I’m SO excited about this giveaway!!! We’ve been trying to figure out how to replace our floors on a tight budget…the floor was damaged when we moved in and is getting worse so we have to replace by this summer. Anyway, this giveaway is just what we need!! Keeping my fingers crossed! Any recommendations on inexpensive but durable flooring? Just incase we don’t win, because I wouldn’t say the odds are ever in our favor! A girl can dream though!!

I’m a big fan of the wood-look ceramic available now. Definitely durable and quite pretty!

I have seen floors that looked great that were just stained plywood/luan that was sealed well. As long as your floors are fairly level, it’s not too complicated to install.

We just put in some Allen & Roth laminate from Lowes that was $2/sf…..it looks awesome and doesn’t sound plastic when you walk on it. It already has the foam on it so all it required over concrete was a vapor barrier but when we put the same floor over OSB, it was all set to go.

Leah – don’t underestimate sheet vinyl. It’s a lot better than it used to be. They make lots of nice/realistic patterns these days and its super easy to keep clean. I know it’s not “hot” right now, but we just put some that looks like tile in our new house. I really like them! And no cold tile on the feet.

I’ve also seen wood plank looking vinyl that could probably save you money and would be DIY-friendly.

      Good luck!

Leah, I may be COMPLETELY mistaken, however…if memory serves me correctly, I recall reading or seeing something about awesome sealed cork floors. If the fine folks at YHL have info, this reader hopes they share. I will try to search my history and dig up the link.again, I may be off my rocker, but thought I’d share nonetheless. Good luck!

Previous comment retracted…I think it was on the YHL site that I read about the cork floors a few years back. Guess I thought it was a great idea back then, too.

Hi Leah – If you want real hardwood floors, we recommend looking at the Impressions Blue Ridge Series. It is an exceptional value for a “real” hardwood floor. http://www.impressionshardwoodcollection.com/flooring/blue-ridge-series/

We’ll be happy to send you free wood samples to see if this could be the floor for you, just click on this link, fill out the form, and we’ll get them in the mail to you and tell you where to find an Impressions dealer near you.

I have been desperate to put hard flooring upstairs! I have terrible asthma and get life-threateningly bad bronchitis almost every winter– and dust/dust mites are my #1 trigger. It’s terrifying. While I hold my breath, how did you like the cork floor in your last kitchen? I know you didn’t get to live with them for a super long time but did you have any problems with them or love them? We’re leaning in that direction for our kitchen/dining room and hardwood for the rest of the house (we currently have a mix of tile, laminate, and painted concrete).

We really liked it! I would say it’s a great choice for a shoe-free household but we hear that heels can ding it up, so if you have parties with swanky people in heels you might want to go with hardwood or tile instead.

Was just in Home Depot yesterday lovingly stroking the flooring and dreaming of the day it would be in my home. The cream carpet with stains including dog pee and nail polish really need to go. Who puts carpet in a dining room? Apparently builders in 2001 do.
