. I found it on ebay from someone who snatched it up when it was on sale. I bet if you save your search for it it will eventually pop up on there. Just a thought from my past experience. :)) Love your guys’ blog btw, it’s the first blog that really got me into reading blogs! Love your style.

I am a very thrifty shopper. I was hitting the GW and other thrift stores before it became popular. HOWEVER. There are times when you know in your heart of hearts that some item is the one that you must have. If you make do most of the time, you need to get those pieces that you will treasure forever. I have a piece of art that I spent almost $100 over 35 years ago, a fortune when I first got married. The ex-husband is gone but the art still has a prominent spot in my home. If you will love it every time you look at it, then you should buy it. Perhaps it will turn up somewhere else, but if it doesn’t, it was a lesson for the future. Oh, by the way, I have just splurged on a handbag for myself. Usually, I have GW or thrift store bags, but this one I ordered is one I will love until it is in shreds.

Keep your eye on ebay, and start calling all the brick and mortar stores and have them ship one to you. OR, just put it down to the universe telling you you’ll find something better.

Just writing to commiserate. This is the story of my life. It’s gotten so ridiculous that we just laugh about it now (although it still stings, each time). In fact, we have a joke about how the surest way for a company to sell out of an item is to convince me to purchase it…

We’re just gonna take the “meant to be approach” so we plan to swing by an outlet that’s about 2 hours away in a few weeks when we’re visiting John’s parents (it’s out near them) and if they still have one there that’s in decent shape we’ll scream “meant to be!” and snatch that baby up!

You could totally make this. The first thing that comes to mind is using spray painted palm strips, you know the ones us good old Catholics collect on Palm Sunday (unblessed of course). Unfortunately you can probably only order them during Lent. They would provide some of the rigidness but you could also coat them in something like mod podge or hair spray for additional stiffness.

That sort of thing has definitely happened to me…I see something and then think about it all the time but don’t have the guts to buy it for one reason or another.. then when I finally decide to go for it, I look for it and it’s gone! Probably just means that something even better will come along eventually. Or who knows, you may round a corner somewhere one day and there will be one sitting there for half the price!

I usually just read and not comment (over the last year) but this ALWAYS happens to me. It’s a common joke in our house that I have a knack for falling in love with things that become obsolete before I can take the plunge.

Just today I managed to sneak by – was thinking about a diaper bag (“the” diaper bag purchase I’ve been debating over online for a month and checking sales because I don’t want to pay that much for a silly bag) and saw it in the store. Last one. No more. whew. Sometimes if you fall in love with something you should just suck it up and go for it!
