Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric Me!!!

I was born in the ’80s and my dad wanted to name me Stevie after Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. My mom was like No Way, so they compromised on Stephanie. I love it. I hated it when I was a kid (no idea why but I wanted my name to be Robin), but now I love it. I don’t know many other Stephanies and my husband tells me he thinks it’s “elegant.” :)

FABRIC ME! Sorry, I don’t have a cool story for my first name (Lisa). Seems there are many who have the same name and we’re all around the same age so it was a popular one ‘back then’! However, my middle name is a shortened version of my paternal grandmother’s name who has since passed. It’s nice to have a reminder of her.

There is no special story to go with how I was named, but there is a funny story about my
middle name, which is Lee. In my family, there was a horrible Aunt Lee who everyone hated
and who was just awful to everyone. She believed, incorrectly, that I was named for her. So grateful
    that isn’t really true……

FABRIC ME!!!! This would be so useful for a few projects I have in the queue!

My name is Sarah, which means princess. I used to try to get kids in school to call each other by the meanings of our names so people would call me that. It didn’t work. My maiden name is Farris, which is Lebanese for warrior or knight. And my married name is Warren, which is also means warrior.

So, married or not, I am a warrior princess. Boom.

FABRIC ME! My name is Dutch, and it is a man’s name in that country. My parents went to college in upstate New York, where the name is quite common because of the Dutch immigrants who settled there. There was also at the time a beer called Fort Schuyler, which sealed the deal for my folks. I am named after a beer, and it is a man’s name, and it is hard to pronounce if you have never seen it before. I love my name, though, and even though some years the first day of school was embarrassing because my name got mangled, I wouldn’t change it for anything.

The story has it that my mom wanted to name me Amanda but my dad didn’t like it. So, they started over with the baby name book and found Adria. And it stuck.

Growing up, I always wanted a different name…something far more common and something that would lend itself to nicknames that weren’t “A”. I’ve gotten used to it now, but the perpetual mispronunciations and misspellings still frustrate me.

I was named after one of my great grandmothers (Johanna). I think my mom just really liked the name. No one calls me Johanna though. I’ve always gone by the name Joey. I didn’t always like my name because it was different, but now I do for that reason!
