Young House Love » Our Second House » Our West Elm Duvet Arrived

Our West Elm Duvet Arrived

Remember the West Elm duvet cover that we ordered on sale last week? It’s here!

West Elm Bedding1

Oh, I guess it would make more sense to show it in our space now:

Duvet On Bed

Of course we’ll be adding in some bolder accent pillows down the road, but we love it. It’s a smidge greener than we expected, but it actually reminds us of the bold blue-green color that we used to paint the back of our built-ins. We filled it with an über-cushy king sized Ikea comforter (we think it’s this one, but we’re not 100% sure since there are so many). And can I just say that we’re so glad we didn’t try to make do with a skimpy full/queen duvet cover for our queen sized bed anymore. The extra fabric means no one has an arm or a leg hanging out in the cold anymore.

And we’re not the only ones who love the new bedding:

Duvet Burger Clara On Bed

Don’t mind the chihuahua foot nibbling that’s going on. It happens a lot. The guy grooms himself like a cat. Here he is looking a bit more presentable:

Duvet Burger On Top

Alhough most of the time you’ll find Burger looking more like this: buried beneath the covers.

Duvet Burger Under Covers

And with the new duvet in place, we’re now itching to paint the walls. We realize that the color of the duvet is reading a bunch of different ways in these pics, but this one’s probably the closest to being accurate. It’s definitely a sort of bold teal color.

Duvet Color Swatches On Bed

We’re currently favoring these swatches (since we don’t want the walls to be the same bold hue as the duvet since that could be a bit much). But we definitely want something darker and smokier than we’re used to. You know, so Ed the bed really pops (along with the sweet crown molding we inherited in this room).

Duvet Paint Swatches

We don’t have a clear winner yet but we’re getting there (we used to have about 15 swatches taped up there, but we’re slowly narrowing them down). Oh and we also considered picking up the goldy-yellow tones in the duvet cover on the walls instead, but decided that we both prefer a cool-ish gray-blue-green shade for our sleeping space over a warm yellowy-gold one. Here’s hoping we get around to making a final decision and painting that huge room sometime soon. Yes, that’s me trying to rally my own troops and get up the energy to tackle the biggest bedroom that we’ve ever painted (14 x 14′ is straight up palatial by our standards).

Did anyone else get their West Elm after-sale order yet? We were surprised at how fast it arrived.

I love Burger! I think he and my little girl Chihuahua, Chicken, would make a perfect match! Chicken is a fan of chewing her feet and knees too!

Wow, that bedding looks even better with a cute baby and cute pup on it!

Good luck with choosing the paint colours, I’m about to re-do the hall, my office, and guestroom. I like the small square one above the light switch…but then it isn’t my house! :)

    Hi there,
I’m from Germany and have a question about the whole duvet/comforter-thing. Here we normaly have a duvet (something warm and fluffy – normally in “single size” so each person has their own duvet) and put a cover around it. Then we sleep under it, with no extra sheet or anything similar between the covered duvet and the sleeper. Therefore the cover has to be washed frequently and people have several sets to change (normally with matching pillow covers – e.g. like this: http://www.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/20145785). How do you do it? I’m just curious…
    Danke und viele Grüße!

We have a sheet between the duvet cover and us, so we wash the sheet regularly (along with the fitted sheet on the mattress and the pillow cases) and occasionally wash the duvet and the cover too (less often since there’s a sheet between us and the duvet).

love the direction you are going in the bedroom. have you considered BM’s gray cashmere? it is slightly gray, blue, and green very soothing for a bedroom.

Can I ask what color the big swatch on the bottom left is? I’m looking for a color for my office walls and I really love that swatch!

I ordered this set from West Elm and they cancelled the order – which I had to find out from calling them after it had been 10 days without a shipping notification.

They look great in your bedroom, though! I can’t wait to see how your new place shapes up!

I am so bummed because I just saw your post about this duvet (I hadn’t been on your blog in a while), went to West Elm, and they are out of Kings :( Do you know if there is any other place that would have this same duvet? I love it!

I’m not sure if you’ve already picked a paint color, but I just wanted to suggest Cliffside Grey by BM. In my opinion it’s the perfect gray blue!

Just saw Ed the bed in Ikea yesterday. Gorgeous! It really stood out against the BM Mozart Blue wall color. Ikea had both a mattress and boxspring in Ed. It looks like you only have a mattress in Ed?

