Yes, this freebie is about cleaning, but the “nice” part of my post title risks being a major understatement. For instance, would you call this incredible Australian house that we virtually crashed back in February just “nice?”
Of course not. It’s amazing. Which is why we’re excited that those very homeowners are also the geniuses behind the luxurious and superbly eco-friendly cleaning line called Murchison-Hume. Even more excitingly, they’re sending over $250 worth of luxe home-cleaning products to one lucky reader’s casa (feel free to drool, since you’ll soon have something to clean it up with).
So why do we love Murchison-Hume? Let’s start with the design: vintage apothecary-style bottles that make any countertop photo-shoot ready. Then there’s the eco part. All products are premium organic and are based in the same technology that cleans up oil spills, meaning they’re completely non-toxic. Oh, and of course there’s the fact that they actually work – and smell great (mmm, Australian White Grapefruit). And yes this line (which you can find stateside in Anthropologie and in upscale shelter mags like Elle Decor) is pricier than your average cleaner, but you certainly get what you pay for. Plus, it never hurts to feel a bit fancy when you’re tidying up. In fact they sent some our way and we’ve never felt so elegant while getting our scrub on. I can live with a bit of a mess, except in the kitchen. I’m anal about cleaning up AS a cook, and can’t handle it if there are still dirty dishes/pots/pans etc. out the next morning. Food grime is so much worse than clutter, dust, or messy clothes!

If you asked my husband, he would say I’m a freak about keeping a clean house – I would say my cleaning list consists of general maintenance. Clutter drives me crazy, as long as the clutter is under control, I can relax a little bit. I do like a clean counter and a vacuumed floor makes me happy! :)

Our kitchen counter is white tile with white grout (and I’d like to have a talk with whoever thought that was a good idea). We’re saving to replace it, but it’s in good shape… partly because I clean the grout obsessively. Toothbrush, grout brush, Magic Eraser – anything to keep the grout ungrody.

I’ll admit, I’m not a clean freak.. quite the opposite in fact. I’m more bothered by actual clutter than the state of cleanliness. I’ll clean when I see telltale signs of needing it…i.e. dust, grime and hairballs

I obsess over the house smelling like a dog! I have 3 boxers, while none of them are really messy, you get 3 of them in one house and well, the smells combine! Vinegar is my favorite smell buster!

I don’t know how beneficial this stuff is after constant use, but I started using hand-sanitizer all the time last winter post-swine flu mania. Bath and Body Works makes one with lotion that’s great since it doesn’t dry out your hands.

This is really, really strange, but I love cleaning the bathroom. Fresh-smelling, not a stray hair on the coutnertops, no toothpaste spray on the mirror…love it. There, I said it! But really, I can do it in 10 minutes, tops, including deep-cleaning the shower and the floor. The joys of a small house!

. . .and I do keep my floors clean. For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to tile my entry hall with off-white tile. This has turned out to be a HUGE mistake, especially with a two-year-old boy and another baby on the way. But, I made my bed so I am obsessive about keeping that off-white tile clean and I dream about a day when I’m able to replace it (or move out of the house!).
