Finally! Some Book Project Sneak Peeks…

One of the things our publisher does is have each of their authors create a short video about their book. A movie trailer of sorts – but for a book.

Artisan suggested we hire a little film/editing crew to do it, but like true DIYers we took it as a fun challenge to see how much we could do ourselves. So we came up with an outline, wrote a little script, hired a local video genius to shoot it for us (who also happens to be our brother in law) and edited it ourselves in Final Cut Pro back in March. And now that we’re two months away from the official book release date (Nov 6th, aka Election Day) we’re finally allowed to share it! Wahoo.

We had to finish the video so early because our publisher needed it for a spring sales conference in March, so as soon as we got back from Hawaii the pressure was on (see how bare the trees are in this pic?). Thankfully all of the projects were already finished for when we shot all of the book photography over three weeks at our house in February, so one day of shooting video and setting up little impromptu vignettes wasn’t too tricky. It was actually really fun.

The funniest thing is that we handed in our outline for all of the projects in the book about a year before this video was shot, so finally seeing the projects in real life in a polished format like this (since it was well before we saw any final book proofs) was kind of surreal. I guess it’s akin to baking a cake for a year or two and finally getting to taste it.

The weirdest part by far was recording our nerdy little voice over (while sitting in a closet using our iPhones) and layering that in there. Allow us to share this reenactment so you can picture it (Burger was playing the role of “Supervisor”):

We’re so relieved to finally be able to reveal some of the projects in the book – even if it’s only a small portion for now. Thankfully in less than two months the book will be out (you can pre order it here) so all those kitties will be out of the bag. Can’t wait! Free the kitties!

Have you guys ever written a video script and attempted to make a somewhat polished little YouTube ditty? It’s kinda fun, right? The clothesline concept was all John’s – and we love how it allowed us to squeeze in a few bonus project peeks. I’d say previewing 15 projects in a little over a minute is pretty speedy, indeed. You know we like to cram stuff in there (slash are terrible secret keepers). Woot!

    I clicked on your site to see the post after a very, very challenging phone call with a beloved relative (who was the messenger). It was JUST what I needed to de-steam from the message (again, I love the messenger..).

    Fortunately, moments after I watched it, my hub called and in the midst of some venting I said, “oh, but the best part was.. that John and Sherry have a GREAT video up.. it’s really well done and might help with a project of yours for school!” He laughed!

    I’m so excited for the book release. It will actually be on my Christmas list this year. Unless of course you’ll be touring near me then I’ll come in and get a signed copy! I am gonna skip reading this post because I truly want it to all be a surprise when I finally do get the book! Congrats again on this accomplishment.

    OMG… CUTE!!!

    My husband told me I put the “stalker” in blog stalker when I cheered at the kiss at the end.

    But all creepiness aside, I am totally psyched for the book now! We closed on a new/old house in August and your book will be the first on the coffee table. In fact we will probably get it before the coffee table. :D Our house was majorly updated… in the 70s. So we have much shag carpet, faux wood paneling, and fuzzy wallpaper to overcome. We need all the inspiration we can get! Since even the video made me want to get up and paint something, I am sure the book will be even better.

    Although, seeing that I got sucked in even from that small video, I am surprised networks aren’t throwing money and first born children at you in an attempt to get you to rethink your television career. You guys rocked it!

    This video caused me to immediately hop over to Amazon and pre-order. I’m hoping some ideas will help inspire the nursery I need to create for a new baby that’s on the way. I’m having serious inspiration issues. It could just be that my two-year old doesn’t give me time to be creative :)

    Are you guys starstruck at all by all of this??? I AM…

    the last time I commented and Sherry commented on my comment, I called my mom, made her log on, and said…. “OMG $herdog responded RIGHT TO ME…” and then I followed this with, “you know they have a book ‘dropping’ in November….” I could tell over the phone she was shaking her head at me, then I added…. ” remember they were on Nate Berkey (as I lovingly call him) last October (I still have the episode DVR”d)… and finally she said… “are these friends of yours???” … to which I responded… “I like to think they are!!!”

    THANKS for being the best part of the internet, for me, in all my chaos-crazy-working-mom-life…logging on daily to just see what’s new gives me a daily escape while sipping my coffee…

    and now a book to relish. ahhhh….. can’t wait to call my mom and tell her… “guess what, I BOUGHT MY FRIEND’S BOOK!!”

    And I’m very impressed with your promo video…
    I’m a video producer/director, and often have clients that want to do their own videos {picture me cringing!}
    If only they came out as great as yours, my life would be so much easier!
    But I’m not surprised, you guys always go above & beyond- so professional on all fronts!

    AHHH! So great! It thrills me when people go a bit against the flow to make sure their personalities and quirks still shine through. Thank you for being willing to be yourselves…and not care what anyone thinks! That’s just as inspiring and brave as your DIY abilities and I love it!

    P.S. Pretty sure my husband pre-ordered your book for my birthday! My birthday is at the end of October…so I’m all for extending the celebration into the beginning of November! :)

    Is it odd that I feel so darned proud of you two? I feel like I’ve known you forever and we’ve never even met, I been reading every week for more than four years though.
