Young House Love » Random » A Green HomeGoods Lamp

A Green HomeGoods Lamp

Seeing as this fun little $22 lamp from HomeGoods is one of our favorite Sue The Napkin colors, which we plan to use as our whole house color inspiration (see them all here) I had to make it mine. It’s really cute in person, but it’s kinda ugly with the paneling behind it. Haha. Sorry ’bout that.

New Lamp 1

I knew it would look all purty when it’s glowing – and cast lots of fun shadows on the wall. You know, like this:

New Lamp 2

Except try to imagine it without the soul crushing wood paneling. Slowly but surely we’re working up the energy to tackle the kitchen. Every day that I have to stare at that paneling gets me one day closer to running to the store for primer.

Anyway back to our new lamp and the title of this post. This picture explains it all:

New Lamp Dance Party

That’s right. My new lamp gives me disco fever. I love it. And it’s Friday. Let’s dance. Off to learn some moves from the adorable Finnish guy who made this How To Disco Dance video:

I love Home Goods! So much so that I can only go when I know I have money to spend. It’s impossible for me to leave without something in my hands! I was dropping by to let you know that I’ve given you the Stylish Blogger Award, for all the great tips and ideas I’ve stolen, um, borrowed from you. If you want to check it out you can stop by my blog here.

Love the lamp! The color is one of my favorites, it’s actually very close to the color of my kitchen wall. I’m a huge fan of West Elm and saw these vases recently…you might be interested? http://www.westelm.com/products/hive-vases-c046/?pkey=cvases-objects

I have this lamp in turquoise and I LOVE IT! It is made well and looks like it costs much more than $22.00.

Ours sits on the floor where it serves as a nightlight between the living room, nook and kitchen. We leave it on all of the time, but it is prettiest at night!

(Funky cool during the day but pretty, pretty at night.)

P.S. I just bought a porcelain white Bassett Hound from Z Gallerie in honor of you! Decorating by osmosis!

    Hello Sherry and John!
My name is Simone, I´m Brazilian and since last october I’ve been reading your posts and getting impressed with your DIY’s!
My husband and I have worked on our place too, and it’s always very inspiring to check out your ideas and tips. Our reality is completely different, we don´t have shops like Ikea, and our version of Home Depot is always expensive. That makes us every day more creative, cause we have to transform and think a lot to keep on the budget!! But it still works!!
    Congrats for your job!!
    Big hug,
    Simone

    Hi John and Sherry,
Am loving everything you’ve done with the new place. I have a question about the NO-VOC paint you use. Does using this type of paint allow you to paint with Clara in the house and not worry about fumes of any kind? I have a baby the same age and desperately want to get some painting done. Where do you find this paint and is Olympic the only brand of its kind? (I’m in Canada, so it is sometimes a little tricky to find all the same products you guys use)
    Thanks!
    Megan

Olympic and Mythic are the only two paints that we know of that are totally no-VOC (including the colorants they add when they custom mix them). We get Olympic at Lowe’s and Mythic at a small local store so maybe just check out their sites to see where they’re sold in your area? We still run fans, crack windows, and keep Clara in another room (we switch off watching her or paint other rooms while she naps in her nursery) just to be even more careful. Hope it helps!

Of course the lamp is thumbs up but I’m ready to arrange a painting swarm to cover that hideous panelling if I have to see it one more time! I honestly don’t know how you do it. 1977 is calling. Please give it back. : )

    Hi!
My husband and I are trying to “grow up” our style after 4 years of marriage and 8 years out of our “college dorm room style”…so much of a mismatch I find I need a filter to help me make decisions about what to keep, what to throw away, and what to re-purpose!
Can you do a post on how to find your own “personal Sue the Napkin”? I am envious of how your napkin provides you with a consistent anchor with which to make design decisions….I know you have alot of posts on finding personal style, I would love to see them pulled together in a big “Find your Sue” post!
    Love you guys!

Sure, we can add that to our (admittedly very long) post request list. The short answer would just be to look for one item that inspires you (from a painting to a sweater or a room in a magazine) and just go back to it from time to time to see if you’re on track. We have some other posts about finding inspiration on our Projects page (in our Where To Start category and our Decorating Lessons category) so those will hopefully help. Good luck!

    hi sherry!

this is something i’ve been meaning to ask you for quite some time. my new house has wooden casings and ledges on every window. i think i mentioned that before and was pretty ticked about it so you may remember my ranting :)

anyway, it’s a thick solid knotty pine, stained in a honey colour. i hate it. i mean, it’s beautiful in it’s own way, i guess. the problem is when you start bringing more and more wooden furniture into the house, it ends up looking all mismatched and the window ledges really stand out.

so….i’d like to paint them. i don’t have a very steady hand. i’m wondering if it is possible to spray paint them. and if you would recommend it. i want a very flat no sheen paint that won’t chip. do you think this might work for me?

We would definitely recommend just using green Frog Tape from Home Depot to tape things off and then applying paint with a brush. You’ll want to use oil-based primer followed by latex semi-gloss interior paint for the best results. Good luck!

do i need to sand it first? it’s solid wood, stained, with a bit of gleam to it.

    • YoungHouseLove says

      March 6, 2011 at 10:58 pm

The oil-based primer should help the paint stick really well, but it can’t hurt to give it a good sanding if you’d like! You can also test an area without sanding and see how it goes. Good luck!

You two are an adorable couple, but what is up with all the round mirrors in your house?
    Round mirror over Clara’s crib?
Round mirror over guest bedroom bed?
    Round mirror over the fireplace?

    Just curious………

They tickle our fancy I guess. Wish we had a more scientific answer, but maybe we just like mixing in some curves with all the square and rectangular windows and doors. Even the mantel and the fireplace and the crib and the guest bed have right angles, so round mirrors seem to add softness and counterbalance things. Plus mirrors in general reflect light – which is always a bonus in our book – so I like at least one in every room for “sparkle.”

This lamp just found me at Marshall’s ($29.99). I love it and it goes with our 1954 retroee house. However, when I put in the bulb & turned it on, it didn’t reflect all those cool disco dots like yours did. And I figured out why..the wall behind it is light beige vs. dark. I still love it however but you might have the same situation once you paint if it’s a light color.

It might also be the bulb. If you put a clear one in (instead of an opaque white one) you’ll get tons of shadows!

I TOTALLY bought that same lamp in white about 2 weeks ago at TJMaxx! I got super excited when I saw that you had one too! I have a polka dotted guest room and when I saw the lamp I had to get it. I don’t have a picture of it in the room yet, but you can see the rest of the room at http://kcashion.blogspot.com/2011/01/different-look-around-house.html. I thought is was the perfect lamp for the theme I have going (yes I love polka dots)!
