Fab Freebie: Say Grace

Since our eyes are constantly peeled for fun nursery art lately, we’re psyched to bring you this week’s giveaway from Grace Hester Designs. And even if you’re not expecting a little one, you might just spot the perfect piece to commemorate your wedding, your brood, or even your love of foreign languages amongst Grace’s type and silhouette-based art.
We love the idea of our little beanette learning some Spanish numbers or French animal names through these punchy designs (or even picking up a Chinese character or two). And it’s because of Grace’s fun range of prints that we couldn’t bear to narrow down this week’s prize to a specific group of designs – so TWO of you are gonna score a $50 credit toward anything in Grace’s etsy shop.

Grace me… I took Latin in high school but don’t remember much of it at all. “Veni, vidi, vici” does stick out, though, which means “I came, I saw, I conquered.”

I love the phrase UBUNTU which in South Africa means: I am who I am because of who you are.

In high school we had to take atleast 3 years worth of foreign language classes. I chose German, not because I was interested in the language or culture, but because that is what most of my friends signed up for! Duh! :) Little did I know, that I would end up loving the class for much more than the social scene.
My favorite german phrase is: Ich Liebe Dich.. I love you!
Merci! or Bon. I love how bon sounds like it punctuates itself.

I love the French word “chouette” (owl) and the Spanish word “sacapuntas” which sadly only means pencil-sharpener, but sounds much more sinister if you hiss it at someone!

I studied Latin in high school and by far, my favorite word was “sportula” – meaning “small giftbasket.” It always made me smile that a language like Latin, with a dozen different words meaning “to kill,” had a word like sportula.

My favorite latin phrase is “Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.” It is part of a church chant/hymn and means “Where charity and love are, God is there.”

My favorite saying is in German and always gives me a good laugh. I went to Germany with my high school exchange program, one of those trips filled with goofy boys and eye-opening experiences… It seemed like every single bus we saw while we were there had the phrase “Gute Fahrt!” painted on the side. Of course high school boys can always be counted on to pose for pictures with any “dirty” words they find, even though we all knew this phrase, loosely translated, meant nothing more than “Have a great trip!”

My favorite foreign phrase is in Hebrew: l’olam va’ed – directly translated, it means the entire world. But in biblical prayer, forever and ever, to describe G-d. I just love the concept of world and forever being encompassed together

My favorite word in another language is how you say Thank you in sign language! You put your hand to your chin and then move hand down towards your stomach. I am teaching sign language to a child and I love when she does this, its so sweet and genuine!

I speak Spanish, but my current favorite phrase comes from a visit with some friends who had an Italian teenager staying with them. She would greet us in the morning with “Ciao Bella” and it was so beautiful to hear!

Hum, good question. I do speak French fluently, so there is a lot of expression I use in ever day language. I suppose the one I use the most is “Franchement”, which loosely translates to “come on now”. It’s just so nice to sum up one feeling in one word!
