Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!
My name was chosen when my parents were watching the credits of “Little House on the Pairie” late night re-runs, one of the starring actresses was Melissa Sue. My mom’s name was Sue, so they though that fit well.

I was named after an old woman in a care home that my mother met. It sounds like she had a pretty great sense of humor.

I’m named for my great-great-great grandmother. Apart from the two hundred year age difference, we’re said to have a lot in common.

My parents chose my name because they didn’t know anyone else with that name and they really loved it. Well, they must have started a trend because it became really popular and there are always a few of us wherever I go. I’ve always liked my name, though.

FABRIC ME! I was named after my father (his name feminized) and my brother was named after my mother (the masculine version of her name)–my parents didn’t want confusion in the family by duplicating names, and it worked quite well. But they had to be more inventive for the next two children!!

My name means princess in Hebrew, though at the time it was selected, it was an underused family name. I was one of three Sarahs in my kindergarten class, but there are still only three within my first and second cousins, which number in the triple-digits now.

My name means princess. I like the name but there are always a lot of Sarahs everywhere, and I think it was the #1 name the year I was born. My mom says she didn’t know that until afterward. I definitely wanted something less ubiquitous for my own daughter.

I was named after Audrey Hepburn’s character in “Two for the Road.” My parents liked the extra oomph of an “h” in the middle, but I asked for it to be silent when I saw the movie as a little girl. They very kindly obliged and I’ve been confusing people with my silent “h” ever since!
