Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! My parent’s named me Christa just because they liked it. However, they very nearly named me Kelley Ann, because my dad’s middle name is Kelley and my mom’s middle name is Ann. The only reason they didn’t is because they couldn’t agree on the spelling of Kelley/Kelly. Kelley was my grandad’s mother’s maiden name, but my mom didn’t want people spelling it wrong by assuming it was Kelly my whole life. And…! It’s a good thing they didn’t, because as it turned out – my husband’s sister’s name is Kelly Ann! Hahaha…close call :-)

My name was picked out of a hat since there were a few options that my parents liked and they couldn’t decide on.

My name, Kate comes from Greek “Katharos” and means “pure”… but that’s not why my parent’s chose it. They wanted to call me Sarah, but with a last name of Berry, they thought “Sarah Berry” sounded too much like a Sarah Lea Cheesecake. Kate was less cheesecakey so won the vote!

    FABRIC ME!!

This give away came at the PERFECT time! My boyfriend just bout this horribly ugly, massive man chair (that actually has good bones) and there is no way I am letting it in the living room without a spiffy new re-upholstery job!

My mom, being the fun (read: a little nutty) feminist that she is wanted a strong name for a girl. Hailey actually means ‘female hero’!

I go by Lindsay (pronounced Lynn-Z) but my Chinese name is actually very similar – Ling Xi (pronounced Ling-C). In Mandarin (my particular Chinese dialect) each character has a meaning. So Ling means hearing/listening and Xi means little creek. So ‘listening to the little creek’. :)

My grandpa picked it out because it was pretty and feminine (I ended up very much a tomboy in my youth!) I’ve always liked my name because it was a much easier transition when I immigranted to an English speaking country than others I’ve known who have hard to pronounce Chinese names.

FABRIC ME! My name (which I love) was picked so that it was not a family name. My parents had pressure from both sides to name me after someone, but they wanted me to be my own person. I think it worked. :)

Fabric Me! One of my parents had friends (older family friends though, not best friends) that had children named Ronica and Roxanne. My parents liked those names, so simply named my sister and I those names! I do like my name and probably wouldn’t change it. Though I do get sick of people thinking they are SO creative and cute by singing the song to me!

My mom ran away when she was 16 and ended up in Alabama where she met a little girl named Leanne. She always said she was going to name her first daughter that. 10 years later, I came along. (Sidenote: Upon arriving in Alabama en route to FL, my now-totally-law-abiding-mother was promptly picked up by a police officer who waited outside while she ate dinner at a diner and then took her to the station to call her mom…in Chicago. My poor gram had to drive down to pick her up. The story never gets old.)

FABRIC ME! My name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Beth. Once, I asked my mom about it. She said she always liked the name Beth and she doesn’t know why they didn’t just name me Beth. That would have been helpful in school. I always had to tell the teachers my nickname and it would have been fewer bubbles to fill in on tests.
