Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Online fabric store has probably the worst customer service ever and will probably not be able to handle the increased traffic your blog will bring them so buyer beware.

I was named after my paternal grandmother, which explains why I almost never meet somebody my age with my same name… it’s always “my grandmother’s name was Jeannie” or “I had a great-aunt Jeannie”… haha

My parents named me after the late, great Whitney Houston in hopes that I’d share her love of singing. Fortunately, I do–but without the struggles that she had! The actual old-school, Anglo-Saxon meaning of my name is…I think “one from the White Island.” Kinda boring. Ehn.

My parents chose my name to match my father’s initials, while my brother’s matches my mom’s initials. I was supposed to be named Carra, but when my father called his mother to say I had been born, she told him it was his great aunt Katherine’s birthday. Since everyone called her Katie, my parents decided to go with their second choice for my name — Caitlyn, shortened to Caity.

    Fabric ME!

Well, I’ve always been okay with my name I think, Margaret Anna, however my parents were told that it was too ‘old’ for a little girl…so they called me Maggie. I enjoyed being the only Maggie in my classes throughout school…and then I started realizing something. When someone would ask me my name I’d tell them, and most of the time they’d respond with, “oh! My golden retriever’s name was Maggie when I was little!” or…”I used to know such a sweet cocker spaniel named Maggie..” I started to realize that my cute little girl nick name that my family had thought was so sweet…was usually chosen to be the family dog’s name. I’ve since come to terms with it, but if I end up having a baby girl at some point, I’m going to try to make sure that she doesn’t share her name with numerous retrievers, cocker spaniels and other family dogs. :-)

His sister (my Aunt) is named Julie as well, but they claim they didn’t technically name me after her. They just like the name! Good thing b/c although it wasn’t my absolute favorite growing up, I like it now. :)

FABRIC ME! There is no family connection behind my name. In fact, although I was born two weeks overdue my parents did not have a name chosen for me yet and my grandmother suggested ‘Kelli.’ My mom had been considering Joy instead, but as it turns out one of the meanings for Kelli, warrior, actually suits me better (in the best way possible, of course!).

Due to an ultrasound results mix-up (not that surprising b/c I was born in Soviet Russia), my parents were expecting a boy. When I arrived, they had no name picked out and so for the first 2 weeks I was simply “daughter dear.” Then my very conservative Russian Orthodox grandma came to visit and was horrified at my lack of name. So she pulled out a book of martyrs and checked which saint was martyred close to my birthdate. That’s how they did it in the old days and that’s how I got my name. I love it.
