Ornamental Ideas

Remember a while back when we excitedly announced that we were asked to write a regular column in Richmond’s home pub R. Home magazine? Well our very first story has hit the presses and we’re beyond psyched to share our easy holiday decorating ideas using ornaments in fresh and unexpected ways! You can click here to read the actual three page story and check out our pics below for easy instructions and behind the scenes stories.

First we’ll fill you in on the process of being bona fide “contributors.” Well, we were tasked with coming up with three fun little DIY projects per mag, and since our first assignment was the Christmas issue we decided to brainstorm a bevy of unusual ornament-involved ideas. Whee! But there were a few challenges throughout the process like the fact that we had to actually get our hands on holiday ornaments to execute our ideas (it was early September at the time). We also had to style everything ourselves in our own home (where the shoot for each issue takes place). But we figured it out as we went along and of course the end product tickles us to no end. But enough jibber jabber, onto our DIY decorating ideas!

Idea #1: A Seasonal “Place Card” Our first fresh take on the tried and true glass ornament was to write guest’s names on them with a paint pen to create a festive little holiday “place card”. Here’s a shot of our set up that we snagged over the photographer’s shoulder back in September:

One funny little behind the scenes fact is that all the make believe guests had really short names (Ross, Ella, Lisa, Bill, etc) since I wasn’t sure if Nicolette and Margaret would be as easy to pen on the ornaments. But the good news is that it was actually pretty painless, so there’s no need to uninvite your long named in-laws this Christmas (sorry!).

Oh and we also thought these would make cute little DIY prezzies. Just get a bunch of ornaments and write each family member’s name on ‘em and package them up in something cute (a festive box or even a stocking). The giftees can use them for tree hanging, displaying in a bowl or even hanging on the mantel for proper stocking identification.

Idea #2: Ornament Magnets This project involved gluing magnets to ornaments and using them to display holiday cards on your fridge (which sure beats lining them up on some table where gusts of wind and errant dog tails knock ‘em over). When it came to the actual assembly, we tried using craft glue to adhere the magnets but quickly discovered that it took wayyyy too long to dry so we switched over to Liquid Nails and everything went swimmingly from then on.

Behind the scenes story: Needless to say it was hard to get our hands on holiday cards in early September, so we dug into our keepsake box for a cards from years past (see the card on the bottom right with Burger as a reindeer on it?) and also made some using colored paper cut outs and glittery stickers from Michael’s.

Oh and we also thought the ornament magnets could make cute gifts, especially strung together with luxe velvet ribbon or cutely displayed in a glass dish or bowl.

Idea #3: Beverage Dispenser Sparkle Our third idea was to float some gleaming ornaments in a festive little beverage dispenser for a cute seasonal display that’s memorable and oh-so-easy (just pop ‘em in and you’re done). The only tip here would be to use smooth ornaments without any extra flourishes so your guests aren’t drinking sequins, feathers, or glitter. Oh and don’t worry about lead or other toxins leeching into your drink. As long as the ornaments are new there are laws that require them to be safe enough for children to lick and even swallow. Not that that’s a good idea…

And for this idea we actually have two behind the scenes stories. The beverage container that we got from Target was faulty (the nozzle leaked even when it was in the closed position!) so for the entire shoot our punch slowly dripped onto a towel that we placed on the floor out of frame. The second snafu was that we initially pitched the idea of freezing small plastic ornaments in ice cubes for shiny little cocktail bling but we quickly realized that once the ice melted it was actually super dangerous (hello chocking hazard!) so we thought all night about what we could do to remedy the idea (just days before the shoot) and came up with the beverage container switcheroo. Whew!

Again in the vein of creative gifting, we think filling a drink dispenser with your favorite punch and some snazzy ornaments (and maybe even taping the punch recipe to the side of the container) would create a great hostess gift for any holiday party (who wouldn’t love an instant conversation piece that’s useful from the moment it arrives?).

So there you have it, three super easy and affordable ways to inject a little holiday sizzle into your home in no time. You can read a few of our extra ideas on the bottom of the third page here (click on the image to zoom). And we can’t wait to share our next column with you guys (packed with DIY art ideas). Stay tuned…

Perfect timing! I have a holiday party this weekend and I am going to “borrow” your beverage dispenser idea. Fabulous! Keep those creative and festive ideas coming!

The article and ideas are great; the picture of the two of you? Priceless!

I really love the shower-curtain idea. That’s the kind of off-the-wall thing that my 17 year old really loves!

I love the ornament magnet idea. What a great way to bring decorations into the kitchen. I just might have to make a few!

Wow! You two are like the eveready bunnies…your amazing ideas just DON’T STOP!! I love all of your unique ideas…and what a great shoot!

I especially love putting names on ornaments with paint pens. That’s so great. I’m a huge fan of semi-homemade ornaments. They’re so special!

Not only do you have great, and inspiring, ideas – the way you write about them makes for fun reading!

Thank you so much for giving me the perfect gift for my piano students! I’m going to combine two of your ideas and write their names on ornament magnets. Inexpensive yet personal!

You used my name! Thankfully I have a number of shortened versions for moments like this. Very cute ideas (as always). I was worried about the lead paint too. Colored glass does seem like a good choice. And maybe do a good soaking first just to be on the safe side.

Happy holidays!

I really like the ornament magnets!

We’re so glad you guys are diggin’ our latest column. We’d love to see any and all pictures of the ornament crafts that you take on, so feel free to send them our way! And stay tuned for more DIY projects in every issue of R. Home…

Trying to get an early start on my Christmas ideas- the link to your story above isn’t working, though!

Thanks Katie! All fixed. Just click the link and then click to zoom.

Ok, so I’m late to the YHL party and I’m catching up on last year’s archives this year. I, too, love the magnet idea — can you share where you found the magnets themselves? I’ve got everything else I need (thanks for the Liquid Nails tip!)

Hey Julie,

We actually snagged the magnets at Office Max so any office supply store should have them (along with places like Michael’s or other crafty spots). Hope it helps!

I love the tablesetting idea with the ornaments as place cards! Do you have instructions on how to fold the napkins like that? It’s so pretty !

Hmm, we’re stumped! I folded those napkins myself before shooting that photo but have no idea what I did. The key factor here is that I did it in a second and although I can’t detail the steps just play around with the napkins you have (starting off with a triangle sometimes, a square sometimes, rolling, folding, etc) and see what you get. Hope it helps!

Oh well, thanks anyways! I guess I’ll just do that- play around and see what I come up with. Hopefully I can remember how I did things so I won’t just have one pretty one…

Haha, yeah that would be annoying! We’ll bet you can figure it out though. Good luck!
