Seeing as this fun little $22 lamp from HomeGoods is one of our favorite Sue The Napkin colors, which we plan to use as our whole house color inspiration (see them all here) I had to make it mine. It’s really cute in person, but it’s kinda ugly with the paneling behind it. Haha. Sorry ’bout that.
I knew it would look all purty when it’s glowing – and cast lots of fun shadows on the wall. You know, like this:
Except try to imagine it without the soul crushing wood paneling. Slowly but surely we’re working up the energy to tackle the kitchen. Every day that I have to stare at that paneling gets me one day closer to running to the store for primer.
Anyway back to our new lamp and the title of this post. This picture explains it all:
That’s right. My new lamp gives me disco fever. I love it. And it’s Friday. Let’s dance. Off to learn some moves from the adorable Finnish guy who made this How To Disco Dance video:
Very retro. Very Friday! I think it’s a super cute little accessory! I’d take my time with that kitchen also if it were me!
I love it! It’s adorable, and the crazy shadows it throws makes it even more fun. Happy Friday!
Let me just say how excited I am for you to paint the kitchen. No really, I think about it daily. Just can’t wait!
This may be my most favorite post ever!!! Love the How To video! And I absolutely adore!!! that lamp! I hope I am able to find one! I like having my own dance parties in my living room and now that I have this video, I must have this lamp!!!
Sherry you crack me up!
The lamp is super cute and fun. Though, I think it’s a little less disco fever and more Grey Brady in his own attic bedroom… Does anyone else love the Brady Bunch?
Haha, so true. It’s the hip version of a lava lamp. Haha.
xo,
s
Oops, I meant GREG not Grey… Too early for me.
Haha, I didn’t even notice that. My eye filled it in with Greg and it all made sense. Haha.
xo,
s
Did you ever knoooooow that you’re my heeeeerooooo…for bringing up Greg’s own attic bedroom. That’s exactly where my mind went to. What a groovy scene.
Aw, comment soul mates. The best kind.
That’s too funny, Kelly. Gotta love the Bradys!
What a cool looking lamp! You guys are so great at finding awesome stuff that other people might overlook. I love it!
Groovy!
Love it!
I really like the lamp – I was a little weary at first but after seeing it lit up I really like it! I wonder if it comes in any different colors. My hubby and I are just renting a house for now while saving up for our first home and I can’t wait to buy one (hopefully in the next 6 months) so we can start decorating!
We saw one in orange and one in white too! At 22 bucks it’s awesome. And it’s ceramic and not plastic so it looks expensive!
xo,
s
I found one at Marshalls in light blue.
Hilarious! I used to have a similar lamp from IKEA and loved it in my office. That color is my current obsession. I really need to be stopped. :)
Yep, it’s lovely! Nice score. :-)
This is so fun! I love the bold color choices you two are making. I was just telling my husband that we need to find our own Sue the napkin that has a color palate we love.
Yesterday the music died, but today you got your groove back (Disco style). Nice to know that everything is back to normal.
Haha it’s true. I get over things pretty fast. Haha.

that video has made my day. and not only the Finns but also our German friends can be proud of having given us the music that went with the final dance. :-)
A few things:
1) Love the lamp! I bet Clara would love that in her room too.
2) I was on mute initially since I am working. I turned on the sound and the effect is still the same since he is speaking …hmmm…do Finnish people speak Finnish? I have no idea.
3) You’d think they would be dressed more “fun” for teaching DISCO. As it is, they could be back up dancers on Lawrence Welk (do you know who Lawrence Welk is or am I showing my age?)!
Yes, Finnish people speak Finnish. And I think that we as a nation would rather forget this episode was ever filmed even if it is four decades ago or so… ;)
I wouldn’t want to forget that video, I think it’s fun and also an accurate portrayal of the time when it was filmed: people took (and some maybe still take) teaching and learning something fun very seriously :-) Even disco!
I love the lamp and how it changes the atmosphere of the room when the rest of the room is dark…
@ Ilona–
Is this video actually from another time, or does it instead portray a group of Baby Boomers who still like the night life? :P
And maybe that’s what YHL needs for the room: some gold lamé curtains and the occasional pompadour. You could make that party happen before the panel paint comes out; please include pictures…
I’m thinking that the accurate color description is “peuce.” I love it, though! Great color and shape.
I know what you mean about being surrounded (in one room or an entire house) by something distastful. You don’t *get used to it*… you get more and more ready to FIX it!!
Color-wise for the kitchen, are you thinking the same(ish) color scheme as your previous house? (I know Sue is influencing your choices, but I doubt you’re going with peuce-colored cabinets…)
I’m thinking of something pretty bright for the kitchen. Not ready to say it out loud just yet, but since the adjoined hallway, office, dining room, and living room are going to be that soft gray color I thought the big open kitchen that’s right smack in the middle of them could use a splash of color (with white cabinets of course to keep it from getting too circus-y). Who knows where we’ll end up though…
xo,
s
Karen I think you’re thinking Chartreuse. Puce is in the red family. They are both lovely colors that I adore!
I LOVE the idea of painting the kitchen a pop of color.
Slightly related question – when you paint the dining room gray, are you going to leave the bookcases white or paint them gray as well?
They’ll stay white like the trim. They just look great with the white and teal against each other. Plus repainting them would be a bear. Haha.
xo,
s
I totally understand. It’s sort of like when you tell friends and family what you plan to name your baby and their response is like, “Eww! Really?”
You probably have a great vision in mind, but it’s hard to relate in words. I’m sure it will be great — everything you’ve done so far is nothing-short-of-amazing.
You’re so sweet. Really. I heart you Karen.
xo,
s
Love it. Saw it recently at Home Goods, but I couldn’t think of any place for it in my house.
So where will this lovely find a home in your home? Will it stay in the Kitchen?
I’m thinking it would look really cute in the playroom. And maybe even eventually in Clara’s nursery once she’s bigger and we don’t need the changing pad to take up half of her dresser. It’ll probably get around. Hah.
xo,
s
He matches Lumiere!
https://www.younghouselove.com/2010/09/jack-be-nimble/
Aw Lumiere! I almost forgot about him. He’s stuffed into the playroom with all of our yet-to-be-dealt-with stuff. Hope he has some nice vase and candlestick friends to cavort with back there.
xo,

