Fab Freebie: Artist’s Block

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This next giveaway came to us as a nursery-themed giveaway, but personally we think Numsi‘s uniquely mod art is suitable for walls of any age. Their contemporary patterns (or custom text) is printed on canvas and then mounted on a 2″ deep birch museum frame to give it some modern dimension and bring some pop to you art collection.

Numsi Text

Plus, since the deep birch plywood cradle makes these blocks of art so sturdy, they can hang on the wall, sit on a shelf or anchor your latest mantlescape. So have some fun browsing their collection of animals and vehicles or patterns and text, because one of you is taking away a $100 credit towards anything on Numsi’s site this week (and the rest of you are taking away a sweet discount).

Numsi Animals Patterns

Here’s how to enter this week:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Numsi.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “BLOCK ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … since we’re referencing writer’s block, why not share a tip that you use to overcome any creativity or productivity block. Do you go someplace special to help you focus? Got an mental exercise to get your juice flowing again? Or do just go do something else and hope the motivation finds you again later.
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, May 19th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: Worldwide
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

    BLOCK ME

Exercise is my best way to overcome writer’s block! Also, since creative writing uses the right side of your brain, get it back in balance by doing something that requires you to use the left side: gardening, cooking (following a recipe, not creating one), painting, cleaning, sewing, scrapbooking, you get the idea. It really works!

    Congrats on baby Clara!

I clean. Concentrating on looking at what you currently have gets you in the mood to make what you’ve got what you want. If that doesn’t work, off to the blogs I go! Looking at other people’s fabulous work definitely helps me hone in on what I’m trying to get across.

Congratulations on that beautiful baby girl!

BLOCK ME! When I have Writers Block, I usually end up walking away from whatever I’m doing and come back later, refreshed. Sometimes I try to poke around the internet, but usually that doesn’t help so I have to physically get up and walk away.

BLOCK ME! I get over writers block by writing down everything that comes to mind. I of course try to focus on the subject matter at hand, but even if I start to wander just getting something on paper really helps. After a period of time, I walk away and work on something else and when I come back to it, I find that I’ve made a lot more progress then I thought.

    BLOCK ME!

I am a children’s book author and branding/advertising copywriter, so I deal with words and blocks of all kinds on a daily basis … So, what unblocks my blocks?

    Thing 1:
Doing something else. Taking a stroll (even around the house if I’m working at home, or to the ladies’ room if I’m on-site with a client), reading or responding to a quick email, checking out a blog or two, giving my mother a call, grabbing a cup of tea, perusing an inspirational children’s book (my fave — “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein), or simply shifting my focus. Without fail, while I’m “busy doing something else”, the inspiration for my previously blocked project makes itself known.

    Thing 2:
“Just do it!” If I’m struggling on a concept or a line, I just say to myself, “Self, you are sitting here, all jumbled up in your own head, wasting a lot of time TRYING to be creative. Stop trying, just BE!” And then I get in front of the computer (or grab a Sharpie and a big piece of paper) and start unloading everything in my brain. I usually wind up with a) a short grocery list, b) a general TO DO list, c) a long list of TERRIBLE HORRIBLE NO GOOD ideas (phew — had to purge those somewhere), and d) a short list that contains “the one”.

What a fun question — here’s to hoping for a new kind of block, real soon!

    BLOCK ME!

When I am having a creativity block (which can be frequently since I am a graphic designer and own a wedding invitation business) I take a step back from what I am working on and do something else. It clears my head and when I go back I often see things that I was totally missing before!

Depending on the task, I usually find some mellow music on my iTunes to get me motivated. Music always helped when I was in Grad School. I’m also a huge list-writer, so crossing things off of a large to-do list feels incredibly rewarding!

Nowadays, I prefer to be surrounded by peace and quiet. I tend to work more efficiently when noises are off – no tv, iPod, etc. Silence is golden. :)
