Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! I don’t think it was picked because of this, but my name (Katherine, technically) comes from the Greek meaning ‘pure’. My classmates at school certainly had fun with that!

    FABRIC ME!

Although my father is Portuguese, he lived the major part of his youth in Angola. When he came to Brazil, he met and fell in love with my mother, who is black. So, they decided to name their children after Angola cities. Since my older sister was named after the capital (Luanda), I got Huila, which is a small province from Angola.

My name means “industrious” which I think I’ve grown into since I found a career that I really love. My mom said she always wanted a “little Emily” so that’s what she got when I was born. She called me that all the time when I was little, and still did occasionally until I was in high school.

FABRIC ME! My name? Well, aside from the fact that it reflects my Skandinavian/Russian heridity, it was the name of a character in the book my mom was reading when she was pregnant with me. Only years later did I learn the character was a prostitute. Thanks mom…. :-)

My parents planned on naming me Emily, but on the day I was born, my mom read in the newspaper that it was the most popular girls name of the year. And she wanted to give me a name that was different. She named me Garnet after a beloved college roommate. And I have only met one other Garnet in my life.

I was named after a movie, Savannah Smiles. My mom is Canadian and had never heard of Savannah, Georgia. About a year after I was born my dad got stationed in GA, and I lived there for about 21 years. People always ask me if I was named after the city or even if i was “made” in Savannah(who would ask such a thing!?)

My son’s name, however, is my maternal great grandmothers last name- my way of continuing my family traditions.
