Fab Freebie: Sew Sweet

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – see who won below!***

Thanks to random.org, these three ladies are getting a kick start to Mother’s Day: Traci (who inherited her mother’s worrying skills!), April (who got her mom’s love of shopping, travel and new things) and Stacy (who inherited the gift of being a good cook from her mom).

Because becoming a mom has mysteriously given Sherry the urge to learn how to sew (more on that here and here) we thought we’d use this pre-Mother’s Day giveaway to dish out TWO fabric-tastic prizes to THREE lucky winners. And they won’t have to sew a stitch because it has already been done for ’em. The first comes from City Chic Country Mouse, whose Etsy shop caters to those who want to inject a bit of chic to their chore list (not that any moms should be doing housework on Mother’s Day). Each of our three winners can choose from any of their colorful, graphic, and punchy ironing board covers, which will definitely cheer up any laundry room:

Ironing Boards

Plus those same three lucky winners get a double dose this week. A customized fabric wreath from a local Richmonder who puts her sewing prowess to work in her Etsy shop, Love Elaine is also on the agenda. While she’s got cool modern spins on aprons, quilts, and bags – her fabric wreaths are always a favorite. And yup, each winner gets to pick our their own colors.

LoveElaine Giveaway

  • PRIZE: Any ironing board cover from City Chic Country Mouse and a custom fabric wreath from Love Elaine
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SEW ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … tell us one quality you’re glad you inherited – or wish you had inherited – from your mother (or other parental type figure). Are you grateful she instilled strong family values? Or that she passed down her sense of style / fabulous cooking abilities? Or do you keep waiting for her sewing skills to kick in like Sherry?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, May 4th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Three
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States and Canada
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday morning for the announcement of our winners. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just like rewarding our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from City Chic Country Mouse and Love Elaine.

Also, I come seeking your wisdom :) . . . I have the same duvet cover as your master bedroom, and I recently purchased an antique (but in need of painting) dresser. I want paint it to “match” the duvet without being too matchy-matchy. Do you have any ideas on what color I could paint the dresser? Thank you!! Love love love your blog!

SEW ME!!! I’m happy that I recently inherited my mother’s trusty Bernina sewing machine. After 25 years of good use, she upgraded and I was the lucky recipient of that lovely machine. Look into that brand for when you upgrade your machine, Sherry!

My mother instilled a great sense of compassion in me. Part of that is probably because she was planning to be a guidance counselor (however, she ran out of money and had to drop out after 3 years of college). But she’s always shown large amounts of compassion, and I am constantly “putting myself in other people’s shoes” instead of judging them. Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes not, but it’s ingrained in me.

I’d have to say I love the OCD habits that were drilled into my at a very young age…if it wasn’t done correctly, I’d do it again…I learned to get it right the first time and am now a complete organizational STUD muffin! :) I’m never bored but if I am in the slightest, you’ll find me ripping a closet or cupboard apart only to put it back together in a much better fashion!

i’m lucky to have inherited frugality that often results in creativity. my great-grandmother was very frugal– she even paid for a brand new car in full, in cash, and she was not a wealthy woman by any means. my grandmother was frugal as well, and she taught me to try to make what you need before you go out and buy it. my only regret is that we didn’t have enough time together for her to teach me how to knit. she knit christmas stockings for her entire family– long stockings enough to fit an infant, with the names knitted down the front. luckily, before she passed away in december, she knit three extra blank ones for me and my future family. i hope that i can learn how to continue this tradition or make my own!

Funny enough, the things that I inherited from my mother (and Grandmother) is sewing ability. Not just the skills to follow a pattern but to visualize and create with fabric in creative ways. The ironing board cover work look AMAZING in my sewing studio.

Sew Me! My mom tried to teach me to sew and even gave me a sewing maching. It just wasn’t meant to be. When her sewing machine broke a few years later, I just gave her mine to use since it was still brand new. Now whenever I need something sewn she says, “well since your sewing machine is at my house i”ll just do it for you”, lol.

unlike my mom’s organizational/time-management/general awesomeness skills, which are SO NOT ME. My mom is the gold standard for moms, and I find myself constantly lacking in comparison. Darn it, Mom! (she can do that, too. Darning, that is. Of socks. Can anything else be darned?)

I am happy that my mom passed along her ability to talk to people. Growing up I always hated it when she would strike up a conversation with people in line at the grocery store or wherever, but now that I feel comfortable doing the same, I think it is a good trait. What with all the technology we all use today, I think interacting with other humans (face to face) is a dying talent, and one that I hope to keep alive!

SEW ME! One thing I *wish* I had inherited from my mother is her ability to sew. She used to make all of my (and my siblings) dresses/outfits for special occasions. Easter, communion, Halloween, graduation, you name it, she made it! I have always envied her abilities and thought the skill would pass down. Unfortunately, though my sewing turns out better than Sherry’s, it’s certainly not wearable for special occasions.
