Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

Oh please oh please fabric me! :) This would be an amazing win, I love sewing and always need (okay fine, WANT) more fabric.

I’m named after my mom’s mom, Margaret — my parents were going to name me Margaret but call me Meg, then decided to just go ahead and actually name me Meg/Megan.

FABRIC ME! My name means wisdom, which I’ve always sort of liked … and my last name means keeper of the flock. So that is me: wise shepherdess. :)

My name is a favorite of my parents, they liked that by going with Alex I could always pretend to be a boy on my resumes!

They almost named me Dakota though, years before Dakota Fanning made it cool. To think I could have started the trend!

I was born on the day that Robert Kennedy died 06/06/1968 – my Mom and Dad had agreed that if I was a girl they would name me Michelle. After Robert was shot and died just before I was born my Dad begged my Mom to name me Bobbie- I don’t understand the next part but Eugene McCarthy was running against him or something and the name Jean was added to my name. I’m fine with Bobbie it suits me.

My parents narrowed their name choices down to three. When my older sister came to see me for the first time (she was 3), she got to choose off the list. I don’t know what the other two were, but I know my name would have been Dustin if I was a boy. In fact, all my sisters would have been Dustin…but alas, all girls. :)

Not much meaning behind my name. My parents made lists of names they liked, and Kelsey happened to be on both their lists. Sounds easy compared to the agonizing my husband and I did over our son’s name!

FABRIC ME! I think my name’s translation is victory of the people, although I doubt my parents had that in mind when naming me. I’m not sure how they settled on Nicole, but being born exactly 1 week before x-mas, they were very close to naming me Noel. I think I dodged a bullet on that one.

My parents chose Julie for me since it means “youthful one”. Right after I was born I was very awake and active so they went with Julie over their other choices. I have always loved that story, and now that I’m pregnant with my first daughter can’t wait to see what kind of personality she has!

I don’t believe there is a special story behind my name aside from the fact that my parents wanted a name that couldn’t easily be shortened to a nickname.

I think my mom got the idea from Natalie Wood whose daughter’s name is Courtney Brooke Wagner – my younger sister’s name is Brooke. :)

My name is Jaclyn and my brother and sister’s babysitter at the time was named Jaclyn (Jackie), so when asked what they should name they said “JACKIE”. My dad picked the spelling bc he loved Jaclyn Smith (and he didn’t want me to get confused when learning to spell my name in kindergarten with the q-u-e way of spelling it).

I love my name, but when I was in 3rd grade, we had to do a report on the meaning of our name. I couldn’t find any baby books with my name, so I resorted to the dictionary and the male spelling of Randy.

I was so horrified that I cried and my teacher didn’t make me give the report.

    But really, I love it!

As for my name, it means “blind” or “musical” depending on the source. Obviously, I’d go with musical, even though I can’t sing or play anything. I am a record junkie though.

My mom just heard the name and liked it. My folks hadn’t picked out a boy name before my mom went in to labor (and they didn’t know what I would be), so I guess it was meant to be.
