Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I was born when Alyssa Milano was just starting to become popular. My parents heard the name and liked it, but spelled it with an i instead of y. Aside from the fact that my teachers always pronounced my name wrong on the first day of classes, I love my name. It is not a common one. My middle name, Lynn, is my mom’s first name.

My parents were certain I was a boy, so they hadn’t discussed a girls name. During labor, my mom was watching a soap opera with a lawyer named Jillian, and they decided if it happened to be a girl, that would be her name – surprise surprise, it’s a girl! – and that’s how I got my name!

My parents had an agreement that if I had dark hair, I would be Rachel but if I had light or no hair, I would be Crystal, and their next girl would be the other. The joke was on them when my dark hair fell out and turned very blonde for a few years, and my younger sister had even darker hair (and kept it). Plus, my mom spelled my name wrong on the birth certificate (second a), but decided to keep it.

My mom chose my name because it was the name of her favorite character in a book. The character was based on Alexandra Romanov the last zarina of Russia. Nothing like being named for a woman that gets executed right? I don’t have anything against the name, but Im not a huge fan. People generally think I’m a guy if I just list Alex or they call me Alexander. For that reason I gave my daughter a very feminine name!

FABRIC ME! My parents were spitballing names for me when my mom was pregnant, and my dad told my mom he’d like to name me Chuck if I were a boy. She immediately nixed it, saying “Chuck” was an awful sounding name. He came back to her saying that he still liked the name, but also wanted to name me after his grandfathers Gordon and Herbert. I guess I should be thankful I turned out to be a girl, because otherwise I would be known as “Gordoherberchuck” according to my dad.
