Random.org had a tough job of sifting through nearly 7,000 jewelry hungry ladies (and gentlemen!) but has selected two random winners as… Lisa S. (who, like many, always wears her wedding ring but never gets sick of it because her husband did a great job) and SJ (who also wears her wedding and engagement rings out everyday). Congrats!
Sherry here. I don’t usually write the giveaway posts, but we’re making an exception since I was the one who twisted John’s arm into this week’s giveaway. Instead of our usual DIY & decor-related prizes, this week we’re giving away some body decor that was DIYed (well, created) by two talented jewelry designers. Yup, we have two hundred dollars worth of sparkly, sparkly jewelry for ya (or for your mom/wife/sis/girlfriend/grandma if you’re a dude).
The bling comes from two designers that I couldn’t love more (nope, I didn’t get any swag to say that – I truly love their stuff). The first is Erin McDermott, a Charlotte-based designer who studied at both my and John’s alma maters (FIT in NYC and UVA here in Virginia) and has been featured in Real Simple. Here are some of my favorites things of hers:
And then there’s Towne & Reese, whose studio we crashed earlier this year. Not only do I love their stuff, but I love that they name their pieces after their friends’ children (Towne and Reese are the founders’ daughters’ names). And get this, Clara will actually have a piece named after her in their Spring collection. Do you know how excited that makes this geeky momma? Probably too excited. You bet I’m staking out their Facebook page for a sneak peek. Anyway here are some of my favorite things from their current collection:

i wear a Claddagh ring every day. when i was younger (and single-er) it was a nice way to remind me of my Irish heritage. plus the symbolism for the Claddagh ring is really beautiful – love(the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). now that i’m in a relationship i’ve flipped it the other way to let others know that my heart is taken by someone truly special who loves me, is my best friend, and is the most loyal person i know!

Oooh shiny! My mother had an emerald ring that she wore all the time. I mean when she made biscuits; when she washed the dishes by hand; when she did the laundry; when she went to church; whether she was dressed up or in her pajamas. This emerald ring was very special to her. My dad had given it to her, and though I don’t know all the details, it carried some special meaning for them. When she died two years ago, my dad brought her jewelry to me, her only child, to keep. I didn’t feel right about wearing it. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry on a daily basis, and it was the one ring that symbolized my mother to everyone. Just this spring, I called my dad and asked him if he would mind if I had it cleaned up (you know, to get the years of biscuits and detergent out of the setting) and sized so that I could wear it. I had finally thought that wearing it would not be sad but happy. He enthusiastically said I absolutely should! He said if I didn’t, I must save it for my baby daughter – my mother’s only granddaughter who was born 3 months after her death. He told me that ring meant a lot between them and it was only fitting her daughter and granddaughter should wear it with love. So, I had it cleaned and sized and I wear it as often as the situation allows, ‘cause I take my rings off to make biscuits and to do the dishes. The baby has shown an affinity for it too, sometimes spying it on my bedside table and sliding it on to her index finger and grinning from ear to ear. I tell her someday it will be hers. And I know it makes my mother smile.

I have four rings that I never take off. My engagement ring and wedding band are on one hand, and on the other I have my Meredith College onyx (a huge tradition at my alma mater!). I also ring that belonged to my mother. She gave it to me when I was a freshman in high school and I lost it! I was devastated! Two years later I was walking down the hall with a friend and he spotted a ring on the floor and jokingly gave it to me… it was MY RING! Haven’t taken it off since!
