Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

“Sara” means princess. There isn’t much of a story behind how I got my name. I had an ancestor named Sarah Eliza, but my mother just loved the name.

And the story behind my name… was that my mom blurted it as a last minute decision between Gillian, Amy, or Candace (Candace won!) Apparently it stems from the names of all the queens in Ethiopia from ancient times. Or glowing white? Sure!

When my mother was pregnant with me, she was shopping for baby clothes and found a dress with a tag that read, “Name your next little girl Alyssa.” So she did. I guess she was susceptible to ad messages…

I just checked out the online fabric store and I am drooling! I am planning on making a new duvet this year so winning this prize would be amazing.

Well, my parents had several names picked out for me, Tiffany (if I had blonde hair and blue eyes) and Heather (if I had red hair and green eyes). Well, in the midst of the meds they gave my mom during delivery, she decided it to be Tiffany…even though as a baby I started with red hair (which turned blonde as I got older) and blue eyes (which as a child switched between blue and green depending on clothing). I’m happy to say I’ve lived up to the name Tiffany with everything working out in the way it should with blonde hair and blue eyes. My middle name has more significance (Louise) because my mom and my grandmother have this middle name. The middle name was given to my grandmother because Louise was her mother’s best friend’s name.

My name Reshma means “Silk” “Silky”. In India, name is selected as per the Zodiac signs and birth stars. My parents were asked to select the name(after I was born) starting with “Re” or “Ra”. My Mom selected “Reshma” which was not a very common or popular name at that time. I do like my name and I have only met 2-3 other “Reshma’s” till date….:-).

me, nothing special.. my son who was born last month however.. When my wife and I met years ago, we’d always known what we would name our daughter if we had one (and we wound up having one and stuck to that name in the end) but we never had a name for a boy. That changed when we were prepping for our wedding and the priest, during our first meetings with him, noticed that both my wife and I were baptized at a “St.Thomas” church, though one in Washington, and one in Quebec. “St Thomas brought you together, surely you’ll name your son Thomas if you have a boy someday right?” and it just CLICKED.. it worked perfectly.. so, on the Mayan Apocalypse, we had the honor of naming our son Thomas Gregory…

hope he likes it, cause we’re not changing it! haha

I’ll go by Kris, Krissy, my dad even calls me Lissie. But I can’t stand Kristy for some reason. And when I found out that I was named Kristin because of that, I thought that was pretty dang amusing!

My name is Martha Ann. On my maternal side I had an Aunt Stella Martha. My maternal grandmother was Anna Martha, her mother was Hannah Martha. It wasn’t until this contest came up for discussion that I found out my paternal grandmothers name was Martha also. It is said that the name goes farther back on both sides. In my adolescence, I never appreciated its uniqueness. In my young adulthood as I started having my own kids I proclaimed that awful name is stopping with me! Now I appreciate its heritage, the deep love & respect with which it was bestowed on me.
