A Green HomeGoods Lamp

Seeing as this fun little $22 lamp from HomeGoods is one of our favorite Sue The Napkin colors, which we plan to use as our whole house color inspiration (see them all here) I had to make it mine. It’s really cute in person, but it’s kinda ugly with the paneling behind it. Haha. Sorry ’bout that.

New Lamp 1

I knew it would look all purty when it’s glowing – and cast lots of fun shadows on the wall. You know, like this:

New Lamp 2

Except try to imagine it without the soul crushing wood paneling. Slowly but surely we’re working up the energy to tackle the kitchen. Every day that I have to stare at that paneling gets me one day closer to running to the store for primer.

Anyway back to our new lamp and the title of this post. This picture explains it all:

New Lamp Dance Party

That’s right. My new lamp gives me disco fever. I love it. And it’s Friday. Let’s dance. Off to learn some moves from the adorable Finnish guy who made this How To Disco Dance video:

If that’s real pine paneling, I had the same stuff in my office (former sun room) probably from the same era. If I may make a suggestion, when you prime skip straight to the oil primer and wear a respirator (or at least test a latex primer/paint combo before you commit). I know you hate the harsh paints, but I’d love to save you some trouble. I used a premium latex primer and then BM paint and let it sit for two weeks, within a week or so the yellowing started to come through again. I had to re-prime with oil to cut the old stain from coming through.

I know you guys are more of 6-coats people, but doing that just makes it all the more likely that you’ll have peeling and flaking paint down the line. Or will leave the next owner in the boat we’re in with trim that has so much paint the beautiful details of the moldings can hardly be seen anymore. Maybe it’s not such a big deal, if you’re planning to demo these walls anyway, but I just wish someone suggested to our home’s previous owners to go easy on the number of coats of paint :)

You’re totally right! We know we have no choice but to use nasty oil-based primer (and are already planning how we can keep Clara clear of that process) so it might be a little while til we get there, but we know it’s the only way to go! It worked so well in our last house it’s the only method we’ll use. And we love that we can seal the oil-based primer with no-VOC latex paint, so it’ll hopefully only be super fumey and gross during the priming process instead of for the long haul.

Yup- have definitely been thinking (watching your videos of Clara eating, etc) that y’all have to be getting sick of that wood paneling. Scratch that “getting”- y’all have to BE sick of that wood paneling. It’s just kind of a drag right now. But it’s going to be a spectacular YHL transformation- I can just feel it! Can’t wait!

Our entire basement has solid wood paneling. It took me SIX MONTHS to get up enough strength and will to prime and paint it! :) So I can totally relate. But, every time I walk downstairs now, seeing all that freshly painting paneling puts a big ol’ smile on my face! :)

Cute lamp! Gotta heart Home Goods. I love the idea of something like this, but I have no idea where I would put it… I need to start incorporating more fun things into our house, I think. Stat.

So, question: Sorry if you’re already addressed this, but did you say awhile back you’ll be adding a garden or something along those lines in your backyard? I’d love to hear more about that side of things as the seasons are changing… :) My hubs and I are contemplating raised beds this year, which I’m absolutely psyched about, but first I need to enroll in gardening 101. Maybe i’m jumping the gun, but I had to ask! :)

Yup, at some point we’d love to tackle tons of yard work. An edible garden with veggies and fruit, a cutting garden with herbs, some annuals, some perennials, some beds around the front of the house, some trees to cut back, etc. So much to do! But we like to take our time with landscaping- well with house stuff in general. If we rush through that stuff it just feels like we slapped things together so we like to think things through and take it one step at a time. Of course we’ll share all the details as we go though!

I always have disco fever. Seriously, it must take a lot of patience to have all of these projects. Our new house (moving in about a month) needs loads of help, and I think it’s going to drive me crazy that we can’t do everything at once. I mean, that’s the fun of it THE ANTICIPATION, but still, you gotta live in it ya know?

So are you guys planing on white washing or painting the panels? both take priming so its had to know what tricks you have up your sleeves. Either way ANYTHING would look better then those walls. I was feeling a little 70’s fever with all the paneling and disco. and that nausea in a bad way but I know the lighting will be a fun light show once its all done. I bet Clara loves it already :)

We’re planning to paint them. Sort of a fun bright color we think. With white cabinets. Since the other adjoining rooms have light gray on the walls, we figure a colorful kitchen in the middle of the house could be fun.

I’ve never actually been to HomeGoods, I’m originally from Texas and we didn’t have the chain there. Since living in Chicago, I’ve never gone because I didn’t know what the store was. But that lamp is so funky and unique! I’m inspired to pay a visit… perhaps this weekend!
