A Porch Peek

Tomorrow’s the big day when we finally get to reveal our porch makeover thanks to Better Homes & Gardens and Home Depot’s 48-Hour Challenge. But since you guys have been so patient we decided to throw you a bone in the form of a little teaser photo (or two) to tide you over for the big before and after fest tomorrow.

First we’ll introduce you to our little frog friend that we discovered in the home stretch of the porch painting project. Check out those out of focus stripes behind him.

That’s all you get.  But rest assured that you’re in for a barrage of after pictures tomorrow. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Looks great! Is that a hosta in the smaller planter? You’ll want to move that to a permanent spot soon since those grow like crazy (and are beautiful to boot!). Can’t wait for the big reveal!

      Hey Heather S,

Yes, that is a hosta in the smaller planter. He gets a good amount of sun and water so our plan is to see how he does in the pot and of course transplant him if he’s struggling. We just loved the color and the graphic lines that he added to the porch! Plus we’ve totally mowed over hostas and they’ve come right back so we’re hoping he’s tough enough for the job!

      xoxo,
      Sherry

I have a few gallons of paint sitting in my garage that I bought to use on my porch and then chickened out. Your floors might just inspire me to take the plunge!

My biggest concern with painting was that the patio would be slippery (especially when wet.) Is it slippery? Have you walked on it wet yet? Did you use Skids or mix your paint with sand? It looks incredible but I’m a bit worried – especially since our patio holds a hot tub!

    Thanks,
    Alexis

Alexis- We would actually caution you against using any old paint on the floor! We did a bit of research and decided to go with porch and floor paint in a flat finish which is specifically made to hold up extremely well under lots of foot traffic without being glossy and slippery. Stay tuned for a whole porch painting tutorial (coming after the big reveal) for all the details!

Kelly Jo- The leafy plant in the smaller pot is called a “hosta” and the yellow flowering plant in the bigger pot didn’t have an info card but the sign in front of it called it a “Sweet Jo” and said it liked partial shade and containers… which was good enough for us! If anyone recognizes it or knows of another name for it feel free to chime in!

Jessica- Remember the inspiration binder full of clear sleeves that hold tear sheets from magazines that we love (mentioned in this recent post)? In the front of that binder is actually where we keep a sheet of paper with all of the paint chips for our entire house (inside and out) taped onto it (seeing them all together helps us keep the palette consistent- and we also label each one and where it is in the house, ex: Gentle Tide by Glidden- kitchen walls, master bedroom walls). We also keep any in-progress project info slipped into the front sleeves of the binder so it’s always on hand (and once it’s completed we file it in a “Completed DIY” folder that we keep in one of our storage ottomans). Hope it helps!

      xoxo,
      Sherry

Hi John and Sherry, I do love the sneak peek of your porch redo but I have another burning question…Do you guys have any sort of system for keeping up with all of the projects you have done? I want to keep all my redo info organized like paint colors that I’ve used or ideas that I have for future projects. Any ideas or tips? Thanks!! I love your blog!!!

Also, do you have any advice on where to find home decor, and especially furniture, for a reasonable price??

Your website has given me the decorating/DIY itch – unfortunately my bank account isn’t thrilled with this ;)

My husband and I are especially looking for a bed at a steal of a price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love every thing ya’ll do!

      Hey Rachel,

Ikea, Target, JC Penney, Overstock, Urban Outfitters, World Market, and ZGallerie are a few of our favorite furniture/home decor resources. You’ll probably have especially good luck with Ikea or Target when it comes to a bed (our bed is actually the Malm bed from Ikea in black-brown and we love it!). Happy shopping…

I’ve been looking forward to the big reveal tomorrow all week; I guess I can wait one more day! I love the flower pots at Home Depot. I have the blue and brown versions of your green one.

It’s hard to tell exactly, without a closer view of the flower itself, but I think your yellow flowering plant might be a snapdragon. If you gently pinch the back of the petals does the front pop open like an opera singer? Snaps were my favorite flower as a kid.

Also, you could totally make an awesome toad house for your new friend! There are lots of DIY tutorials online.

Hi guys, been lurking for a while since I came across your blog via the HD 48-Hour Challenge through Making It Lovely and it’s now a firm favourite! Have bookmarked a whole rake of posts for all the fantastic organisational improvements I’m going to make at home. Eventually.

Can’t wait for The Big Reveal :)

I think the yellow flowered plant might be a broom?

Yes Lynnie! It’s all coming back to us! The sign by the little yellow flowering plant at Home Depot said “Sweet Broom Jo” not just “Sweet Jo”- maybe Jo is a certain type of sweet broom? Or maybe it’s just his name. Heheh. Either way, little Jo is living it up on the front porch.
