Tour Time

UPDATE: This post isn’t updated with recent tour info, so click here to see our official regularly-updated tour page.

It’s heeeeeere. That fateful day when we finally get to reveal the finalized tour dates for our book, fresh from our publisher’s mouth (er, email).

Book Tour Map TBD

A few things to note are:

1. If it were humanly possible we would parasail/glacier climb/spelunk to every last crevice of the globe to thank each one of you personally for reading our blog. But given all the factors that go into planning and executing one of these things, we’re extremely grateful to be able to slide through all of the places they’ve scheduled us – especially since this was originally going to be a much smaller tour.

2. For anyone who’s bummed that we won’t in their city, we actually have a mac daddy giveaway planned for this coming Monday (why yes it does include flying one lucky winner and a friend to Richmond for the November 8th signing… amongst other awesome things like delicious meals and shopping sprees). Photo courtesy of the Richmond Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tour Giveaway Graphic

3. There’s always the possibility that our tour could be extended again down the line (depending on how things go, more dates could be added). Heck, our Austin stop wasn’t even initially planned but pre-orders at BookPeople were so popular that they invited us out. Thanks people of Austin! So to anyone in a city that isn’t on the tour, you know we’ll keep you posted the second anything changes, which is definitely a possibility (ex: there’s talk of coming to the ATL area in Feb).

4. As for the blog while we’re away, we’re sure it’ll be a bit of a juggling act but we’re dedicated as always to keeping things fun around here. So we’ve squeezed in some extra projects (surprise!) that we’ll be unveiling while we’re touring. We’ve also lined up a pretty darn amazing gaggle of house crashings (check out a few sneak peeks below). Speaking of which… if you have an awesome casa in one of the cities that we’ll be visiting, please email us photos so we can possibly crash your house! And of course there will be window shopping and other travel adventures as well as some ridiculous/dorky video footage of some of our events/stops/flights, etc – you know we like to virtually take you guys with us wherever we go…

House Crash Tease

5. Clara and Burger will travel with us for some parts of the tour and will stay back with the grandparents for other more intense legs. They don’t exactly love planes, unfamiliar rooms, and missing naps/bug-hunting adventures, so we’re trying to shield them from as much of the insanity as possible. Leaving them behind for some parts of the tour will no doubt make us a little sniffly (neither of us have ever spent a night away from Clara, and Burger even came on our honeymoon!) but we’ve gotta do the best thing for them, even if it’s the hard thing for us.

6. We just learned that the folks who are making this tour possible and hosting us at each destination (ex: independent book stores, West Elm, Flor, etc) love when you buy a book at the event for us to sign. So if you’ve pre-ordered one already and would like us to sign it, we’re happy to do that (and so grateful that you did!) but it would be awesome to show some love to the host for getting us out there by purchasing a book at the event for us to sign as well. With the holidays around the corner, maybe you can gift the one you got on pre-order? Or ebay it for $100 (what? our signature is only worth 40 cents?). Or just use it as a decorating prop while you read the other one, like so:

Book Dummy Closed

Fun fact about the shot above: that’s not actually our book. It’s called a “dummy copy” and it’s basically just our cover printed out and wrapped around a completely blank book since ours are still off in Indiana being printed (right here in the USA, baby). We’re supposed to get our first preview next week, which will surely make us squeal like the Chippettes. John included (he fancies himself a Jeannette – I’m totally an Eleanor).

Book Dummy Open

Update #1: Some folks are worried that books won’t be available for us to sign if the tour stops in your city before the book officially comes out on the 6th. The good news is that there will be stacks of books being sold at every single event (both at independent book stores and places like Flor or West Elm). Yay! But I better start practicing my signature since it’s nothing but a messy squiggle that looks different every time… ack.

Update #2: We wish we had more control over what cities we were stopping at! It really is all about who invites us where. So it really has nothing to do with how big a city is, it’s all about if a certain vendor or bookstore works with the dates/times/etc. The great news is that it definitely sounds like the tour might get extended, so stay tuned for those details as soon as they’re finalized!

In Austin you need to eat at Torchy’s Tacos, Home Slice, and/or Amy’s Ice Cream, and if you have the bean with you then stopping in to Toy Joy is a must! (Torchy’s can also be found in Houston and Dallas but…)

My husband is trying to persuade me it would be a good idea to go to the Bears game while we’re in town. So excited Chicago is on a weekend and I can’t wait to meet you both!!

Everyone is talking about a road trip to Minneapolis or Austin or wherever – I’m thinking “road” (well, plane) trip to the Grand Caymans!! Wonder if my hubby would agree??
Either way – I may have to find a way to get to Chicago or Minneapolis. And good for you guys having some time alone on part of this tour even if it’ll be tough leaving behind the little ones. It’s a tough thing whenever you do it, but I’m a firm believer in the occasional night away from the children being extremely healthy for the marriage. Enjoy the tour!

