Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

What a wonderfully random question! No special meaning, my folks just liked it (and so did everyone else in 1983).

Although, apparently, my mom first noticed the name because there was an instrumental piece entitled “Heather” on the B-side of a Carpenters’ album from the 70’s. I’ve since learned that the song was originally composed as background music for a Geritol commercial. Ha!

FABRIC ME! My parents could only agree on one boy name (Michael Alan) and one girl name (Amy Nicole). Thankfully, when my older sister was born they changed the middle name to keep Nicole for a possible younger sister. Otherwise, I think I would have been named Michael. A nice name, but Nicole fits me a bit better ;)

I’m named after my great-grandma who was full Norwegian. So, of course my parents gave me the Norwegian spelling of my name, which every. single. person butchered while growing up. Didn’t get a nickname until later in high school. I appreciate the name now, but definitely not growing up!

FABRIC ME! My family nickname comes from my (older) sister being unable to say my name when we were babies :) — it was the closest she could come, and it stuck :) My parents also tried to nickname me “Bubbles,” but apparently I asked them to stop calling me that when I was 4 — (a) the name came from my bubbly personality and (b) whyever did I ask for them to stop? Baby genius me.

Fabric me! Megan means little pearl in Welsh and I think is some form of Margaret. I’m not sure why my parents chose it, but pearls are my favorite gem so I’ve come to appreciate my name. My engagement ring was even a pearl and I doubt my now husband knew that my name was related to that.

I’m more attached to my middle name, Marie, which is always given to the first daughter in our family. Not sure why that is, but it is nice that my mom and grandmother have the same middle tying us together since none of our last names are the same anymore.

Laci means cheerful/happy, and I started smiling a lot right after I was born while the doctors/nurses were cleaaning me up. I didn’t cry…just smiled (or so the story goes). My middle name means ‘Desired.’ After my older brother was born, my mom was told she couldn’t have anymore kids (really funny now because she went on to have 3 more). My dad really wanted a little girl; so he chose my middle name to symbolize that desire. :-) I secretly hated it as a kid until my dad told me that story.

My name was chosen very last minute. They thought I was going to be a boy, so when it turned out the other way, they had to quickly choose a name. My mom had received a lot of maternity clothes throughout her pregnancy as gifts, which unfortunately she wouldn’t be able to use much longer, but she did receive one shirt that wasn’t maternity, and the brand was Kristin Nicole, which is how I got my name.

My mom was obsessed with the actor Ryan O’Neal back in the day. She and my dad knew that they wanted to use my dad’s middle name (O’Shea) for a boy’s middle name and Ryan sounded nice as a first name. Well, surprise! She got a girl instead and named me Ryan Barbara (middle name after my aunt and grandmother). My younger brother got the O’Shea 4 years later (he’s Cameron O’Shea).
