Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I am named after my paternal grandmother and have my maternal grandmothers maiden name as my middle name. I used to wish I had a different name, but now I appreciate the meaning behind it!

I was named after 2 grandmothers and I am grateful I was nicknamed Peggy. I much prefer that name.

My name doesn’t have anything super special with it, but one thing that I wish my mom would have pushed harder for was the spelling of it. Her maiden name was Leighton, and she wanted to spell it Ashleigh. That would have been cool!

My name means a “Hebrew princess.” The cool part is my middle name, though, because it’s my mother’s middle name as well as my Grandmother’s middle name. All of us are firstborn, so I’m looking forward to passing that down to my firstborn when the time comes.

My name means the nest of an eagle or large bird of prey, and my parents chose it because a. they are English teachers b. Treska (my last names) has heavy consonants that they wanted to counterbalance and c. it was the name of a groovy John Denver album. I love my name, but am sad to now have to share it with underwear stores across America :(.

LOVE you guys….read this every day and just got your book too!

My parents wanted an Irish name to go w/our last, but my middles (yes, two–it was forever confusing & never fit completely on forms) are my Mom’s first & maiden names.
I’ve carried a simplified version of that tradition on somewhat w/my son, giving him an Irish first name, and my maiden name (also Irish) as his middle–more of a concession really for giving up my last name…

I always loved the name Mollie (my mom’s name) and have said forever that if my name wasn’t Sara, I’d want it to be Mollie. That’s why we’ll be naming our first daughter Mollie! I was thisclose to being named Jennifer. This was in the early 1970’s. At the last minute my mom decided that a) Jennifer might get too popular and b) “Jenny” sounded terrible with our last name (It did. Thanks, Mom!). So they went back several decades and found Jeanette. Now, instead of being one of several Jennifers, I get “Hey, that’s my grandmother’s name!”.

My mom’s grandparents immigrated from Sweden so they chose a Swedish name for me. It means “from the ship land” which fits because of, you know, all the ship sailing I do! I’m kidding of course, but despite the weird meaning I always liked my name growing up because it was unique among the Jennys and Jessicas and Lindseys and Ashleys. We chose our daughter’s name, Lila, because it means “You are mine” in Hebrew and her middle name, Josephine, because it means “blessed.” Both her names are also literary references (Gilead and Little Women).

I don’t have a great story about my name but as a kid growing up I would catch frogs and name each of them Bob, and then number them. My frog-catching buddy in 1st grade wanted to name them after his dad and it stuck! I know we got at least to the 40s but then we likely lost count.

And I have been a home decor fabric nut the last few weeks. Curtain fabric, reupholstering ottomans, pillows, new duvet, dog bed, etc… so I would be beyond thrilled to have free money to spend!!!

My name (Kathryn Elizabeth) is actually a family name from way back… I have 3 older brothers, and it was always my parents’ “girl name”. (Well, one time my mom was pregnant around the same time as one of their good friends – the friend had her baby first and named her Kate, so they changed it to Sarah Elizabeth. Thankfully, Peter Charles was born, and it went back to Kathryn until I finally came along!) Anyway, the names hail from my mom’s side of the family, which is good, because we had a Hertha on my dad’s side… (no offense intended toward anyone here named Hertha!)

My first name, Elizabeth, comes from my mom’s side of the family. It’s been in every generation dating back to the civil war. The Elizabeth during the civil war was known as Wild Betsy Stein after her husband was killed, leaving her with several children, during the Civil War.

My middle name, Jeanne, is after my step grandmother on my dad’s side, who drove my mom to the hospital on a daily basis when I decided to be a month late.

Well, it goes something like this: My mother wanted to name me Sharon, but that apparently was the name of an ex-girlfriend of my dad’s … so when that came to light, my mother picked “Shannon” instead. But for some reason my dad forgot to mention that “Shannon” was the name of his golden retriever growing up. So yes, I have always wished for a different name, for obvious reasons. :)
