Why We Returned Our Mail-Order Foam Mattress

If you’ve been anywhere near the internet in the last couple of years, you’re probably well aware of a new generation of mail-order mattresses: Casper. Leesa. Tuft & Needle (just to name a few). They’re these affordable foam mattresses that ship straight to your door, magically unfurl on your bed, and promise an improved night’s sleep or your money back. Having been bombarded with that message for months (years?) we decided to jump on the bandwagon… but quickly second-guessed our decision. And so the “Is this The One?” mattress spiral was born. Let me preface this by saying that I’ve been hesitant to write this post. We generally don’t like to spotlight products that don’t

#33: In Pursuit Of Buying Less & Doing More

On this week’s podcast, we hear what it’s really like to downsize thanks to Dana and Steve Miller from the blog House*Tweaking, who moved to a smaller home – while their family was getting bigger, no less! – and opened up about how it helped them achieve their financial and family goals (but isn’t always all roses). We also share a very strange morning we spent together, along with debating when you should buy a tool versus renting one. Plus Sherry shares her favorite quick trick for dents & scratches in wood furniture. You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio – or listen to it below! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos that we referenced. Note: If you’re

How To Make Long Reclaimed Wood Shelves

Long ago we promised more details about how we made the reclaimed wood shelves that we hung as part of our big kitchen remodel, so we’re finally back with every last measurement, stain method, and hanging tip. We hadn’t originally planned to put shelves there, but after our initial idea to display a large piece of art fell flat (literally – it felt like that wall needed more dimension) we turned our attention to shelves. Besides adding some storage for things in heavy rotation like drinking glasses (if you cycle through things fast enough they don’t have time to get dusty), Sherry has never met a shelf didn’t have fun accessorizing. Also, plants. Gotta love plants. These shiny

#32: The Stuff In Our House We Don’t Show You

It’s official: Episode #32 of Young House Love Has A Podcast is officially here, and these are the official show notes. On this week’s episode a listener asked about the strange habits or odd things you might uncover in our house, and we jumped at the chance to pull back the curtain and call each other out: from the unusual supply that John keeps in the office to the confounding items you might find sitting on our couch and in our kitchen drawers. Plus, a local realtor puts the kibosh on Sherry’s fantasy bathroom renovation and John shares a popular home robot that sadly didn’t live up to our expectations. You can download this (very official) episode from iTunes, Google

How We Picked Our Pink House Color

Picking paint isn’t always easy, and boy did we have a hard time deciding on a beach house color. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you probably saw us share a bunch of photoshopped options a few weeks ago that flashed by, slideshow-style, like this: And if you listen to our podcast, you’ve heard all about the house colors next door and the other factors that need to be taken into account (like not wanting to paint our original wood door, for example). All of that’s in Episode #28, which you can play below to get all caught up. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you might have to click through to the post to

#31: We Picked A Beach House Color (In The Weirdest Way)

Phew, you survived the treacherous journey through the worldwide web to find yourself here, at the show notes for Episode #31 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. On this week’s episode, we didn’t find love in a hopeless place, but we found a beach house color in a surprising one. Yes, several weeks, multiple test swatches, and 1,500 comments later, we’ve finally settled on a color for our beach house’s exterior – and the decision came from one of the most random places! Plus, we talk to blogger, designer, and Domino contributor Jenny Komenda about the challenges of running a design business and what decor trends she’s noticing in the new year. And we’re digging some pretty

Beach House Style Inspiration

We’re nothing if not house optimists, so even as our our beach house comes apart (literally, we have mold and termite damage and bad wiring and no HVAC and a failing foundation and pretty much all of the other not-ideal things that necessitate carefully rebuilding a lot of it) we’ve learned that sometimes you just gotta focus on the fun exciting home-reno aspects to make it through the highly unglamorous and grimace-inducing ones. We’ll update you on our rebuilding progress soon (it’s pretty slow-going), but today we’re swinging open our brains and sharing the much-more-fun-to-think-about beach house style ideas that are bouncing around in there. Because even if there seem to be a million steps between now and the

#30: How Minimalism Almost Grinched Our Christmas

Happy 2017 everyone! Shall we ring in the new year with some show notes for Episode #30 of Young House Love Has A Podcast? On this week’s episode, we asked you to call in with your house-related resolutions for 2017, and boy did you guys deliver! So we’re playing some of our favorite listener voicemails and sharing what home-related changes we’re hoping to implement in the coming year. Plus, we share why we were giving all of the presents under the tree some serious side eye on the night before Christmas, how we found something burning in our son’s bedroom, and we take a look at what trends Pinterest is projecting will be big in 2017.

2016 Rewind: Our Favorite Makeovers & Projects Of The Year

2016 was an interesting year, to say the least. Between starting a podcast, buying a beach house, creating a coloring book, and taking on various projects around here and beyond, well, there were lots of firsts. So we thought we’d end 2016 with a quick recap of the year’s highlights. Topping the list as our most memorable room makeover was this speedy space-themed bedroom update that we did for a local family whose young son Mason passed away suddenly (the bedroom that he shared with his older brother Hudson needed a refresh so that Hudson could work towards sleeping in there again). We’ve stayed connected to the family via Facebook, so they’ve been on our minds frequently throughout the year, and

Making DIY Ornaments With Kid Art

You know we like to make ornaments (there’s a nice collection of others that we’ve whipped up over the years at the end of this post) so we’re just dropping by to share the ones we made this year. You know, for any other jonesing-to-eat-all-the-cookies-and-make-all-the-ornaments folks out there. And these might go down as the easiest grandparent gifts ever (masterpieces by their favorite little ones + a sweet and personal ornament = grandparent gift jackpot). They’re so cute you’ll definitely want to make some for your own tree while you’re at it. Plus they only cost around a dollar or two (and take ten minutes or so) to make, which is definitely key when Christmas is less than a

#29: An Unexpected Con To Calling In A Pro

Happy Holidays everyone! We got you a little something to celebrate. It’s the show notes for Episode #29 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. On this week’s episode we talked about hiring out renovation work in your home. Specifically, that it can be exciting and awesome.. and sometimes it can be deflating and frustrating… which was the case recently for us. So we’re sharing some red flags to look out for and some tips to try to avoid that issue along with a few more ways that we’ve cut down on holiday stress (and gift excess). Plus we dive into our favorite design books, dig up John’s old journal, and enjoy some holiday tunes from a very special

Making A Painted Christmas House Village

You guys know I like ceramic things. And miniature anything is 100% cuter than something that’s normal-sized (little sliders vs cheeseburgers for example). So it was only a matter of time before this happened. Let’s make a little Christmas village, shall we? It all started with some secondhand tea light holders that are meant to glow if you put little candles inside (some just have tiny holes for a string of lights to poke through instead). I’ve always stopped to stare at these things at thrift stores, because how much fun does it sound to repaint the old tired and chipped ones and bring them back to life in the form of a happy little Christmas town?! This past weekend I was trolling
