Yes, this freebie is about cleaning, but the “nice” part of my post title risks being a major understatement. For instance, would you call this incredible Australian house that we virtually crashed back in February just “nice?”
Of course not. It’s amazing. Which is why we’re excited that those very homeowners are also the geniuses behind the luxurious and superbly eco-friendly cleaning line called Murchison-Hume. Even more excitingly, they’re sending over $250 worth of luxe home-cleaning products to one lucky reader’s casa (feel free to drool, since you’ll soon have something to clean it up with).
So why do we love Murchison-Hume? Let’s start with the design: vintage apothecary-style bottles that make any countertop photo-shoot ready. Then there’s the eco part. All products are premium organic and are based in the same technology that cleans up oil spills, meaning they’re completely non-toxic. Oh, and of course there’s the fact that they actually work – and smell great (mmm, Australian White Grapefruit). And yes this line (which you can find stateside in Anthropologie and in upscale shelter mags like Elle Decor) is pricier than your average cleaner, but you certainly get what you pay for. I am obsessive about having a clean kitchen. I cannot handle dishes in the sink or crumbs on the counter. I have to clean the counters, stove top, and wipe down the appliances every night before bed!

I’m weird about anything (anywhere) being out of place. The family room could be totally spotless, but I wouldn’t be able to consider it “clean” if there anything out of place — like my daughter’s toys on the floor, my husband’s keys or cell phone on the side table, etc. My brain just can’t get around the fact that if it doesn’t go there, it shouldn’t be there.

My wife gets a kick out of this: I like to organize our paper recycling into tidy stacks — one for smaller items and one for larger items. Then I find non-corrugated cardboard boxes (that also need to be recycled… like cereal boxes of the right size) to put the stacks in, or I put them (tidily) in a paper bag. Feels so right.

I can’t say I’m obsessive about cleaning, it too often falls by the wayside. I do, however feel quite fanatical about towels. Ever go to someone’s house and their hand towels smell like they sat in the washer for too long, and now smell like the underside of a wet dog? It’s disgusting. So, there you have it. I won’t abide by a dirty towel. Blech.

I have a hard time with clutter, and with a son who’s 18 months old, our place is FULL of extra stuff. We have found, though, that, in addition to his toy box, that he LOVES having his own drawer in our t.v. stand (while everything else is baby-proofed). Plus, we like to keep a couple of baskets full of books and toys in other rooms of the house so that there’s always something for him to do, but also so that the clutter stays in relatively confined spaces.
