Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric me!!

I was named after the dog that lived upstairs. All the women in my mom’s office were pregnant at the same time and giving their daughters Irish names. My mom planned to name me Kathleen after my grandmother, but two other women gave their daughters that name and my mom wanted something different. She couldn’t think of anything until she heard the upstairs neighbors calling their dog. That’s where I got the name, Kelly.

Fabric Me!!! I was going to be named Amanda, but a week before I was born, my parents met a family with a daughter named Becca. They loved it and changed my name. It worked out well because my brother married an Amanda, so it is nice that we have different names!

I don’t think there is a story behind my name – but it’s a rare one for a 30-year old (it’s always someone’s grandmother’s name!), and I’ve always appreciated that!

I love my name. It means queen of the sea. I was named that because as soon as my mom heard it she loved it. At the time there was a really popular latin pop singer with that name and it just stuck with her and she named me. =)

FABRIC ME! I was named after my paternal grandmother. I was the 6th out of 7 granddaughters, and it had to be done sooner or later. I’ve never liked it (nobody can pronounce it or spell it correctly), and I made sure that both of my children had “normal” names!

The story of my name is a bit complicated..I didn’t even learn it until my 18th birthday! You see, my mom loved the name “Allison” and my dad was fine with it as long as he could decide how to spell it. He went with “Allyson.” On my 18th birthday, he told me why. Along with my middle name (Louise, a family name) I have every vowel, including the “sometimes y” in my name!

FABRIC ME! I think there were about a gazillion girls with some sort of form of my name born in the late 80’s. I’m thankful my parents went with a simple, phonetic spelling of my name, to make it stand out. My parents tell me I was almost named Skylar. I always wonder if I would be the same person if I had a different name…

I’ve always been a bit indifferent to my name, when I was little I thought it was clever to put “quartknee” on my school papers. My favorite story about my name is when my father called my mother’s parents to tell them I was born. Upon hearing my name, my grandmother said “Oh. Well, we’ll love her anyway!” LOL

My name has a boring story. Melissa is just a name my mom liked at the time she was pregnant with me. I do not really care for my name. I cannot think of a name I would rather have though! Many people today, name their children “trendy” names. I tried to stay away from “trendy” when choosing names for our children. Amelia’, Henry, and Hudson are not-so-trendy.

    I would LOVE new fabric!

I was named after “Brandy, what a fine girl. What a good wife you will be.” I’m not kidding. I always thought it sounded like an adult entertainer. Also, my parents 2nd choice was Candace. Got to love the 80s.

I have no curtains in my house. This would be awesome. Wait, that’s not true. I have those paper accordion blinds. Do they count? I don’t think they should count.

Fabric Me! I am the oldest of 3 girls and a boy. The legend goes that my parents agreed my father would name the girls and my mother would name the boys. At the time Kelly was quite common as a boys name. My other two sisters also have names that could be considered boys names. Thankfully, the names were also trending for girls so we weren’t stuck with names we hate. I love my name and I think my sisters love their’s as well. My brother was named after my father who had a very strong gender appropriate name.