Any idea of what color y’all will be painting the paneling?
I was cracking up at the little disco guy, especially that move he was doing right when the music started.
We’re thinking of something bright and happy but we’re not sold enough to say it out loud just yet- haha. Since the adjoining rooms around the kitchen (the dining room, office, living room, and hallway) will all be a soft gray, we think a pop of color in the middle could be fun…
xo,
s
I think you could totally pull off something bold! If you need some inspiration, I’ve been loving this teal and chartuese kitchen redo. http://www.sawdustandembryos.com/search/label/Kitchen
I think with the paneling it just makes it super retro. I mean what is more disco than paneling and avocado green (ok- its way prettier than avocado green!). For the 8,876,995th time I wish we had Home Goods. Because I WANT this lamp! :)
You have my deepest sympathy. My life just wouldn’t be complete without Home Goods.
;)
I feel your pain! The closest Home Goods to me is about 4 hours. :(
Thank you Angela. It is a hard road I have to walk. We have TJ Max but let’s face it- it is NOT Home Goods. Also- the nearest Ikea is 6 hours. Ok, I am depressing myself.
Love the lamp!
Totally diggin it.
You are too funny sista.
That was such a great video! He was so serious and academic about the whole thing. Super cute. I especially loved his moves at 3:13. haha! :)
Haha, everyone go to 3:13 and review them. Off to do that…
xo,
s
OMG….3:13 just about made me squirt Pepsi through my nose!
What do you call that!?!?!?! I haven’t seen moves like that since Sanford and Son!
I saw that lamp last week at Homegoods in Lex, KY and really wanted it!! (Especially given the price.) I decided I needed a taller version that I could set in the floor. I’m glad you guys snagged one! I like when great pieces find good homes. :)
Oh, I LOVE this!!! It would be awesome in my son’s room. You guys are so inspirational. I finally realized I didn’t have to HATE my house. So I’ve been painting and paring down and finding pieces I really love. It is soooo much fun! I’m off tot he HomeGoods website!
friends of mine have that exact lamp in their nursery… It looked so perfect in there :)
Clara’s going to love this, guaranteed. And you guys do lots of happy dances, so you might as well have proper lighting. :)
http://www.wom-mom.com
I have been eyeing that at TJMaxx. They had it in that green and in light blue. I really like it, just not sure I have anywhere to put it!
I’m so laughing at that video!!! SOOOO hilarious!! Love the lamp, too…has me looking around my house for a place to put one…hmm…
I bought this exact same lamp at HG a few months back and I LOVE it! It shines from the living room in the evenings out to the street and makes such a fun display through the big picture window. Enjoy!
Are you painting the panelling? My office is small and pannelled in natural pine panelling with a built in desk/closet that was made with the same panelling. I am nervous about painting the wood, but I hate it!! Too lodgey looking for me. But I am scared to paint wood as we just spent several years refinishing the oak built ins in our dining room and are now getting ready to install the new 6 in oak base board. I’m afraid i will regret it. Help!
Yup we’re gonna paint it. We painted the paneling in our last house and after 4+ years of living with it we didn’t regret it once. It really opened up the room! You can check out the tab under our blog header that says “House Tour” and click the button that says “Our First House” and scroll down to see what a difference it made in our once-dark-and-gloomy den!

You guys are almost ready to open a night club between this new lamp and the fantastic pendant in your bedroom! Can’t wait to see what you do with all that paneling.
I love that lamp!!
All you need to do it put it on some sort of rotating stand/base so the light moves like a disco ball and you’re set! Theme party? Halloween? Kids birthday parties? I can just picture a bunch of 6 year olds getting their disco on to that lamp fueled by cupcakes.
Disco + cupcakes = the best time ever.
xo,
s
When I read this comment, I read “that lamp fueled by cupcakes”! Which might be brilliant… :)
Somebody invent that stat.

