Fab Freebie: I’ll Drink To That

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

Sherry and I can’t stop talking about how good the toasts were at my cousin Casey’s wedding in Dallas (Wedding Crashing pics to come…). There were five in total (two groomsmen, two bridesmaids and my other cousin, the bride’s teenage brother) and each was remarkably funny, articulate and touching. Most weddings are lucky enough to have one of those, let alone a handful. So in that spirit, we think this week’s prize from Mikasa Crystal & Dinnerware is quite fitting.

Mikasa Wine Glasses

Mikasa’s been dishing out classic and stylish servingware for over 60 years (perhaps they were even on your wedding registry?) so we were stoked when they contacted us to offer up some free goodies for you our lovey readers. This week we’re serving up prizes to three lucky winners from Mikasa’s new Cheers Too line of glassware. Each set of four crystal drinking glasses features simple, modern designs that just make you wanna throw a dinner party. With lots of “beverages” on hand, of course.

Mikasa Crystal Glassware

  • PRIZE: Your choice of the Cheers Too White Wine, Double Old Fashioned, or Highball Set of Four by Mikasa
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “I’ll DRINK TO THAT” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: Tell us about a memorable toast you’ve heard (or given!) and what made it great. We could all use a few good toastmaster tips, right?
  • CONTEST CLOSES: Wednesday, August 26th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Three
  • PRIZE SHIPS: United States only this time.
  • THE USUAL: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

    I’LL DRINK TO THAT!

My best friend just got married in July (7/11) and had a really awesome ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed wedding. She’s a huge Disney freak. There were several toasts, including the entire wedding party serenading her with the song “Sweet Caroline” in honor of her name. I had a long toast written out, but I was the last speaker and people wanted to eat, so I went with my closer. I wanted to say one of those “May the road rise up to meet you” things because Carrie and John are both Irish. But I couldn’t find one that was just right, since they are a very modern couple, so I wrote my own:

May your computer or laptop never crash
May your ATM card ever bring cash
May your digital camera always hold smiles
May your plasma tv hold up for a while
May your emails and texts always bring you some fun
And may your cell phone plan always be merged as one

    To Carrie and John!

Memorable toast…ok…I don’t have one. My father toasted to us at our engagement party but he made the mistake of not waiting until everyone got quiet to start talking, so no one really heard it! So please everyone remember to wait a second to start talking.

My niece just got married on 07/11/09.
Her twin sister wrote out a beautiful, emotional, funny toast.
    And proceeded to butcher it!
Wait until she sees the video!
It was a 3 minute speech that took her about 7 to deliver ’cause every other sentence was: ” Give me a minute!”

A memorable toast for me was actually after my grandpa’s funeral. He was Korean war vet and after the funeral we all went to his VFW and one of the vets who had fought in the war with him made a toast to him honoring his courage, love, freindship and compassion. He ended it saying that he hoped he was having a beer and dance with his wife in heaven.

Probably the most memorable was the eulogy I gave at my grandmother’s funeral last week. While one of the most difficult speeches ever – it brought everyone to tears – what more can you ask for.

Keep it short and sweet. Try to shy away from all the “inside jokes”. People enjoy it more if they actually understand the speech.

A memorable toast was at our wedding – my brother-in-law was totally bashing my husband and ended with “…and you’ve finally found a woman who will actually put up with your video game addiction… and the fact that you shve your head beacuse you’re actaully bald.” It was hilarious and I can’t wait to watch the video on our 1 year anniversary in December!

My husband was best man in his friend’s wedding, and wrote a lovely, heartfelt toast about friend and new wife being “captain” and “first mate”, and navigating life together (they’re boaters and fisherman). Hubby was so nervous that he recited the line:

“Linda … Dan is your BREAST friend …”

At the utterance of the word breast, the hall erupted in laughter and the lovely, heartfelt toast was lost. Poor hubby! D & L have been married for 5 years, and we still get a good laugh out of that!

My husband’s little brother (9 years younger) gave a very humbling and humorous toast at our wedding. He explained all the times his older twin brothers would play mean jokes on him and blame him for broken stuff in the house; but then said I was the only girl his big brother brought home to meet the family that wasn’t mean to him! It was really cute!

My best friend just got married and his new father-in-law (who was drrrruuunnnk! how on earth did that happen? we just got here!) kept calling him by the wrong name (seriously, how hard is to get ‘Mike’ right?) in his 20 minute toast where he named every person in his family that wasn’t at the wedding (his great aunt Marva, by the way, has a bad hip and had to stay home to take care of her aging parrot). No one knew how to shut the guy up so we all resorted to childish snickering behind our raised champagne glasses.

The coolest toast I’ve heard was from a groom at his own wedding — except he wasn’t toasting his wife. He and a number of his friends from the Army who were in attendance had been in Iraq together, and the groom toasted them at the beginning of the reception, asking each one to stand up. When each man stood up, the groom said one great memory that he had of the two of them during their time overseas. It was a really touching moment, and also very unique in that he shared something special about each of them.

My husband gave one of the toasts for his brother’s wedding a few years ago. During the cocktail hour, he passed out a number of house keys to a several ladies at the reception. Just before his toast, he made an announcement that he knew his brother had a bit of a shady lady past and would those women in attendance please return the keys that the brother had given in his wilder days. A number of gorgeous young ladies dutifully returned the keys but the kicker was when a 90-year old female friend of the groom’s grandmother returned her key and showed a little leg action.

My maid of honor’s toast at our wedding was very memorable for me. It wasn’t the words she was saying, but the fact that up until the wedding day she thought she would be paralyzed with fear and not be able to actually get up and do it. Well, she managed to and gave an eloquent, touching toast!

At our wedding my husbands twin brother gave the best speech ever! So funny yet so sweet. He also went on to mention that they actually both were in love with me from the get go, yet my husband beat him to the punch on asking me out. I guess you learn something new everyday…even on your wedding day!

At our rehearsal dinner, one of my husband’s groomsmen gave the only toast that night. The two have been friends since they were born, so there’s a lot of dirt there. The toast was a roast of my husband from childhood on. It was histerical, but also had lots of sweet memories in it. Everyone loved it!

My short little great-toast story involve me, a significant number of rum runners, and a bridesmaid dress. I was the maid of (dis)honor at a friend’s wedding. The wedding was running late, and after a morning of mimosas, followed by a champagne toast after the ceremony, a few gin and tonics during pictures, and finally a very liberal bartender at the reception, when the toasts finally happened I was completely hammered and accidently ran the bride and groom’s names together, ala “Brangelia” – and now, five years later, their combo name is still going strong!

When I got married, we of course has toasts at the reception. My Matron of Honor gave the best one–she had me put my hand down on the table, and then told my new husband to put his hand on top of mine. She then said, “Andy, savor this moment, because this is the last time you’ll have the upper hand.” It was great–the entire crowd laughed hysterically!

The best toast I have ever heard was at my own wedding, given by my sister and matron of honor. She started out with a surprise, “Most of you don’t know this, but Maureen was married once before…(long pause) to me.” It was such a shock to hear that I’d been married before that most of the room broke out in laughter including myself. She then went on to talk about our relationship and how much we cared and loved each other over the years. We lived together through college and often acted like a married couple- we’d laugh, make each other dinner, share the household chores, and get on each others nerves. She then went on to talk about how we got divorced after she left me for her own husband and she was sure I was heart broken. She tied all of our fun, sad, and humorous moments to how that prepared me to be a loving and caring wife. It was so funny, thoughtful, and helped everyone in the room to know a bit more about us. I loved it!