I’m still waiting on my West Elm duvet cover but I did get the email that it shipped.

      Hey Laura,

Yup, Ed has four height levels for the frame, so you can use it with a boxspring or without one. So smart!

Hi I don’t know if its too late for me to ask this question since this post was last week, but here goes. I see that this duvet is 1oo% cotton and 200 thread count, I’m slightly inlove with a pattern on a duvet set that is 100% cotton and 150 thread count what exactly is the diference in thread count? Would you recomend buying it anyway?

      Hey Lilly,

No idea. They say that the higher the thread count, the softer/better/more expensive something is. But we have found that some of the highest thread count sheets that we’ve slept on in hotels have felt exactly the same as our Target sheets at home so we don’t pay that much attention to those things at all. Of course we prefer things to be 100% cotton, but thread count isn’t a big deal to us. If it were us and we liked the pattern/design/price/materials of something, we’d go for it no matter the thread count!

Thanks for answering I think this gives me peace of mind and I do like all pattern, color, price and 100% cotton so I think I’m gonna go for it.

I checked out the Club Aqua color in person and I can’t get my head around how different it looks than on the computer. It looks VERY blue online but very gray in person. Kind of greenish but very gray. It’s pretty but it doesn’t look the same at all. How would you describe it?

p.s. Once you said I could search for my questions by typing in “MelissaG” and it worked now it doesn’t. Is there a good way to find my questions? I always forget where I wrote them! Thanks, love your ideas!!

      Hey Melissa,

We’d describe Carolina Inn Club Aqua as a soft blue-green-gray tone. It may look very gray in the swatch, but in our experience we like colors with gray in the swatch as they look sophisticated on the wall (a lot less gray, but not too pastelly and baby-ish, which is a risk without enough gray). As for questions, maybe just scrolling back for them? Or searching a specific word you used that might be more rare (like “computer” or “describe” since those were in your question?). Otherwise you can remember around the time you submit the question and scroll back to comments around that time. Hope it helps!

    Question about Burgers nails…

How has your duvet cover held up to any potential nail snags? I ask bc I have a little dog and 2 cats, and anything shiney or fancy doesn’t stand a chance against my pets. I have had target fieldcrest covers and they do snag but aren’t obvious so I’ve always loved them (maybe it’s the pattern, maybe its the material?) Do you notice your cover to be average or better at hiding any potential snags?

It’s just an 100% cotton cover so it doesn’t get snagged or anything. Burger has tiny pointy nails but they never snag our new duvet (or the old 100% cotton one we had from West Elm for the past 4+ years). Hope it helps!

    Hi John and Sherry-

What are you going to do regarding your duvet when summer comes?

Do you keep your house cool enough that sleeping under a duvet is still comfortable? Do you keep the duvet on ‘for looks’ and then take it off the bed before you go to sleep? Or do you change it out for a lighter blanket or coverlet during the summer months?

If you go the light-blanket route, any good suggestions about where to find stylish, not-too-expensive ones?

I ask because I have a duvet cover right now that I LOVE, but our down comforter is way too hot for my husband and I to sleep under during the summer.

    Thanks for any tips!
    Jessica

We have a year-round comforter inside of our duvet from Ikea (it’s meant to work in winter and summer and it really does the trick and isn’t too hot). So we sleep with our bed made the same way year round (no comforter switcheroo or flannel sheets). What usually happens in the summer is that John kicks off the covers and we obviously sleep with lighter clothing on (and run a fan), but I stay under the covers year round (I’d much rather be warm than cold). Maybe checking out Ikea (or even TJ Maxx or Target or Marshalls or HomeGoods or Bed Bath & Beyond) for a less heavy comforter or even a light-blanket would work without costing an arm and a leg? Good luck!

Did you turn it 90 degrees? We put ours wide-ways on the bed so it’s the right length and just drapes over the sides of the bed nicely (and gives us more covers that way when we sleep). Hope it helps!

It’s Glidden’s Gentle Tide. They discontinued it but they can look up the formula on the computer and whip you up a batch if you ask the paint pros at the desk. Good luck!

We decided to simplify the bedroom a bit and just go with a white bedspread, so this one is now just being stored in the playroom. We’re hoping we’ll find a use for it soon!

I love the fact that you choose your duvet set first of all and then start decorating your place to match the bedding! A true bed fan I think.
