Fab Freebie: I’ll Drink To That

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

Sherry and I can’t stop talking about how good the toasts were at my cousin Casey’s wedding in Dallas (Wedding Crashing pics to come…). There were five in total (two groomsmen, two bridesmaids and my other cousin, the bride’s teenage brother) and each was remarkably funny, articulate and touching. Most weddings are lucky enough to have one of those, let alone a handful. So in that spirit, we think this week’s prize from Mikasa Crystal & Dinnerware is quite fitting.

Mikasa Wine Glasses

Mikasa’s been dishing out classic and stylish servingware for over 60 years (perhaps they were even on your wedding registry?) so we were stoked when they contacted us to offer up some free goodies for you our lovey readers. This week we’re serving up prizes to three lucky winners from Mikasa’s new Cheers Too line of glassware. Each set of four crystal drinking glasses features simple, modern designs that just make you wanna throw a dinner party. With lots of “beverages” on hand, of course.

Mikasa Crystal Glassware

  • PRIZE: Your choice of the Cheers Too White Wine, Double Old Fashioned, or Highball Set of Four by Mikasa
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “I’ll DRINK TO THAT” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: Tell us about a memorable toast you’ve heard (or given!) and what made it great. We could all use a few good toastmaster tips, right?
  • CONTEST CLOSES: Wednesday, August 26th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Three
  • PRIZE SHIPS: United States only this time.
  • THE USUAL: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I love wedding toasts that include funny stories about the couple, followed by sweet, meaningful words of well-wishes :)

    I’ll drink to that…

At my best friend’s wedding this year, I was asked to make a speech as the Maid of Honor. I had about 5 minutes and 3 glasses of champagne to prepare. When I thought about what to say, I realized that I knew they were a perfect pair from the first time I saw them together because they looked like each other. I threw this into my speech and to this day, my best friend says that was the best part of all the speeches. Who would have thought??

I recently attended a wedding where the maid of honor’s toast made frequent references to a free underwear adventure she and the bride had in college–and they roped the now-husband into it too! We were all in stitches.

I don’t have many tips, except that you can always tell when a speaker hasn’t rehearsed. Practice makes a tolerable speech!

The best speech I’ve heard was the one my little sister gave at my wedding. She has never liked public speaking so it meant so much to me that she wanted to get up in front of everyone.

I recently went to a wedding where the groom’s brother (the best man) gave his new sister a gift during his toast. It was a sippy cup. A lot of people thought she was pregnant (if you knew her you’d know this was not a position she would be in BEFORE her wedding, they are both very religious). The best man explained that his brother (the groom) is a terrible klutz and was constantly spilling beverages at the dinner table growing up. Everyone thought it was very funny. About an hour later the groom could be seen drinking champagne from the sippy cup! Too funny!

I’ll drink to that! I love the highball glasses. My sister’s toast at my wedding was the best! I asked her probably about 15 minutes before the toast if she would give one, she spoke from her heart and it meant the world to me.

There’s a Louisville, KY dive bar wherein one may hear the most obscene and explicit toasts–none of which I would dare repeat among such lovely company as those here at YHL.

Our bestman had a contest going with my sister(the Maid of Honor) as to who could give the best toast….well, my sister nailed it and did a wonerful job followed by our bestman completly blanking out and only uttering “I love you guys…” over and over again. We still laugh at the look on his face when he realized just how bad he had done! Needless to say my sister won!

I’ve been a maid of honor twice, and both times were pretty memorable. The first time, I gave the groom some gifts like a hammer to build an addition on the house for all of the wife’s clothes, a 6-pack, and some duct tape to put over his mouth when he needs to shut up. :) The second time I impersonated the groom (which was totally appropriate because of who he is and his personality). People still talk about both speeches, and I still get compliments to this day about both of them! :)

We were at our friends’ wedding and the father of the bride was making a toast. He rambled a little, but it was all really sweet. Eventually the bride started giving him the stink-eye and raised her glass. He just said to her, “It’s my daughter’s wedding day and I’ll talk as long as I want.” It was adorable!

    I’ll drink to that…

At our wedding there were four toasts:

    1. My bf (and maid of honor) who I have known since 1st grade! We took french together in high school and she quoted a passage of The Petit Prince, that made me teary and then closed by sayign let all the small stuff go and always cherish each other.

    2. My husbands best man, went on and on about beatign him at Mario Cart when they were kids and then said that he had finally beat him at something: picking the perfect girl! again teary

    3. My dad—shocked us all by remembering when my husband (then bf) gave my Mom a Mother’s Day card when we had been dating for 6 months, and said she was a great mother and the proof of that is me….and thanx for raising the woman he is falling in love with. My dad said he knew that day that this guy was the one! took me a little longer…haha

    4. My mother in law–most memorable speech b/c it included a 70 year old letter that was given to her by her MIL and so on for generations. It includes secrets of how to be a good wife and welcoming the new bride to the family. It was written by my husbands great great grandmother in 1927. We look forward to sharing it with out children on their special day.

I hope to measure up to any one of those toasts :)

I think there has been no better toast than hearing my 2-year-old sister insist that we do “two cups” at every restaurant. And the proper toast was “two cups.” Doesn’t get easier, or cuter, than that.

Keep it short and sweet (like those Double Old Fashioned glasses). A good friend told me that people can best remember things in threes, so my Matron of Honor speech had a sweet anecdote about my best friend, the funny story about how the groom and I initially thought the other was horrible (we’re great now), and a final bit wrapping it up about how they’re perfect compliments for each other now. The speech got rave reviews. I guess speeches are like clusters of items on a bookshelf – threes work well. Thanks, youngsters!

My favorite is from the movie “Hitch:”

“Never cheat, lie, steal, or drink. But, if you cheat, cheat death. If you lie, lie in the arms of someone you love. If you steal, steal away from bad company. And, if you drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.”

At my father’s third wedding (really), my brother was Best Man and gave a toast that included the line, “It’s not every day that a guy gets to give away his father in marriage.”

The best toasts always have at least one funny line. People love an opportunity to laugh.
