Tour Time

UPDATE: This post isn’t updated with recent tour info, so click here to see our official regularly-updated tour page.

It’s heeeeeere. That fateful day when we finally get to reveal the finalized tour dates for our book, fresh from our publisher’s mouth (er, email).

Book Tour Map TBD

A few things to note are:

1. If it were humanly possible we would parasail/glacier climb/spelunk to every last crevice of the globe to thank each one of you personally for reading our blog. But given all the factors that go into planning and executing one of these things, we’re extremely grateful to be able to slide through all of the places they’ve scheduled us – especially since this was originally going to be a much smaller tour.

2. For anyone who’s bummed that we won’t in their city, we actually have a mac daddy giveaway planned for this coming Monday (why yes it does include flying one lucky winner and a friend to Richmond for the November 8th signing… amongst other awesome things like delicious meals and shopping sprees). Photo courtesy of the Richmond Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tour Giveaway Graphic

3. There’s always the possibility that our tour could be extended again down the line (depending on how things go, more dates could be added). Heck, our Austin stop wasn’t even initially planned but pre-orders at BookPeople were so popular that they invited us out. Thanks people of Austin! So to anyone in a city that isn’t on the tour, you know we’ll keep you posted the second anything changes, which is definitely a possibility (ex: there’s talk of coming to the ATL area in Feb).

4. As for the blog while we’re away, we’re sure it’ll be a bit of a juggling act but we’re dedicated as always to keeping things fun around here. So we’ve squeezed in some extra projects (surprise!) that we’ll be unveiling while we’re touring. We’ve also lined up a pretty darn amazing gaggle of house crashings (check out a few sneak peeks below). Speaking of which… if you have an awesome casa in one of the cities that we’ll be visiting, please email us photos so we can possibly crash your house! And of course there will be window shopping and other travel adventures as well as some ridiculous/dorky video footage of some of our events/stops/flights, etc – you know we like to virtually take you guys with us wherever we go…

House Crash Tease

5. Clara and Burger will travel with us for some parts of the tour and will stay back with the grandparents for other more intense legs. They don’t exactly love planes, unfamiliar rooms, and missing naps/bug-hunting adventures, so we’re trying to shield them from as much of the insanity as possible. Leaving them behind for some parts of the tour will no doubt make us a little sniffly (neither of us have ever spent a night away from Clara, and Burger even came on our honeymoon!) but we’ve gotta do the best thing for them, even if it’s the hard thing for us.

6. We just learned that the folks who are making this tour possible and hosting us at each destination (ex: independent book stores, West Elm, Flor, etc) love when you buy a book at the event for us to sign. So if you’ve pre-ordered one already and would like us to sign it, we’re happy to do that (and so grateful that you did!) but it would be awesome to show some love to the host for getting us out there by purchasing a book at the event for us to sign as well. With the holidays around the corner, maybe you can gift the one you got on pre-order? Or ebay it for $100 (what? our signature is only worth 40 cents?). Or just use it as a decorating prop while you read the other one, like so:

Book Dummy Closed

Fun fact about the shot above: that’s not actually our book. It’s called a “dummy copy” and it’s basically just our cover printed out and wrapped around a completely blank book since ours are still off in Indiana being printed (right here in the USA, baby). We’re supposed to get our first preview next week, which will surely make us squeal like the Chippettes. John included (he fancies himself a Jeannette – I’m totally an Eleanor).

Book Dummy Open

Update #1: Some folks are worried that books won’t be available for us to sign if the tour stops in your city before the book officially comes out on the 6th. The good news is that there will be stacks of books being sold at every single event (both at independent book stores and places like Flor or West Elm). Yay! But I better start practicing my signature since it’s nothing but a messy squiggle that looks different every time… ack.

Update #2: We wish we had more control over what cities we were stopping at! It really is all about who invites us where. So it really has nothing to do with how big a city is, it’s all about if a certain vendor or bookstore works with the dates/times/etc. The great news is that it definitely sounds like the tour might get extended, so stay tuned for those details as soon as they’re finalized!

Any chance that Philly will get added? I know you have a lot of fans here! If you do end up in my neck of the woods, I don’t have an awesome house for you to crash (I have a house and it’s nice but nowhere near as cool as the paces you usually crash) but I’d love to go shopping with you :)

you GUYS! I am so excited! I will be hauling my (at that point) EXTREMELY pregnant self down south from Seattle to Tacoma for that stop. So far I have 3 YHL reading friends along for the ride! (I’m trying to convince one of them to send you an email about a house crash, she and her husband have done some AMAZING work with their house since moving in 2 years ago. Including a GLORIOUS kitchen re-do. I want to steal it.)

I am so excited for ya’ll and scared for ya’ll at the same time. LOL That is a lot of stops! So cool all the places you will get to see! So happy for you.