I saw you were coming to Tacoma and got sooooooo excited!! I’d prefer Seattle, but I’d make the trek to Tacoma.. and then I read further and got real sad.. And I can’t even take NPH’s advice and be awesome instead.. because I’m too sad…. because the event is the middle of the day on a Friday! :( I do contract work and don’t get days off.. I’m soooo bummed that it’s not an evening thing!!!!!!!!!!
Ok.. enough of my pity party… :) Maybe all us Seattleites can do something to get you to back for an event up here. It’d be a shame to come all this way and not even get to see Seattle!

I think my husband might be just as happy…so prepare to meet a healthy portion of that 6% Canadian demographic…and even the 2% male demographic…wait if my husband is Canadian and male that’s even more of a minority right?! We are so excited and decided to make it our night our for our anniversary in November (real date is the 19th). We will have a daughter Amelia with us who will be a few days shy of 6 mos old. Her and Clara were almost birthday buddies..born May 15th. Our book is on pre-order but rest assure that I’m sure we will buy another and probably something from West Elm (hard to resist). I would drive to Dallas for it but that’s that’s my sister-in-laws baby shower date. So excited for your book, and actually the closest city to me is Washington DC and the date is my birthday which I usually take off so maybe I will come win that rug I’m excited to see!

As far as the travel away from your child (from someone who had to spend the last 3 out of 6 weeks travelling away from a 14 month old, 2 of them internationally) it is HARD. The key is to figure out the best times in the day for both your schedule and the home schedule to call and check in (at least twice in the day, 3 if you can) and plan for time zone differences since that is the killer. I try to call and stay on speaker phone for 30 minutes during dinner if I can so it’s like I’m there. My husband and I are in the dark ages and don’t have iPads so we can’t do facetime, but a couple of my coworkers with kids swear by it. A well trained set of Grandparents is paramount (with emphasis on the well trained since they need to know your schedule, where everything is and how it is normally done). And then for your sanity, make sure you have enough photos and videos on your cell phone for when you miss her too much and need a little dose of Clara to keep you going. Good luck with it!

(Oh – and when you get a chance – will you guys tell us how you traveled with Burger on your honeymoon? We are thinking about planing with our long-haired Burger twin to Europe, but are scared about the plane sitch. We won’t cargo him – so it’ll have to be under the seat. yay DC! This is great – I can come and see you on purpose at your book signing instead of thinking “dangit – why didn’t I go antiquing in Alexandria this weekend and awkwardly bump into Sherry and John” after you all post about your trips up to the area. It’s easy to get to as well – my office isn’t too far away from the FLOR store – you’d be welcome to crash that gorgeous LEED Platinum space, but not my house: still trying to figure out how to place the furniture 4+ months after moving in = ug-ly.

I also second the comment about visiting The Brown Elephant. My husband (a stay-at-home-dad with a part-time job) loves thrifting there on outings with our son. Our place is a collection of new, thrifted and hand-me-down items as well as some DIY’d projects. Good luck on the tour and it would be ah-may-zing to meet you guys in person!

We’re not sure about details for each individual event. Maybe try emailing or calling that host to see what the timeline is? Hope it helps!

Silly question: how can I order your book if I live in Finland?
Congratulation for the tour, I am sure it will be great. I am already waiting the posts about it! :)

Hmm, I think your version of amazon should have it. And a place called the book depository has it too. Hope it helps!

Is it sad that I am deeply considering coming from Vancouver Island (Canada) to see you in Washington? Only a 2 hour ferry ride and a drive across the border…. You guys are amazing! Now to convince the hubby…

Very excited about your book tour, but it sort of stinks that people in your own hometown have to purchase tickets to R Home in order to get a book signed. That puts me off, to be honest, as much as I’d love to meet you guys. I’m happily willing to buy a book or two, but then to be forced to buy tickets to an event I wouldn’t otherwise attend if I want to get it signed? Yuck. I understand that it has a lot to do with where you are asked to do signings, but surely there had to be other options here in Richmond. I know this is probably not your intention at all, but the whole thing seems to smack of ingratitude towards the people and city you call home. There are a lot of us who have very tight budgets, and the book alone will be an indulgence – not everyone can afford to buy tickets to R Home, plus play for a babysitter for the kids, just to get it signed. Doesn’t seem right. Sorry. Still love you guys!

Oh yes, there’s going to be a free signing in Richmond later- it’s still TBD! Stay tuned for that. It’s hard to work around December (no one wants to host anything since they’re so busy for the holidays). As for the R Home event, we have paid and gone the last four years, so it’s really fun (great food, speakers, and fun) but it’s definitely not required! They asked us to be one of their speakers and we’re so honored, but we definitely understand that folks shouldn’t have to pay to see us, which is why we’re working hard to get a second person to host a free event – we’ll be back with those details as they’re finalized as we mentioned :)

I would try to call or email to find out. Each event is different so the folks running it know more than we do! Haha. And smooches to your drooly man! Ha!
