Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

As for my name, I love it. No real family connection or anything in particular, but I love how there are very few Shelbies so whenever someone says my name, odds are it’s about me. If I were a Queen of some strange land, I would outlaw the use of my name for any other person. That way I could ensure that I am in fact the only one!

    FABRIC ME!!

I was born during a blizzard in December. My Mom was recovering in her room looking through a Christmas sales ad. She saw an ad for Chanel No 5 perfume and thought “What a beautiful name.” It would fit perfectly with the rest of the girls names except she would have to change the “C” to an “S”. (the girls are “S” names and the boys are “B” names, there are 9 kids in my family!) So, I became Shanel….and No 5 was even better because I was the 5th girl…..perfect!

I was supposed to be Alexandra, but my Dad loved the Bread song “Aubrey” as sung by Perry Como and he convinced my Mom to name me that. Where we live, Aubrey is a more commonly known male name and my husband has a more common female name, therefore our names prove very confusing to people.

My two older siblings had “T” names and when I came along that name popped into their heads. I have always liked it. I have only met two people with my name. We instantly had a bond with one another. My given name, Rhianna, means witch. Yep. That’s right. My parents didn’t know what it meant when they named me (though I doubt it would’ve made a difference), my dad liked the Fleetwood Mac song “Rhiannon” (first clue that the name has something to do with witchcraft=it’s featured in a song by Stevie Nicks). My mom, ever the control freak, changed the ending from th -on to the softer-sounding -a. As an adult, I go by Anna, which is much more my taste. :)

PS-For the record, I don’t have a problem with witchcraft, or the names Rhiannon or Rhianna, but none of them suit me personally. :)

My great aunt was a midwife in Liverpool in Sydney. She was infact the first midwife in South west Sydney. My mother loved her very much but in all her years, all the babies she brought into the world not one was named after her. Her name was Agnes Isobelle and my mum thought it would be fitting to carry on her name. She devoted her life helping women, se served in the war as a nurse and could not have children herself. I hope I can live up to her.

    Isobelle.

Nothing special about my name really. Though I hated my real first name and started going by my middle name when I got married. Since I had to get everything re-issued with my new last name anyhow, I thought “why not change the first name too?” So, my hubby dated and proposed to a Melissa but is married to an Anne.

My name is Leanne mostly by accident. I was my parents’ first kid, and they were *certain* they’d have a boy and name him Leo. When I showed up as a little lady, they were stumped and just girlified the name Leo to Leanne. But mostly, they’ve called me Lee.

FABRIC ME !!! and the pillows that will match the curtains I’m currently sewing for our new house :-)

    As for my names…

Seren -the one I use when I’m blogging- is a definition of how I feel in my life with my Amoureux (Lover) and my kids. I know there supposed to be an -e at the end of the word but if you spell it without the -e, it sounds like the french word “sereine” and the 2 words means the same and I love this idea.

My birth name, Celia, was given to me after my pregnant mother saw a nice little girl playing in a park during the last trimester of her pregnancy. She told me she felt in love with the image of this little girl and with the name and here I am !
And I never, ever, wanted to change it. On the contrary, I always felt blessed to have that name :-)

My mom originally planned to name me Carla, after my dad whose name is Carlos. She changed her mind at the last minute when she met a nurse in labor and delivery named Marci, and that’s where my name came from. I spent much of Kindergarten trying to convince her to legally change my name to Cookie because I thought it was a good name for a Flight Attendant and that was my number one goal in life at the age of five.