I’m only an hour and a half away from ATL, so I’m kind of hoping it gets added. BUT we have a baby due in February (Valentine’s Day to be exact). If it’s scheduled and I haven’t popped yet, I’m totally there. Having someone go into labor at your signing would make a good story, right?

I really want to come meet you guys in Toronto (and was so please to see a Canadian city on the list), but I live in Ottawa and since you’re there on a Monday I would need to fly in after work, meet you and then fly back home. I considered it, but spending $300 just to say “hi” and maybe snap a bad self-portrait doesn’t seem very YHL’ish does it? I should probably spend the cash on stuff for the house and live vicariously through my TO friends who will be there to meet you! :-)

I’m sure you answered this somewhere in the comments already…for the stops that require RSVP (for me, that would be Chicago) how does that work? You just RSVP on the facebook page and your name gets added to a list?? Does it cost anything to go (since its more of a “meet and greet” with refreshments and all that…)? I’m about 2-3 hours from Chicago and have cousins who live right downtown so I’m really considering driving over (from MI) for the book signing!! I may have to persuade my mom to come with me since I’ve got 2 little ones to look after too :) So excited for you guys! Sometimes when someone’s paying to fly us out in an area, it makes sense to bundle other stops while we’re out there – and sometimes three locations might split the cost to get us out there. Hope that makes sense!

Ahhhh so exciting!! And sad at the same time…I live in South Dakota and could easily drive to Minneapolis, but OF COURSE I bought spendy tickets to see Stomp the same night. SO. BUMMED. A trip to Chicago is a bit out of my price range at the moment, so now I’m wondering…what would it take to get a store to host out here in Sioux Falls? Would I be able to approach a shop with a request to host? How does that work (and how much cashmoneh would it potentially cost the store)? Thanks!!

I’ve been a consistent reader of your blog since early in 2009. I have continued reading not just because your style and projects inspire me (they do!), but also (mostly) for your genuine honesty and your open enthusiasm for life.

We love when you share “real” things like failing that inspection on the deck, John! Sure, it was a bummer, but it happens to the best of us DIYer’s. Sherry, you’re so relatable, friendly, and just plain adorable! I am so sorry you lost your aunt recently. Your tribute to her was beautiful and reminds us all to enjoy our loved ones a little more while they’re still here. On the opposite end of the spectrum–your version of “giddy” makes me smile! I am the same way, so happy with simple pleasures and cheap finds! That’s the key to life, happiness, and never growing up: savoring all the small stuff.

You’re not stopping anywhere close to my home, but I’ve pre-ordered two of your books (one for me and for a friend), and I look forward to having a visible reminder of you in my home. Oh, and I’ve redone a couple of homes so far…working on the third (slower now). I just wanted to send this comment out (please feel free not to publish it as it’s just intended for YOU!) to say congratulations on your success. I am so happy for you and your family! And I know this didn’t happen for you without a lot of HARD work behind the scenes–not all of it to do with fun, home projects.

We (husband and I) have our own business and it has been an adventure while raising our only daughter, but it has also been great because I could carve out time for my daughter too. I’m glad to see your family enjoying a similar path; it’s not the easiest life, but it’s such an accomplishment to build a business and a family DIY style!

I wish you all the best now and in your future. Have fun on your book tour! Bask in the love!

So no love for the Deep South! I was so looking for an excuse for a road trip, but no dice. Oh well, if you fancy a layover in Dothan, Alabama, you guys are welcome to house crash us! So happy for you guys and can’t wait to hear every exciting detail along the way.

Can I stowaway in your suitcase for this book tour? OK, thanks.

Now I just need to decide if I want to stalk, er I mean, see you guys in Cincinnati or Chicago. Wait. I just remembered that the husband’s cousin is getting married on Oct. 20th. I’m sure his family and cousin will understand why I can’t make it to the wedding. Because, if faced with the choice, I’d definitely choose you guys. Looks like I’ll be seein’ ya in Chicago!

YAH! Cincinnati! I’m close by so I’m gonna try to come see ya and get the J&S signatures! Huge congrats on the book, you guys. I’m sure you put your hearts (and sweat) into it just like your blog. Your tour sounds exhausting, but I hope you guys find ways to make it fun!! Enjoy the ride.

Your book gets released November 5th, right? Does that mean I won’t receive the book in time for the NYC book tour on November 1st?!

So pumped for your stop in Dallas. West Elm is literally down the street from our house (unfortunately probably not up to par for a house crashing though)!

I can’t believe you guys will be coming to the Tacoma Dome! It’s so goofy looking. Plus, I live like a mile away from it, so I am DEFINITELY coming! If our house were looking more finished and fancy like the rest of the House Crashers tours you do, I would totally invite you.
