Hanging A Capiz Chandelier In The Bedroom

Warning: what you are about to read will probably make you $59.99 poorer but 59.99% giddier.

The gorgeous capiz chandelier that we have in our bedroom generates its fair share of compliments and “where’d you get that?!” remarks.

Masterbedroom

Which is actually no surprise since we discovered it when Domino magazine raved about how fantastic it was (with a fantastic price to match- just $99). But thanks to a recent West Elm sale, our beloved capiz beauty is now available for an almost inconceivable $59.99. Be still my beating heart.

And not only does it come in the luminescent white color that we adore, it’s also offered in this gorgeous sand color that they call “mocha.” Might as well be called “you mocha me crazy” because I’m loopy over this lamp. So here’s the link. Happy shopping!

I am at a stand-still when it comes to lighting for my new house. Nothing I find in stores appeals to me, or gives off enough light!! But this is lovely. I’ll have to pass the link along to my husband to see how he feels about it.
    Thanks!!

Right this morning I was thinking about what light-thing should I get for my bedroom and I thought about trying to find something close to yours… Do you think West Elm delivers overseas?
I guess I’ll have to go hunting around for a similar one…

    Hey Gracia,

Just got off the phone with West Elm and they don’t do international delivery but I have an idea. You should try searching ebay listings for the capiz chandelier and I’m sure there will be lots of people who do ship internationally selling it there for slightly more than the sale price- but still cheaper than any other capiz chandelier out there. My fingers are crossed for you.

Out of curiousity, what does the ceiling look like where the light hangs? I found a cheap target capiz chandelier a while ago but it didn’t have an attractive “plate” that covers up the box. Wondering if the west elm one is better.

I’ve been lusting after this light for awhile, but we have a black ceiling fan/light combo in our bedroom, and we use the fan all the time. We’ve been contemplating doing something like the drum shade on the ceiling fan you posted about a few weeks ago instead.

Thank you so much for your help, Sherry. I couldn’t find theexact one, but I fell in love with this one: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/7/2/1/7/6/0/webimg/133978795_o.jpg
Unfortunately, it’s just too much money for us right now. We’re trying to spend as little as possible, since this is just a rental and we’re saving for our dream house, which should be in the market in about… well, let’s hope it’s soon.
So, I wanted to splurge a little, but I think I’ll stick to some “invisible” (as in so simple that you don’t notice it) lighting for now.
It’s so frustrating getting almost everything from Ikea but it’s for a good cause, right?

Elizabeth- We had the exact dilemma in our house (which came with 6 ceiling fan/light combos!) and John was super reluctant to remove the bedroom combo for obvious cooling reasons. I came up with the idea to get a really cute vintage looking stainless steel fan (with some decent power) that we could seasonally keep on the dresser across from the bed (set to oscillate). It totally keeps us just as cool as the ceiling fan if not cooler. And it was so nice to visually lift our low ceilings by removing the bulky fixture and replacing it with such an airy and ethereal one. It’s perfect for a bedroom! Anyway, no pressure- just wanted to throw the non-ceiling fan idea out there. They also have standing ones in a nickel finish that you can stick in the least visible corner of the room during the warmest part of the year. Good luck with your lighting decision!

Gracia- It’s totally worth the wait. You can totally have fun shopping at Ikea and I’m sure you’ll be in that dream house in no time. Keep us posted on all the exciting house hunting adventures in your future!

Mrs. Limestone- The West Elm light just comes with a long cord to hang it (so you can plug it in and sway it if you want, or hardware it by cutting off the end with the plug). Needless to say we hardwired ours by cutting off the bulk of the long cord and exposing the red and black wires within the cord. Then all we needed was a white plate cover (from Lowe’s for like $3)to hide the junction box in the ceiling where the cord emerges. Since the chandelier hangs pretty flush to the ceiling you can’t even see the cover from most angles. Hope that helps!

    Sherry

This is a totally unrelated question, but I figured it was worth a try: Does anyone know where to find good bar stools that are counter-height and don’t cost several hundred dollars each? I love these from the Sundance catalog, but of course they are prohibitively expensive!

Amy- Ironically enough, the bedding is also from West Elm, but we got it on sale about a year ago. I haven’t seen anything identical lately, but keeping an eye on westelm.com and dwellstudio.com will hopefully turn up something similar. Oh and maybe you could try ebay- someone may even have my exact duvet since they tend to sell older merchandise still in the packaging. Good luck!

Julia- I love Bryn and her blog! So funny that she had eyes for the very same chandelier. Honestly I think a lot of people have discovered it in the last year or so, but the new sale price pushed me over the edge. I keep wondering if they’re just temporarily lowering the price or if they’re no longer going to carry it. I guess we shall see…

    Hi EastEnd,

Sort of – they’re actually two large IKEA wardrobes that we perfectly fit in there. Then we added molding details to fake the built-in look. They were actually meant just to add storage, but they ended up looking pretty nice too. Glad you like the look.

It was actually a big saga to get everything right, but you can read the gist of it in these two posts:

First, love your site!!! Second, I have this in mocha above our bed and LOVE it! It comes with a round brushed silver plate to cover up any wires and has a simple silver cord that hangs through the plate and you can adjust the level of the pendant. The quality is also great… and, World Market has these similar Capiz pendants ( I bought a white one for my Grandma because she loved mine so much) in case anyone wants to see them in person. Happy lighting :)

Just read about the bedroom project. I’m so ready to go tear my bedroom apart now. What a perfect solution for storage! I don’t know what people did back in 1925 when my bungalow was built but it has exactly two closets. So you can imagine how awful my situation is….oh, and I loved the comment about the cheap trading spaces project!
God I miss being able to just run to Ikea.

Oooh… I love this! I was also happy to hear it came with a long cord (although I have a hard time envisioning what that would look like) — we live in an apartment, so it’s safe to say we can’t make any electrical changes. Thanks for the heads up on such a beautiful lighting addition!

I did it! I bought the white one! Some copycat I am… I was torn, but I sent the pic of your room AND the pic of Bryn’s room to my husband and he loved the fixture. AND he thought they were photos from a catalog. :)

    Sherry,
Is the West Elm Capiz Chandelier hard to clean? I’m thinking about getting this one (http://www.westelm.com/products/w425/) for over my rustic farmhouse dining room table – with bench like yours!

      Hey Dani,

Good question! We just run a feather duster over it every once in a while but it’s sooo low maintenance. We have to clean fans and other light fixtures a lot more often (maybe because the capiz moves softly all the time the dust can’t really settle on it very easily).

Do you think that the capiz pendant listed on West Elm now is the same size as yours? What bulb wattage does yours handle?

I’m so sorry I have no idea. We no longer live in that house so I can’t measure it but I’d guess it was around 18″ wide.
