Fab Freebie: IKEA, IKEA, IKEA!

*** This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – scroll down to see who won!***

Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.

Ikea Catalog

And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.

Ikea Life Improvement Proje

But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:

  • PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

******************************

You guys are quite impressive with your nearly 11,000 entries. So impressive in fact that Ikea decided to change their plans and give away not just one, not just two, but THREE $350 gift cards. That’s over $1000 in gift cards! Thanks Ikea!

So let’s see who the lucky three winners are according to random.org:

  • Alyssa Allen (who’s Life Improvement Project would include moving her fam somewhere in the world to help the poverty crisis)
  • NEPD (who’d give her wedding florist services away free of charge)
  • Jill (who’d give a year working with the Wildlife Conservation Society)

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Ikea.

Ikea me! I would love to spend a year working with under-privileged children, whether that be in inner-city schools or in women/children’s shelters.

If I could spend a year helping out I would work on raising funds for local rape crisis/domestic violence centers. These organizations run on mostly donations and do soo much work from helping remove victims from their situations to meeting victims at the hospital to go through a SANE examination. They also work on several educational programs and peer educator programs to help get the word out about rape/dv and how to help victims get the resources they need.

If I had a year off I would use it to trap, fix, and release feral cats. It’s such a huge issue and I wish that I could dedicate more time to it!!! Trapping, fixing, and releasing is a much more humane way of dealing with the problem of strays as opposed to just euthanize animals in shelters.

My 6 year old boy is passionate about writing stories and loves learning everything there is know about being a successful author or screenplay writer. I’d love to devote my time to creating some programs in the community that cater to children who share a similar passion. Not every child wants to play sports!

    Wow, IKEA ME please!

Before I had our dog Colby, I wanted a small dog. I started looking at the humane society nearby and quickly found out that the smaller dogs/puppies tend to get snatched up by specialized shelters (usually full of crazies) while the larger, older dogs get left behind. It broke my heart to see these abandoned and “less desirable” dogs wait around for an unlikely future. Colby was a boxer/lab mix rescue and the best dog I could ever ask for. A large-breed shelter would be what I’d do with that year!

I’d start a foundation whose aim is to educate people on the ramifications of drunk driving. Two young women with extremely bright futures were killed by drunk drivers in the span of less than two weeks in Nebraska. This is absolutely unacceptable. I guess what’s been preached for years isn’t getting through to some people. It might be time to try a different tack.

As a grant writer for a company that provides services to nonprofit organizations, I’ve written hundreds of grant proposals for startup and struggling nonprofits across the country that do everything from transitional housing to afterschool programs to creating artificial limbs for orphaned youth in Russia. I would spend the year traveling around to volunteer for the organizations for whom I’ve written grants.

I would spend a year developing a program aimed toward ‘new parent education,’ particularly for those families who are short on resources – perhaps with only one parent in the home, or who are suffering financial difficulties, or who are otherwise incredibly challenged by the pressures of work, family, and living in challenging times.

After my boyfriend and I adopted our dachshund last year, my eyes have been opened to just how many animals are abused, or simply neglected.
