Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No special meaning behind my first name that I know of; but my middle name (Annichen) is after the Swedish woman, Annichen Kringstad, who won the world championships in orienteering the year before I was born. (My dad is an orienteerer)

Not much behind the name. My mom is Dutch, and her and her siblings all have very Dutch names (Marja, Hans, Ingrid,…) and so for my brother and I, I guess she wanted something ‘normal’ (aka boring): Scott and David.

April means open or new beginning. I wasn’t supposed to be named April, my mom liked the name but my parents decided on a different one. Then came the day I was born, 2 months early, and with everything going on my mom forgot they had decided on a different name. So when she was asked what my name would be for my birth certificate she naturally said April. When my dad found out he just laughed.

Pretty please FABRIC ME!! My name, Amber, means “fossilized tree-sap”. I learned this in the 5th grade while watching Jurassic Park at school with my classmates. I quickly got nicknamed “fossilized tree-sap” which is not a nickname but an extended name, but it was all in good fun. My parents of course did not know about such a meaning, they just thought it was pretty, and I have to agree with them; I have always liked my name.

My name is Amanda, originally from Latin, and it means “beloved”, or “one that is loved”… If you think about the spanish “amar” (to love), from the same root latin word, which becomes “amado” or “amada” (loved, in the masculine or feminine) it makes total sense then in english. And I happen to love my name… Though my middle name, Frances, always seemed stuffy and too unusual to me growing up (I was named after my great grandmother…? Or was it an aunt?) In any case, I love it now!

My posting name is actually my middle name (cause I’m kinda paranoid about privacy blah blah blah lol). My mom just liked it, but spelled it strange because she knew a woman named Lynn and she thought her named looked pretty with a Y. It ended up in the middle name spot because when paired with my first name (which my dad picked) it just flowed better with Lyndsey as the middle rather than the first name.
