Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name, Pallavi, is literally translated to mean “prelude to a song.” But if you break it up into syllables (pa – la -vi) it equates to the something very familiar (do – re – mi). I love it, and I hope you do too!

While in labor my mom watched an interview of a singer(nobody remembers who). He had several daughters and all of their names started with an A. The name Alyssa caught my mom’s attention, but she didn’t know how to spell it. Therefore I was named Alisa . . . A-lis-A.

My folks were convinced I was going to be a boy, John Francis. I left the hospital as “baby girl” and it took my folks almost 2 months to come up with a name. I still tease them that after 2 months, the best they could come up with was Susan Jean??? :>

Ugh, I feel like I have a quintessential 80’s Babysitter’s Club name. It’s not even short for anything more dignified. I also happened to inherit blonde curls and pinchable cheeks. I’m tempted to go goth every day just to add some balance. Ah well.

My mother’s name is Marcella and my father’s middle name was Ray, so I became Marci-Rae. I hated it growing up but eventually I grew to love having a name that’s not-so-common. (but when you’re a kid, all you want is one of those cool little license plates with your name on it!)

    Fabric Me!

I’ve always liked my name, it’s recognizable and easy to spell, and in 3rd grade the teacher used it to demonstrate how elegant cursive writing is, with all the loops and swoops. Unfortunately, I never got the hang of cursive writing, and my signature is a mess!

Linda means lovely in Spanish, and every Linda I’ve ever met has been true to her name. I hope it comes back in style soon!

I don’t think there is any special meaning behind my name…interesting story though – my family has an Irish last name and when I was around 20, my dad informed me that it wasn’t our real last name! Apparently his father changed their name from a Polish name to an Irish one so he would have a better chance at getting a job. My mother’s side is Irish though.

FABRIC ME! One of my grandmothers is named Alice and the other one is Alise (it’s a southern thing, pronounced Ay-leez) so they named me Allie as a shout out to both of them. Actually, they named me Ali, but in 9th grade I got tired of people reading it as the dude’s name and reinvented myself as one can only do in 9th grade. Shockingly it stuck!