Just a warning here from someone who’s “been there, done that”. DON’T PAINT THE PANELING. Just pull it out and start over and put up drywall. Trust. me. I wanted a lighter, brighter, color in my kitchen, too. It took me 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, and destroyed all the brushes and rollers that came near it. Oh, and then it periodically needs touching up, because the knots seems to just absorb the paint over time. Seriously, just take it down – you’ll thank me!
We did it in our last house. Maybe every experience is different? Ours took one coat of primer and one coat of paint (and after four years we didn’t have any bleed through thanks to the oil-based primer we used- although we’ve heard latex isn’t as good about that).
xo
s
hmmm ~ I painted my dark ugly paneling ~ 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of well….it’s kind of the color of YHL’s comment box :) No bleeding thru and no touchups and it’s been at least 3 years….and I used latex paint.
Latex paint is a-ok, it’s usually the omission of oil-based primer that contributes to bleed through. So maybe you used something like Kilz oil-based primer with latex paint and it all worked out swimmingly? That’s what we did and we had awesome luck with it. Either way, so glad it still looks awesome three years out. Woot!

s
I really want to paint the paneling in my basement. It’s not dark paneling though, it’s like a light greyish/blue color. Nice color actually, but it’s still paneling (knots and shading to make it look like real wood).
Do you think I need to use an oil-based primer or is it not as important since the paneling isn’t dark with risk of bleed through?
I would never recommend skipping it. Better safe than sorry for sure!

Woah….polyester overload at 8:30 in the morning! I loved the video – though I thought there would be more “buckle-the-seat-belt” moves ala Saturday Night Fever…I love how serious his partner is about Disco – you can tell she’s got the fever ;)
That lamp is so freakin’ cute that as soon as I get dressed for the day I intend to go get one (in white – boring I know, but, it will seem less so when we turn it on and start our disco party…) Thanks for sharing! :)
I was walking around with a lamp just like that in Marshalls about 2 weeks ago, but my husband made me put it back because I couldn’t come up with a place to put it in the house. :(
I really want to go back to the store and see if they still have it .. if they do it would be fate right?
Totally fate. For sure. Good luck!
xo,
s
HILARIOUS! Love it! You made my Friday with that video!
I definitely vote for the apple/kiwi green color in the kitchen! It would tie in the leather chairs you hope to get for the dining room and look fabulous!!
I agree, this light is going to look so much better on different walls. The colors of Sue the napkin are really coming together. It’s exciting to see even how the small purchases will help tie the whole idea together.
You are so funny!!!
How great is it that you have the perfect dancefloor in your living room? WOOD PARQUET FTW!
I only watched a few seconds of that video and I loved it. The rhythmic knee bending was FANTASTIC.
And that lamp is super cute. Why must you always make me want to go shopping?
And comment of the day goes to Elizabeth for including “Wood Parquet FTW!”
xo,
s
what is FTW?
FTW = For the win.
I just love winning. And when the parquet floor wins I’m even more ecstatic. Haha.
x
WOO HOO! (Now doing the Saturday Night Fever finger pointing moves.)
Wood Parquet & Charlie Sheen…Winner.Winner.Winner
Seriously. It’s like a trifecta.
xo,
s
Love the lamp too… reminds me of the J. Schatz Egg Lamps which are so cool and I would love one… but at $135 they’re out of my price range. This one, however, VERY affordable!
http://www.jschatz.com/egglamps/stareggnightlights.html
Love it! Let the hunt begin for the orange one that would look awesome in my spare room/walk in closet/creative crafting station. It will be the perfect birthday present to myself and I’m going to study that video to brush up on my moves for the club!
Oooh love the reflections but they would without a doubt freak out my cats. But I bet Clara would love the planetarium effect!
The child is obsessed. She tries to “catch” them- it’s hilarious.

Okay I am totally rushing out to get this. It’s perfect for our den where we have our “Just Dance” parties on our Wii. Now who’s the dork? And I don’t care what anyone says–I love the stuff you all do, keep up the good work!
Love the lamp! I saw it at my TJMaxx in a pretty Tiffany blue but since I don’t have a place for it, it stayed at the store :( The shadows are so happy though!
Wow–SOLD. I’m totally going to Home Goods tonight to look for a lamp. Without the light I was like, eh, cute, but with the light, ZING! Love it.
I seriously cannot believe you two had the guts to take on a house with that much paneling! As my fiance and I were home searching a couple of years ago, we were out the door faster than lightning when we saw panel-covered walls. But I am also inspired that you are pulling it together, and it’s really looking good! I can’t wait to see the final product!
Love all your fun new lights in the house… first New Years… Now Disco… Happy Friday!
Cute lamp!
The dance instructor isn’t dancing to the beat of the music when it comes on. Right? Maybe it’s the Finnish beat. (My husband calls me the beat nazi when we go dancing. Must be all those years of marching band.)
Very cute! I love HomeGoods.
